In ancient China, both Guqin and calligraphy(Shufa) were essential skills for the upper elites. They would often gather, listen to Guqin music, practice calligraphy, and enjoy refined conversations together — a classic way of socializing among cultured friends. Therefore, it’s easy to understand why, during French President Macron’s visit to China in 2023, President Xi hosted him with a live performance of the famous Guqin piece “High Mountain Flowing Water”. If you’re not very familiar with the Guqin yet, you may come and visit a completely free Guqin exhibition from May 29 to June 29 in a beautiful nearly 100-year-old villa right in downtown Shanghai.
