From Open Data to Data Mesh
From Open Data to Data Mesh
Hello PyData People! We are excited to announce our next event of 2026! This time, we will be hosted at Generali Italia’s Torre Generali in Milan for an evening dedicated to open data, data platform orchestration, and scalable data engineering. 📅 When: Thursday, May 19th, 2026 – 18:30–21:00 📍 Where: Torre Generali Italia, Milan ⚠️ Important: Spots are limited. Please keep your RSVP updated to allow others to participate if you can no longer attend. *** **🕒 Agenda** 18:30 – Doors open & check-in 19:00 – Talk 1: Democratizing Data: A deep dive into Eurostat Open Database – Simona Mazzarino 19:45 – Talk 2: Scaling Data Mesh Orchestration with Dagster: Platform-Driven DAGs without Platform Friction – Marco Santoni and Andrea Romeo 20:30 – Networking & Social Dinner *** **🎤 The Talks** **1️⃣ Democratizing Data: A deep dive into Eurostat Open Database** Speaker: Simona Mazzarino (Data Scientist @ Clearbox AI) In this talk, we explore how to turn open data into actionable insights. You will learn how to navigate Eurostat, the EU’s vast statistical database, and use Python tools to fetch and process data for research, AI, and real-world analysis. We will look at how to discover relevant datasets, work with Eurostat’s interface and APIs, and integrate public statistics into your workflows for visualizations, dashboards, and models. A guiding example will be the analysis of migration flows across European countries, from data discovery to a usable dataset for analytics or machine learning. About the Speaker: Simona Mazzarino is a Data Scientist at Clearbox AI. With a background in linguistics, semiotics, and artificial intelligence, she specializes in language technologies. She is an active volunteer in the Python Torino community, where she helps connect people interested in Python applications, and she also volunteers for PyCon Italia. *** **2️⃣ Scaling Data Mesh Orchestration with Dagster: Platform-Driven DAGs without Platform Friction** Speakers: Andrea Romeo, Platform Engineer @ TeamSystem Data Mesh promises scalability and autonomy, but orchestration often becomes the hidden bottleneck: as data products grow, cross-domain dependencies explode, DAGs become fragile, and upstream teams are forced to react to every new consumer. In this talk, we present a platform-designed orchestration solution built on top of Dagster that enables company-wide orchestration without coupling data products together. Instead of requiring data engineers to manually define DAGs or modify upstream pipelines, each data product simply declares its dependencies on upstream output ports. From these declarations, the platform automatically builds and maintains the global DAG behind the scenes, ensuring that upstream data products remain unaffected by new consumers, orchestration scales as the number of data products grows, and platform standards are enforced without slowing down teams. We’ll walk through: * the orchestration challenges we faced when adopting data mesh at scale * how Dagster was extended and shaped into a platform abstraction, not exposed directly to product teams * the Python-based design patterns used to dynamically generate and evolve DAGs * the resulting developer experience for data engineers building data products This session is a practical, production-tested story of how Python and Dagster can be used to enable scalable orchestration in a real data mesh implementation — without turning the platform team into a bottleneck. About the Speakers: Andrea Romeo is a Platform Engineer at TeamSystem, where he focuses on building and evolving the technical foundation behind data infrastructure. He works closely with development and data teams to design scalable, resilient platforms that support data-driven products and services, with a strong focus on backend, cloud technologies, and developer experience. *** See you there!
**English** Already in the 1980s, when computers were just in their infancy, Krishnamurti asked a question that today resonates with extraordinary urgency: ***"If the machine can do everything a human being can do, what will be left of man?"*** In this second meeting of the group, we will explore the theme of **technology's impact on human beings** through the lens of Krishnamurti's teachings — but also with openness to other voices and perspectives. Krishnamurti was not against technology itself. However, he clearly saw a subtle danger: that the human brain, growing accustomed to speed, efficiency, and delegation to the machine, might become increasingly mechanical, distracted, and dull — incapable of that inner movement which alone can bring about true transformation. **How the Meeting Will Unfold** The meeting is not a lecture: it is an open conversation among people who want to enquire together, without taking any answer for granted. In the spirit of Krishnamurti, this is not about "studying" a thought, but about observing directly — within ourselves — how much technology is already shaping the way we think, feel, and relate to one another. **Some questions** we might explore together: * Are speed and digital fragmentation making our minds more superficial? * Are we delegating to the machine not only work, but also meaning? * Is it possible to use technology without becoming more mechanical ourselves? * Is there an inner space that no machine can touch — and are we nurturing it? No prior experience required. Bring only your presence and the willingness to look without judging and without agenda. **Free entry — limited seats. Please confirm your attendance via Meetup.** See you at Rob De Matt; the venue has a social vocation; purchasing something at the venue is not mandatory but encouraged, as it is hosting our event.

