Heart of Compassion: Meditatie & Reflectie
*Since the event will be in Dutch, this description is too.*

For the final chapter of this yearâs *Real Estate* series, weâll travel east to the beautiful countryside near Doetinchem to explore one of the most fascinating estates in the Netherlands: **Kasteel Slangenburg**.
đ Sunday 14 June â 13:00
đ Meeting point: Kasteel Slangenburg bus stop, Doetinchem
Hidden among forests, historic lanes and old hunting grounds, Kasteel Slangenburg is a 17th-century castle built on medieval foundations, surrounded by a landscape shaped over centuries by noble families, nature and architecture.
During our walk, weâll explore the estateâs remarkable trapezium-shaped avenue system, cross the atmospheric âsterrenbosâ (star forest), walk along parts of the Pieterpad and discover hidden corners such as the historic horse washing area and the family cemetery.
This is one of those places where history, landscape design and nature blend together perfectly â and where the Dutch countryside suddenly feels almost cinematic.
And of course, as always, weâll also talk about the stories behind the estate: the castle owners, the transformations of the land over the centuries, and the role these country estates played in Dutch history.
The walk is approximately **4.2 km**, mostly through the estate grounds and surrounding forested landscape. With a bit of luck, we may even spot some local wildlife along the way đ
â ď¸ Important logistical note: reaching Kasteel Slangenburg by public transport usually requires booking the **RRReis Haltetaxi**, an on-demand shuttle service that connects from Doetinchem station (or other nearby points depending on where you come from).
The taxi must be booked **at least 2 hours in advance** of your intended departure time, so please plan your journey carefully!
After the walk, weâll stop at the estateâs former coach house â today transformed into the charming **Koetshuis Slangenburg cafĂŠ** â where we can relax together with a drink and a chat before heading home.
As always, everyone is welcome đ

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: The World of Norse Gods
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **âThe World of Norse Gods,â** with Lilla KopĂĄr a professor of medieval literature and culture at Catholic University who teaches courses on Norse mythology.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-norse-gods](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-norse-gods) .]
Norse gods and heroes have seemed to be pop up everywhere in recent years. The hit film *The Northman*, Marvel movies, Netflix series, video games, and Neil Gaimanâs critically acclaimed books all have featured them wielding their spears, hammers, or swords.
But where did these stories and characters originally come from? And how have they changed over time? Prepare to hear such questions tackled while gaining a big-picture understanding of Norse mythology and how it shaped Norse culture.
Providing you such introductions will be Dr. Lilla KopĂĄr, a scholar of Vikings, Norse Mythology, and Runology and the author of *Gods and Settlers: The Iconography of Norse Mythology in Anglo-Scandinavian Sculpture.*
Dr. KopĂĄr will explore the cultural origins of the Norse gods. Sheâll look at the fascinatingâbut often complex and contradictoryâmyths about them and discuss some their greatest adventures, including the epic story of RagnarĂśk. Sheâll map out the structure of the Norse universe and its nine realms. Sheâll help us get to know the many inhabitants of this world, including giants, dwarfs, elves, Valkyries, and frightening mythical beasts like the Midgard Serpent and Fenrir the wolf.
Weâll survey the medieval literary sources of mythological stories such as the Poetic Edda, Snorriâs Prose Edda, Icelandic sagas, and Viking-age poetry, and weâll compare them to images of gods in art on rune stones, amulets, and other artifacts. Weâll also look at the religious practices, cults, and rituals of Scandinavia in the Viking period based on textual and archeological evidence such as cult objects and traces of elaborate burials.
Itâs your big chance to sit in a bar and get to know Odin, Loki, Freyr and Freyja, Balder and Heimdall, and Thor. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Bluebeard's Bride: Witchy Tabletop RPG
Join Storyteller TaraTheBard on a magical storytelling adventure in Bluebeard's Bride, a femme horror tabletop role-playing game published by Magpie Games. In this story-focused game, each participant takes on one aspect (sister) of Bluebeard's Bride from the famous legend: witch, animus, virgin, mother, or fatale. Together you'll navigate Bluebeard's house and the horrors within, at last coming upon a forbidden room. The setting for this story is the year 1776 in Virginia, United States, as the colony experiences its revolution.
Unlike the published editions of the game, this session focuses on the topic of empowerment through witchcraft. Because of this, in this session, one participant must occupy the role of witch.
This game is friendly for gamers of all experience levels! Safety mechanisms, off-limits topics, character creation, and rules will happen at the start of the session. Please feel free to bring comfort items such as fidget spinners, blankets, or tea. As this is a story tabletop adventure and not a larp, costumes are not required -- however, they are always welcome!
Pens, character sheets, and dice, and all game materials are provided. No preparation is required. 18+ only. All genders welcome! Subject matter will not include depictions of SA or slavery, but will explore serious, gender-based subject matter.
Because this event is strictly limited to 5 participants, you must register here on Meetup to play. Please be sure to update your registration as soon as possible should you be unable to attend, as there has been a lot of interest in this event. You're welcome to download the core book materials from the publisher for free: https://magpiegames.com/products/play-materials-corebookbbb?_pos=5&_sid=ee39e96dd&_ss=r
