Even though each village had its own distinct history and characteristics, the two were miles apart in their development. One was industrial, and the other residential, all under the watchful gaze of Mr. Jarvis. Oh and let's not forget the brewer Mr. Bloore, notice the spelling? Named for the wild roses that littered the hills above the homestead of William Jarvis and his wife Mary, Rosedale is an iconic Toronto district with elegant houses, manicured lawns, and a fascinating history! Yorkville to the southwest is tied in with the history of Rosedale, but barely, and runs parallel to the development of both the neighbourhood and the surrounding area. With the Yorkville Brick Works, and the tidy ravine to the east it was a picturesque part of Toronto that remained pretty much rural into the late 19th century. On this walking tour we explore both districts, and how Rosedale emerged as an affluent Toronto suburb, but all was not good, as the district approached the 1930s depression. With a large proportion of rooming houses, Rosedale slipped in influence and affluence. This walking tour is for all walking levels and fitness skills. Please dress for the season and bring water. And remember to bring your love of history. This tour begins across the street from the Rosedale Subway Station in Ramsden Park. The tour returns to the start location after the walk! We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM. It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily.
