They decide what gets made. Pitching skills are the one skill often overlooked by writers, directors and producers. Learn how it’s done by watching the rest. Hone your pitching skills by getting instant feedback. Your pitch could be taken up by one of our panel. Past Pitches that have gone into production include Meet The Parents (1994), 51st State (1995), Siamese Cop (1996) and White Bhaji (2001). Registrations to pitch are taken on a first come, first served basis in reply to an email which will be sent at a predetermined time on the day of the event. There are twenty places guaranteed to pitch. Once the first 20 places have been filled we will keep a waiting list. The demand to pitch is high and admission does not guarantee you a slot to pitch. However, we will accommodate as many pitches as possible and if you’re on the waiting list this does not necessarily mean you won’t get the opportunity. Not ready to pitch? Then just come, watch, learn and network. \*Verbal pitches only, no visuals \*Panelists subject to change ## The Panelists on 22nd September 2025 were: ## **[Martyn Pick](https://www.martynpick.com)** **Martyn Pick** is a British director and artist known for his fusion of live-action and animation, often blending computer-generated, hand-drawn, and painted elements with cinematic storytelling. SHORT SHAKESPEARE - Masterclass with former Head of Acting at RADA
SHORT SHAKESPEARE - Masterclass with former Head of Acting at RADA
A two-hour practical workshop with Ellis Jones, former Head of Acting at RADA. Obviously, your show-reel should demonstrate your range of acting skills - and this can include showing how well you handle Shakespeare. Now as we know, casting directors have a short attention span! However - several have said to us they'd welcome a reel including Shakespeare - as a 'yardstick' alongside scenes from modern scripts. This workshop will help you create maximum impact within a short onscreen Shakespeare clip. Please come prepared with a carefully edited *one minute* extract from a monologue of your choice, or one chosen from a 'menu' of edited speeches which Ellis will send you as soon as you have applied to take part. The workshop will also provide an opportunity to share working on one of a choice short, edited 'two-hander' scenes - which again Ellis will supply in advance. This is an opportunity to include a striking ‘classical’ element in your offer as serious professional performer. Email: actinggymnasium@gmail.com

⏳🎬 MERCY
⏳🎬 MERCY
***🧑‍⚖️ If the future means swapping out judges for hot AI, well, let’s just say we might end up screwed in more ways than one!*** 👋 **Hey guys** so if the future means we get judged by gorgeous AI instead of grumpy old judges, we might be in for some hot trouble! In other words, **Mercy** might just prove that getting a fair trial in the near future is going to come with a whole new level of eye candy and probably a lot more confusion!” So just to fill you in: the movie is directed by **Timur Bekmambetov**—yep, the guy behind **[Wanted](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edpEspHOeVU)** and **[Night Watch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWQ2_0HBucw)**—and it’s set in a futuristic Los Angeles. The gist is that **Chris Pratt’s** character has to prove his innocence to an AI judge, played by **Rebecca Ferguson.** If you’re into a mix of sci-fi twists and a little courtroom drama, this one sounds like a lot of fun. We're keeping this one laid-back and easygoing—think of it as a **chill social film review**. We’ll lock in the exact details closer to the date, so keep an eye on this page for updates. For now, just keep in mind that swapping out human judges for AI is still more sci-fi than reality—at least for now—thanks to a whole bunch of ethical puzzles. But hey, it could still happen someday soon, so be very afraid… or at least very amused! LOL. **See you guys at the meet up!** **Jonny** \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- 👉 **HEADS UP** * If you ***sign up*** but later can’t make it, please 🙏 **just drop us a quick message** (or change your RSVP) — it really helps with planning. The Haunting of Hill House @ The Mad Hatter Pub
“Am I walking toward something I should be running away from”? For our next read, we will discuss Shirley Jackson’s classic ghost story The Haunting of Hill House on Saturday January 24th. **About the book:** * The Haunting of Hill House is a 1959 American gothic horror novel. * Shirley Jackson drew inspiration from real-life accounts of paranormal investigators and 19th-century psychic researchers. * Considered a masterpiece of the genre, it was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction in 1959. **About the event:** * Location: The Mad Hatter Pub, 3-7 Stamford St, London SE1 9NY * Timing: Saturday Jan 24th from 3-5pm. Approximately 15 minutes walk from Waterloo station along the river. Manhunter (1986)
Manhunter (1986)
Michael Mann's Manhunter is technically a prequel to Silence of the Lambs (it was remade as the vastly inferior Red Dragon), where FBI agent and master criminal profiler Will Graham is tasked with catching The Tooth Fairy, a gruesome serial killer targeting families during the full moon. But Graham is meant to be recovering after the traumatic ordeal of recently catching Hannibal Lecter and remains psychologically fragile. And he's up against the clock. Anyway, this is legitimately in my all-time top five movies. Oh, you need more? The casting is superb, with William Petersen, fresh from To Live and Die in LA, playing Graham perfectly as a damaged individual battling against the odds. Brian Cox's Lecter is far more down to earth than Hopkins' and he almost steals the film in his brief screentime. But what really makes this stand out is Dante Spinotti's stunning cinematography and the fantastic score. Synthesisers, neon and designer stubble baby, this is the 80's *in excelsis* and it is magisterial. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zl6IxPJSVc Movie starts at 6.15pm so let's meet in the bar upstairs beforehand and maybe grab one there afterwards.

