TOG Turns 17: Birthday Open Social, Pizza, Cake, and a Bit of Craic
TOG is turning **17**, and weâre marking it the best way we know how: by rolling our regular **Open Social Night** into a proper **birthday session** with **pizza, cake, and plenty of chatting, tinkering, and general messing**.
If youâve been meaning to drop in for ages, this is a lovely one to start with. If youâre a regular, you already know the vibe: good people, interesting projects on benches, and the sort of conversations that start with âwhatâs that board?â and end up with someone soldering at 1am.
### When and where
* **Date:** **Saturday 24th January**
* **Time:** **7:00pm until late**
* **Location:** **TOG Hackerspace**
The space stays open until the last member calls it a night, which often means we drift happily into the small hours of Sunday morning. Pop in for 10 minutes or stay for the whole stretch, youâre very welcome.
### What to expect
* **Homemade pizza** from the TOG pizza oven, rolling out through the evening
* **Birthday cake** (because weâre not animals)
* **A relaxed open evening**: tours, chats, and a look at whatever weird and wonderful builds are on the go
* **Community craic**: talk, tunes, and the usual âoh go on, Iâll show you how that worksâ energy
Our Open Social Nights are an easy, no-pressure way to see the space and meet the people. Thereâs no agenda and no expectation that youâre âgood atâ anything. Curiosity is the only requirement.
### Make a full day of it: Finish-a-thon earlier that day
This birthday party is happening the **same day as our Finish-a-thon**, running **11:00am to 7:00pm**. So if youâve got a project half-done, a box of parts staring at you, or a nagging âI really should finish thatâ, you can spend the day getting it wrapped up, then roll straight into the birthday celebrations at 7pm.
Have a look here for the Finish-a-thon details:
[https://www.tog.ie/2026/01/a-day-to-finish-what-you-started-finish-a-thon-2/](https://www.tog.ie/2026/01/a-day-to-finish-what-you-started-finish-a-thon-2/)
### What to bring
Weâll have food covered between pizza and cake, but feel free to bring along:
* A drink (or your beverage of choice)
* Snacks to share
* A project to show off, or something you want advice on
* A friend whoâs curious about makerspaces
Weâve also got **plenty of free parking**, so itâs handy to swing by with gear, gadgets, or something for show-and-tell.
### Come celebrate 17 years of TOG
Seventeen years of TOG is a bit mad, in the best way. What started as a small group of people who wanted a place to build and learn has grown into a proper community workshop full of skills, tools, and good humour.
So come in, grab a slice of pizza, have a wander, meet the crew, and help us celebrate.
**See you Saturday 24th January from 7pm.**
A Day to Finish What You Started â Finish-a-thon
At TOG, we love hacking, tinkering, and making things⌠but weâre also very good at accumulating half-finished projects. You know the ones: the ânearly workingâ circuit, the âjust needs a weekendâ code refactor, the 3D print that needs sanding, the costume that needs one final stitch, the repair you definitely meant to do months ago.
So weâre doing something about it.
Weâre hosting a Finish-a-thon, a one-day, community-powered mini hackathon dedicated to making real progress on the projects that have been sitting in a box, on a shelf, or in a Git branch called `final_final_v3`.
Whether itâs coding, crafting, designing, writing, fixing, soldering, sewing, or sorting, this is your day to get it done (or at least get it properly moving again).
### Event Details
* **Date:** Saturday 24th of January
* **Time:** **11:00 AM to 7:00 PM**
* **Location:** TOG Hackerspace, Unit 1B Motor City, Kylemore Road, Dublin 12, D12 CF6V
### And afterwards
After the Finish-a-thon weâll roll straight into our monthly social night, but this one will be a bit special, because itâs also TOGâs birthday. đ
So: progress during the day, then a proper catch-up in the evening with the gang.

### Whatâs the plan?
Nothing too formal. The whole point is momentum and community:
* **11:00 AM:** Arrive, grab a bench, tea/coffee, and settle in
* Share what youâre working on (or keep it quiet and just crack on, no pressure)
* Work through the day, ask questions, borrow a hand, offer a hand
* No prizes, just the satisfaction of progress, plus the usual TOG encouragement and problem-solving
### What can you work on?
Anything goes. If itâs a thing you started and you want to push it forward, it belongs here:
* Squash that annoying bug in your project or open-source code
* Finish an electronics kit gathering dust
* Finally wire up the enclosure, label the panel, tidy the loom
* Repair something thatâs been sitting in the âI must fix thatâ pile
* Wrap up a design, write-up, or documentation youâve been meaning to publish
* Revive a project you love but stalled on
No project? Also grand. Thereâs always someone whoâd love a second pair of hands.

### What should you bring?
* Whatever parts, tools, and materials your project needs
* A laptop is usually a good shout
* TOG has plenty of tools and bits, but assume youâll take home what you bring (and any half-finished bits you create)
### No tickets this time
There are no tickets or registration for this event, just show up and join in.
If youâve any questions (or youâre not sure if your project idea fits), give us a shout and weâll point you in the right direction.
See you Saturday. Letâs finish some things. đ§â¨

I created this Meetup group because I want to see more human connection happen in the real world. I feel many of us want this, but don't exactly know how to go about it. I hope this helps a little bit.
I also work as a transformational coach: I help people who feel stuck in their life to reconnect with themselves, create real change and ultimately live more fulfilling lives.

