**Host's Philosophy on this event:**
The purpose of this meetup is to create a fun and supportive environment where we can improve our skills, enjoy competitive games, and connect socially. While we do aim to play seriously and challenge ourselves, the focus is more on growth and enjoyment than simply winning at all costs. That’s why the title doesn’t include “competitive” or “social”—we want a healthy mix of both. This is a space where you won’t be judged for making mistakes, but we do expect a mindset geared toward learning and getting better over time. That said, this group isn’t intended for total beginners; a basic understanding of the game is expected so that everyone can contribute to meaningful and engaging matches. The host holds the right to remove you from the game if they believe that you are at a C level.

St. Patrick's Day Parade from Jones Point Park
Alexandria is hosting its annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 7th! Let's take a walk around Old Town, and those inclined can linger longer to watch the parade.
❶ **What we'll do:**
* From the old ship's rudder under Wilson Bridge we'll check out the lighthouse and then head north along the shoreline to Madison Street, with a slight detour to walk through the Wilkes St Tunnel. At Madison St we'll turn left, walk west to N. Fairfax St, and head south back to the Torpedo Factory along Fairfax, Princess, and Union streets. After a pit stop at the Torpedo Factory, we'll head west to the parade route along Union and Queen streets. Pick your favorite viewing spot along N Pitt St; the reviewing stand is at the intersection of N Pitt and King streets and the parade starts at 12:15 pm. After the parade or whenever you have had enough, it's about a one mile walk back to Jones Point Park along King and Lee streets.
* The hike is just under 5 miles and should take about 2 hours, plus maybe an hour to watch the parade, at your discretion. The surface is fairly level, except for Windmill Hill, and is mostly paved. This is an easy walk.
* Google map of the hike and parade route: [https://tinyurl.com/we2jus8z](https://tinyurl.com/we2jus8z)
❷ **How to get there:** The park entrance is at the south end of South Royal Street in Old Town Alexandria. From Highway 1 (either direction), take Franklin Street east to Royal Street, turn right and drive south 3 blocks until the street ends in front of Wilson Bridge. The park entrance is on your left. The street address is 1 Jones Point Drive, Alexandria, VA 22314.
❸ **Weather:** The forecast is partly cloudy and a high of 69F, with an 18% chance of showers as we start, falling to around 3% at parade start. Light S winds. Updates here: [https://tinyurl.com/yc4vjjnm](https://tinyurl.com/yc4vjjnm)
❹ **What to bring:** Water, comfy shoes, and your furry friend if desired. If you bring an umbrella or poncho it won't rain.
❺ **Advisory:** As a reminder, this is an adult group, and you are ultimately responsible for your own safety and well-being during events. No one under 18 years of age is allowed at this event, either as members or as guests, to include babies in carriers and/or strollers.
❻ **Administrative stuff:**
* There are restrooms at Jones Point Park, the Torpedo Factory, and Ramsay Visitor Center.
* Parking at Jones Point Park is free and there is room for around 100 cars. ***DO NOT park along S Royal St at the entrance to the park! You may be towed!!***

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Ireland's Fight for Freedom
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Ireland’s Fight for Freedom,”** with Kevin Matthews, assistant professor of history at George Mason University and former London correspondent for Vatican Radio reporting on British and Irish news.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/northern-virginia-ireland-freedom](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/northern-virginia-ireland-freedom) .]
After centuries of struggle, Irish men and women won their freedom from Great Britain after waging a war that set the pattern for all other independence struggles of the 20th century. But there was a price—the partition of their country, a split setting the stage for the Northern Ireland “Troubles” that didn’t end until 1998.
Gain a deeper understanding of Ireland and its history with Professor Kevin Matthews, a historian and frequent Smithsonian Associates speaker who had served as a journalist covering the last stages of the Troubles in Ireland in the early and mid 1990s.
He’ll discuss in depth how the Irish won independence in a two-year war between 1919 and 1921, covering topics as the role women played in the conflict, the life and tactics of the revolutionary leader Michael Collins, and the Irish development of “urban guerilla warfare” using small, highly mobile armed units called “flying columns.”
Most important, this talk will examine how the conflict between Irish nationalists and Irish unionists led to Ireland’s division and later conflict. From the Easter Rising to the Good Friday Agreement, from Bloody Sunday to Brexit, this conflict has never quite gone away.
As the Irish poet, William Butler Yeats once wrote:
Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.
Professor Matthews will explore how the Irish fought to a standstill what was then the mightiest empire in the world and how, more than he could have known, Yeats’ prediction still rings true today. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)