Prime Cut (1972)
Prime Cut (1972)
People say [George](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQRqqvQWce8) [Miller](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_K_YjL29OoU)'s had a varied career, but Michael Ritchie directed two Bad News Bears movies and the most intelligent political movie of the 1970's in The Candidate, as well as this, one of the decade's darkest and most outrageous crime thrillers. It's actually a film that could only have been made in the 70's, mixing an A-list cast (Lee Marvin! Gene Hackman! Sissy Spacek!), a Lalo Schiffrin score and high-budget action scenes with a bizarre array of plot points and a loathing of simple country folk comparable to Deliverance, which was released the same year. Marvin plays Devlin, a hard-as-nails enforcer for the Chicago mob who's instructed to take a few men to rural Kansas to collect a debt from Mary Ann, the local crime boss and meatpacking plant owner, played by Hackman. The last guy who tried got sent back as sausages, which is only the start of the craziness and horror that awaits Devlin once he gets there. Seriously, it gets weird! And how is Warren Oates *not* in this? Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBW3Rlw4mlw Tickets [here](https://thenickel.co.uk/screening/68). We can go for a pint somewhere nearby to discuss the film afterwards.

A Must See movie by Christopher Nolan! How can you reconstruct the past if you can't remember it? Leonard Shelby, an amnesiac, must do precisely that but so do we as viewers because much of the movie is told backwards. Nolan uses every cinematic trick in the book to help us see things as Shelby sees it. Widely acclaimed, we hope you will too!

Book Exchange and Slow Horses by Mick Herron
Book Exchange and Slow Horses by Mick Herron
Join us for Slow Horses and a Book Exchange! In addition to our usual chat about the book, we’ll be exchanging books. Bring two books you’re willing to part with and we’ll exhange books. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- Welcome to the thrilling and unnervingly prescient world of the slow horses. This team of MI5 agents is united by one common bond: They've screwed up royally and will do anything to redeem themselves. This special tenth-anniversary deluxe edition of a modern classic includes a foreword by the author, discussion questions for book clubs, and an exclusive short story featuring the slow horses. London, England: Slough House is where washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what's left of their failed careers. The "slow horses," as they're called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated there. Maybe they botched an Op so badly they can't be trusted anymore. Maybe they got in the way of an ambitious colleague and had the rug yanked out from under them. Maybe they just got too dependent on the bottle-not unusual in this line of work. One thing they have in common, though, is they want to be back in the action. And most of them would do anything to get there-even if it means having to collaborate with one another. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, the slow horses see an opportunity to redeem themselves. But is the victim really who he appears to be?