Letâs play... Mothership / Eldritch Defenders
Join us every Sunday and tell a story as a group by playing a beginner-friendly roleplaying game. Every week we have 2-3 different games. All materials provided and rules are explained at the start of each game, you just need to bring your imagination.
đ **This week's facilitators:**
* đ **Wojtek** continues our unofficial *Mothership* month with *Another Bug Hunt*. The colonists on Samsa-VI have lost contact with the Company. But they've gained contact with something else. The players' crew must re-establish communications with a remote terraforming colony. However, when they arrive they find an abandoned colony and the remains of a bloody assault...
* đ§ââď¸ **Emil** bringing court into session with *Eldritch Defenders*, in which you'll play public attorneys defending supernatural beings from legal jeopardy. The Eldritch Defenders law firm takes on the unnavigable cases and bureaucracies of infernal realms, faerie oaths and the machinations of the darkness. Also the more mundane things, such as what happens when a ghost owes a debt that doesn't technically terminate when they did.

Tutorial 7 - Nearest Neighbors with scikit-learn
My name is Aurelie and I'm graduating with an MSc in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Limerick.
I run monthly **machine learning** and **deep learning** tutorials in Dublin with a small group of people.
\*\*In this tutorial, we will build a **K-Nearest Neighbors** model to classify data into groups (neighbours) using the built-in algorithm from **Scikit-learn**. Together, we will walk through the full pipeline from data preprocessing to model training and evaluation. You will receive a jupyter notebook with reusable code showing all of these steps. No set up required, just a laptop and a google email address :)
**The tutorials are limited to 15 participants and you can reserve your spot either here or by emailing aureliem219@gmail.com. Please make sure to book as soon as possible, as the registration count on Meetup does not guarantee availability.**
**For more information about the tutorials:**
* The tutorials are interactive and will be conducted using **Jupyter notebooks** on **Google Colaboratory** (a free, cloud-based platform that lets us write and run code directly in the browser). While **Google Colaboratory** is free to use, tasks that require more computational power (such as training deep learning models) may benefit from GPU access. In that case, Google offers a once-off payment for around âŹ10 which can last several months depending on your usage.
Some familiarity with **Python** or other programming languages is helpful but not required. Everyone is welcome to join and learn at their own pace.
* The tutorial lasts for 1.5 hours.
* During the tutorial, I share the Jupyter notebook with participants so they can keep it for future reference. We go through the notebook step by step together and I do my best to answer any questions along the way.
* The notebook includes the complete code from data preparation to model training and evaluation. It can be reused or adapted for your own business needs or personal projects
* We will be working with a variety of **Python** libraries including **Scikit-learn**, **PyTorch**, **TensorFlow**, **Keras**, **Seaborn**, **Pandas** and **Matplotlib** and the **Hugging Face** framework. These tools will help us explore different machine learning and deep learning techniques using publicly available datasets.
* Each tutorial focuses on a different algorithm in depth. Topics covered include **linear regression**, **logistic regression**, **K-means clustering**, **decision trees**, **artificial neural networks (ANNs)**, **convolutional neural networks (CNNs)** for image classification, **object detection** and **natural language processing**. The goal is to break down each technique step by step, making it approachable and practical for real-world applications.
The tutorials take place at the **Camdem court hotel in Dublin 2** at **the bar or the restaurant** if the bar is full (coffees need to be ordered at the restaurant). It will run from **3 pm** to **4.30 pm**. **If the bar is busy ,we' ll meet at the restaurant.**
**Camdem court hotel**
**Camden Street Lower, Saint Kevin's, Dublin, D02 W086**
* The tutorials are a high-level practical introduction to machine learning and deep learning and the emphasis on understanding how we process the data , train and evaluate a model with Python. We won't cover the mathematics behind it however some tutorials may have mathematical formulas as part of the algorithm explanation and some tutorials might have more complex data preprocessing as it depends on the datasets and the task we are doing. However the tutorials focus on the practical part!
* *Payments need to be made in advance to secure your place and fees are non-refundable unless I need to cancel the event, in this case refunds will be made.*

**Speakers**
â**âColin Miller** mostly grew up in Austin, Texas, where he developed an early interest in software and maps. After his freshman year of college, he launched his first startup, Redistricter, which took off far faster than expected. He left school and moved to New York to pursue it full-time.
âA year later, he created *Subway Builder*, a hyper-realistic game that lets players design subway systems from scratch while navigating real-world constraints and costs. The game simulates millions of commuters using Census and Redistricter data, powered by the same pathfinding algorithms people rely on to get to work. Your job is to design a route network that gets the most people to their destination as fast as possible.
â
**Greg Feliu** is a data engineer and analyst focused on transportation analytics, with projects ranging from modeling subwayâbus transfers to clustering NYC subway stations by ridership. Drawing on public ridership data and GTFS schedules, he builds minimal-assumption models to estimate ridership on each subway line, combining data modeling with subject-matter expertise to reveal how New Yorkers move through the system with *The Busiest Subway Lines in NYC, Ranked*.
