IN PERSON: Alexandria Euchre Club (05/14) 2nd Thursday @ Ramparts Grill
IN PERSON: Alexandria Euchre Club (05/14) 2nd Thursday @ Ramparts Grill
**Members can begin RSVP'ing for this In Person Meetup two weeks before the event.** ++++++++++++++++++++++++ **Our 2nd Thursday of the month Euchre Location:** Ramparts Tavern & Grill 1700 Fern Street, Alexandria, VA [https://www.rampartstavern.com/](https://www.rampartstavern.com/) GPS: [https://goo.gl/maps/embeJAi5iFGdbNca8](https://goo.gl/maps/embeJAi5iFGdbNca8) **Parking:** * Burke & Herbert Bank Parking Lot across the street * CVS Parking Lot behind the restaurant * Neighborhood street parking ++++++++++++++++++++++++ * **Middle Room Opens @ 6:30pm (Gary will be there).** * **Please arrive by 7:00pm.** * **Please don't leave before 9:30pm.** * We are in the middle room, accessible via the bar or the restaurant. * We start play as soon as we have enough people to get a table going. * We will be getting our bills at 9:30pm so we are all settled by 10:00pm. * Ramparts doesn't close until well after 10:00pm so there isn't a rush for us to get out or anything. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ **For those new or haven't been in awhile, here is some basic information about our meetup:** 1. **Know How to Play the Game**: Every member of the Alexandria Euchre Club must know how to play the game of Euchre to attend a meetup. If you know the game, but it has been years since you've played, that is fine as we've all been there and will be patient while it comes flooding back to you. 2. **New To The Group:** If you have never been, we are a friendly group and welcome everyone to come. Very few people come with a friend or spouse. What this means is that it will not be awkward to arrive alone. It is better than a happy hour because it is easy to make conversation about cards. You don't have to even ask the dreaded "what do you do?" question. If you come three times, you are a regular. Also, house rules are that we play stick the dealer (ask if you don't know this variation). 3. **Correct Table Count:** Euchre is a 4 person game--yes, I know there are 3 and 6 person variations, but most people prefer the 4 person game. What this means is that if you sign-up, we are counting on you to be there. The deadline for RSVP is 2 days prior to the meet-up. Please update by that time, especially if you are going to cancel your RSVP. If you get 3 "no shows" and you'll only be able to sign up via an organizer. 4. **The Waiting List:** If this month is like the previous months, we will have a waiting list. Please be considerate and honor your RSVP. Of course, if you are sick and on death's door we don't want you to come out and get the rest of us sick; however, if not please do come play. A good evening of food, drink, cards, and friendship may be all that you need to be more productive the next day. If you are on the waiting list I am expecting you to either remove yourself if you don't want to be considered for an open slot, or check the site (or email) so you know you've been promoted to an RSVP of YES when a slot opens up. 5. **Costs:** There are some costs associated with meetup -- I have to pay Meetup every 6 months for listing on their website. They don't work off of advertising fees. We pass the bowl around and ask people to throw a $1 in each time they come. Thanks everyone... looking forward to seeing ya !! You can’t handle the truth! Or can you?
You can’t handle the truth! Or can you?
Details Location: Crimson Whiskey Bar (Either the downstairs whiskey bar, or main floor bar, TBD) The purpose of Thinkers and Drinkers is to facilitate casual but meaningful and interesting conversations with other people in a face-to-face setting. The topics cover a wide variety of issues and are different for every meeting. While conversations may get heated at times, we ask that all members be respectful of each other and refrain from personal insults. \*\*\* **Topic: Are individuals at fault for the fact that the most widely used information sources often fail to provide the nuanced dichotomy required to express the truth? Did our desire for affirmation, entertainment, or oversimplified explanations create the misinformation age?** Modern technology ensures that misinformation can be generated and disseminated faster and at a lower cost than ever before. Algorithms and automated systems facilitate the rapid spread of content that reinforces existing worldviews, often outpacing information that challenges them. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, it can provide an endless supply of misleading content that is increasingly difficult to distinguish from the truth. While technological advancements may offer potential solutions for verifying authenticity, the immense profits and political power gained from distorting or controlling reality often create significant incentives to prevent the implementation of such safeguards. Given these profound supply-side challenges, the demand and consumption of misinformation should be explored more. Understanding and then evolving the psychological motivations of consumers —such as the desire for affirmation, entertainment, or oversimplified explanations—may be the final line of defense in reclaiming an objective reality. **Questions to consider:** When is the last time you read something that made you think your opinion had been wrong? Is the misinformation age a demand side problem or is that victim blaming? Can we change ourselves instead of hoping to rein in the tech and news giants that have outgrown government regulations or borders? Did you learn something this week that shocked you/ made you change your mind? **Quotes to ponder:** “Truth will ultimately prevail where pains is taken to bring it to light.” George Washington “The masses have never thirsted after truth. They turn aside from evidence that is not to their taste, preferring to deify error, if error seduce them. Whoever can supply them with illusions is easily their master; whoever attempts to destroy their illusions is always their victim.” Gustave Le Bon **Sources to consider:** Please consider sharing your own source that challenged one of your opinions, whether an article, podcast, book or something else. If you’ve never read it, please consider reading Plato’s allegory of cave (chapter 7 of The Republic) https://web.sbu.edu/theology/bychkov/plato%20republic%207.pdf

Popular Board Games and Card Games
Popular Board Games and Card Games
We invite you to get acquainted with some popular modern European board games. We grew up enjoying Careers, Clue, Monopoly, and other such games. These new games are even better. They are easy to learn and are loved by a wide range of players. People will be available to teach how to play each of the games described below. Beginners are welcome. Everyone is welcome to bring other board games and card games that you think people will enjoy. The Mexican Train domino game, Stone Age, and Alhambra are likely to be available. Scrabble and Rumikub have been mentioned as possibilities. **TICKET TO RIDE**: Engaging for players of almost any age, Ticket to Ride is great fun. The rules are simple, but deciding what plays to make in any specific game situation remains interesting and enjoyable for years. **CATAN**: In this game players act as competitive settlers. They acquire resources, trade them with other players, and build and develop their holdings on the island of Catan. Players gain victory points as their settlements grow. A feature that makes it easy to enjoy this game over and over is that the island is different for every game. It consists of hexagonal terrain tiles that can connect in any order. **CARCASSONNE**: Players take turns placing tiles to build a land with cities, farms, roads, and cloisters. They earn points by claiming and completing those things. This game remains enjoyable, time after time, for years. All are invited to come to the Lodge as guests of Virginia Colin. Please make sure that she signs you in. Drinks and good quality bar food will be available for purchase. Salads, onion rings, and sweet potato fries are recommended by many of us.