Italian Conversation Club — The Village (Real Practice, Real Confidence)
**You’ve been living in Italy for months… maybe even years…** **but you still don’t really *live* in Italian.** You understand. You try. But when it’s time to speak, something holds you back. Not enough practice. Too much pressure. Or simply… no space that feels safe enough. I know this, because I’ve lived it. Learning the local language is what finally made me feel at home. That’s why I created this. **Welcome to The Village — a space to *experience* Italian, not just learn it.** This is for you if: – you want to actually speak, not just listen – you’re willing to make mistakes and grow from them – you value connection, presence and a positive group energy – you’re ready to step out of your comfort zone (gently, but consistently) This is **not** a traditional class. And it’s not for passive learners. In The Village, we: – practice real-life conversations – use role play, games and embodied exercises – support each other (no judgment, no pressure) – build confidence session after session The goal is simple: to help you feel more at home in Italy — in your body, and in your voice. I guide the space to make sure everyone speaks, feels included, and grows. **Small group. Real connection. Consistent practice.** If this resonates, contact me and I will share all details to attend: Francesca: +44 7551910793 Payment: 5x 2 hrs sessions: 50 euros, drop in sesson 12 euros

Aristotle's Café
Aristotle's Café
Come join us for in-depth discussions on topics relating to moral and political philosophy. This is a group for members who are comfortable discussing topics that are often anxiety producing and controversial. *"Aristotle was a realist who believed that reality and knowledge are found in the physical world, accessible through sensory experience and logic. This led to contrasting views on ethics, politics, and the nature of reality itself. Plato emphasized abstract, ideal concepts, while Aristotle prioritized empirical observation and the study of the natural world."* \- Google Gemini Following Aristotle's lead, this group will lean heavily on empirical data to make arguments. The Socratic method is still the preferred way to engage in conversation, and Platonic Idealism is still relevant to the conversation as points of reference.

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Popes and Politics
Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Popes and Politics
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Popes and Politics,”** on the history of clashes between pontiffs and world leaders, with Vanessa Corcoran, medieval historian at Georgetown University and scholar of the history of the Roman Catholic church. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/northern-virginia-popes-politics](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/northern-virginia-popes-politics) .] President Trump recently shocked many by unleashing personal attacks on Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pope, in a post on the Truth Social platform. Trump has been widely criticized by religious leaders for these remarks, made in response to the pontiff’s advocacy of peace with the U.S and Israel at war with Iran, and for his separate posts of AI-generated images depicting himself as a pope and as Jesus. For his part, Pope Leo has told journalists, “I am not afraid of the Trump administration,” and has found himself at the center of a heated debate over the proper role of any pope when it comes to commenting on global politics. As unsettling as such developments might be to Roman Catholics, they’re hardly unprecedented. Disagreements between popes and world leaders go back to the Middle Ages, and have played a significant role in shaping the Church and its role in the world. Explore the long history of popes’ conflicts with politicians with Vanessa Corcoran, a historian of the Roman Catholic Church who previously has given excellent talks on papal conclaves and the evolution of nativity scenes. She’ll discuss fascinating developments such as the fourteenth century Avignon Papacy, when Philip IV of France got the upper hand in a feud with the Church by pressuring a papal conclave to select a French pope and then getting the church’s leadership relocated from Rome to Avignon for nearly 70 years. In drawing parallels between recent events and medieval attacks on the Church’s authority she’ll describe how today’s anti-Church memes echo the anti-pope and anti-Catholic images that Martin Luther disseminated in large numbers with the help of woodcut printing. We’ll look at tensions between past presidents and past popes over not just wars, but issues such as abortion, stem-cell research, and abortion access. The talk will leave you with a deeper appreciation of the inherent tensions between politics and matters of faith. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)
