Two Strong Wings: Advancing the Equality of Women & Men
Two Strong Wings: Advancing the Equality of Women & Men
**\| Two Strong Wings: Advancing the Equality of Women & Men** *** **Can humanity truly reach its full potential without all of its members being free to reach and contribute their all? Is equality a tug of war where one side gains at another’s expense? Does empowering women require taking opportunities away from men, or does it actually strengthen the whole and create more opportunities and a better world for everyone?** **If a bird has one broken wing, it isn’t able to fly or live a full and healthy life. Could this same thinking apply to the balance of men and women? The two wings of a bird do not fight for power, strength or dominance. Both wings need to be of equal strength for the bird to soar. Can humanity truly advance if women do not enjoy the same rights, prerogatives and opportunities as men? How can we work to ensure that we are building communities where everyone has the same opportunities to grow and develop and to contribute to the advancement of humanity together?** **Come join a different kind of conversation – one that welcomes every perspective in a search for the truths that unite us all – as we discuss the spiritual perspective offered by the Bahá’í Teachings on the essential equality of the sexes. Join us for a lively discussion as we explore how achieving that equality is needed for all of humanity to progress and reach its full potential.** **“The world of humanity has two wings – one is women and the other men. Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly. Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible. ” – Bahá’í Teachings** **\*\*\* This event is free and open to all regardless of background or belief. Donations will not be accepted.**

ReelAbilities Film Festival Showing of Sign The Show at NVRC
ReelAbilities Film Festival Showing of Sign The Show at NVRC
ReelAbilities Film Festival Screening: Sign the Show Groundbreaking and truly one of a kind, Sign the Show pulls back the curtain on accessibility in entertainment for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Through humorous, heartfelt, and deeply insightful conversations, the documentary challenges assumptions, sparks laughter, and invites audiences to see access not as an add-on — but as essential. By centering lived experiences and honest dialogue, the film redefines what inclusion can look like on screen, on stage, and beyond. It explores the intersection of Deaf culture, performance, creativity, and equity in a way that is both thought-provoking and empowering. Special Live Talkback Discussion Following the screening, we’ll host a live discussion featuring the film’s director, Cat Brewer, joining us virtually via Zoom. She will be joined by Julie Rems Smario (featured in the film), offering behind-the-scenes insights into the making of the documentary, the creative process, and the larger conversation around accessibility in the arts. Accessibility Provided: ASL interpreters and CART captioning will be provided during the talkback to ensure full communication access for all attendees. Hosted at the Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Persons (NVRC), this event promises not only a compelling film experience but also a meaningful community conversation. Come ready to laugh, reflect, ask questions, and leave thinking differently about access and representation
Herndon Tennis Refugees: 3rd time's a charm! Riverside HS @ 9 AM
Herndon Tennis Refugees: 3rd time's a charm! Riverside HS @ 9 AM
**Hey everyone—we’re moving Saturday’s 9:00 am tennis meetup to Riverside HS. Potomac Falls HS is being used by their teams and the Park View HS site is under construction for at least the next two years, so Riverside HS will likely be our home for the rest of the spring.** **If a few of you can arrive by 8:45 am to help us snag some courts, we’d really appreciate it. See you there!** Join us for our weekly Herndon Tennis Refugees meetup! We’re a drama-free doubles crew for experienced, competitive players (USTA high 3.0–4.0). Come rally, connect, and have fun. No line-call drama or cutthroat battles. Fair play is the baseline. When the old Meetup vanished like a botched overhead, we were stranded like tennis orphans. So we made something better: scrappier, smarter, and shockingly organized. We turned chaos into kick serves and awkward goodbyes into solid backhands. If you’re returning—welcome home. If you’re new—nice upgrade. **The rundown:** * We start with 2 courts (8 players). * If full, **join the Waitlist**—at 12 RSVPs, we add a 3rd court; at 16, a 4th. * Rotating doubles. Friendly, flexible, and fun. * Events open Sundays at 9am and fill fast. * Frequent late cancellations (within 36 hrs) are discouraged. We may ask you to find a sub or limit your future participation. The old group left us at the baseline. Now? We’re charging the net. 🎾

Peace: More than to Just End War?
Peace: More than to Just End War?
Today's Meaningful Conversation explores what is required to achieve true and lasting peace. We will begin our exploration of this topic with a selection of passages from the Bahá’í Writings, which will help us consider the following questions: * Is there a greater vision of peace we can aspire to – one beyond just an end to war? * What are the spiritual prerequisites to bringing about true peace? * What role can each of us play in transforming our communities to achieve a higher vision of peace? *“The scope of universal peace must be such that all the communities and religions may find their highest wish realized in it.”*

Fairfax Pinochle
Fairfax Pinochle
Some people have expressed interest in playing in Fairfax. Lets set up another game that repeats every 2 weeks at Fairfax Town Center. Look for the group with cards somewhere in the center tables. We play alomost exclusively double deck pinochle. All levels of play are welcome from beginner to expert. We will teach and coach new players.
Monday Pinochle in Manassas
Monday Pinochle in Manassas
After having no live games for about a year, lets try playing again on a Monday night. Some of the regular players have gotten shots and I am pretty sure we can find a secluded table to play some cards. Of course masks are required. Lets try playing again at Crossroads. They serve great food and beer. They are currently only open to 10 pm, so I set the play time on this one as 6:30 to 9:30.
Exploring Ethiopian Culture Through Cuisine at Enatye
Exploring Ethiopian Culture Through Cuisine at Enatye
Food is one of the most meaningful ways to experience culture — and Ethiopian cuisine is rooted in community, tradition, and bold, layered flavors. Join the Global Food & Culture group as we gather at Enatye Ethiopian Restaurant to explore traditional dishes served on injera. If you’re open to sharing, we can create a few shared platters so everyone can sample a variety of dishes — but individual ordering is perfectly fine too. Enatye is a small restaurant and does not make reservations so they recommended the 2-4 pm time frame. We’re initially capping this at 12 guests to keep the experience comfortable and conversational. If interest is strong and the restaurant can accommodate, we may open additional spots. The good news is that they will bill each of us separately! Come hungry. Come curious. And come ready to connect around the table.
ASL Sunday Silent Social at Fairfax's Wegmans
ASL Sunday Silent Social at Fairfax's Wegmans
Whether you're Deaf, HoH, an interpreter, an ASL student, or just want to learn or practice American Sign Language (ASL), we welcome all levels of signers to come join us for an evening of ASL socializing and practice. This event occurs on the first and third Sundays of every month, in the heart of Fairfax County at the Fairfax Wegman's (corner of Route 29 and Monument Drive). We can be found on the upper level, typically near the stairs. We generally start around 7 pm. ASL beginners are welcome, but you should know the ASL alphabet and some basic signs - this is not an ASL class, but the more experienced signers are generally happy to help beginners learn and improve. There is no better way to develop your signing skills than by joining the conversation with other signers. There is a place for everyone to join, learn and practice. Regardless, we are always welcoming so don’t be discouraged to attend; this is very informal and new folks are always welcome. Note, some attendees arrive early and grab some of Wegman’s food for dinner, so you can combine a shopping trip with the ASL practice.
