# Philosophical Psychology **Welcome to Philosophical Psychology!** This group is a space for curious minds who believe that understanding the human psyche requires more than data and diagnoses — it demands deep reflection and a willingness to sit with important questions. Join us on our Walks, where we philosophize about life and share our wisdom as we walk through parks and nature. The main goal is to get together and share our views on life and the world around us. We will examine one specific question during this walk. Depending on the group size, we will select some speakers who will share their views on this topic, then some strengths and weaknesses, before we wrap it up with everyone sharing their views. In this session, we explore the figure of the intellectual, the belletrist who rose from a position of suspicion and ridicule to become, through the written word, a force capable of defending democracy and shaping our collective moral consciousness. Along the way, we'll consider a curious paradox: how well-written fiction in an imaginary book can profoundly shape our perception of reality, and, with it, our judgment and decisions as individuals and as a society. Turning from fiction to fact, one historical and canonical case study will help us examine how critical thinking and the courageous intervention of intellectuals helped a society confront its own prejudices, biases, conspiracies, and fallacies, and in doing so, helped save its democracy and uphold its universal values. We will then turn to the evolution of relentless technology, from the Belle Époque to today, to ask what has changed in the power and influence of the 'man of letters' vis-à-vis the technologies we've developed, and what risks we now face, more than ever, as cracks in our democracies widen through a consciousness increasingly compromised by shady influencers. This talk is the second in a three-part series examining how new technologies, cultural intermediaries, and information systems shape our beliefs in subtle but consequential ways. Buenas de nuevo, gatos curiosos! **El día 20 de junio propongo un plan matinal en el que asistiremos a una sesión a bóveda completa del planetario de la fundación CosmoCaixa y visitaremos la parte del museo dedicada a la Astronomía , la sala universo( no el museo completo, pues requeriría más tiempo.)** **Después de la visita al planetario, propongo que nos traslademos al restaurante temático Verne, dedicado a este gran maestro y pionero de la ciencia ficción.** Este restaurante, ubicado en la calle Aribau, 150, es el ideal para tomarse un refresco y admirar su ambientación , pues parece que estás en un submarino o comiendo en las entrañas de la tierra. **La sesión del planetario es de 8 euros, que incluye entrada al museo. En el restaurante Verne, especializado en tapas y rolls bocadillos con muchos ingredientes, cada uno paga lo que consume.** Espero que os guste este plan alternativo al de la agrupación Astronómica Aster, a la que he renunciado por el alto coste que nos pedían por persona. El presidente nos exigía 30 euros por persona por una hora y media de actividad y , al intentar rebajar el precio, se me ha negado. Se trata de pasarlo bien, pero sin que el precio sea excesivo, al menos esa es mi filosofía en este grupo. Os espero en este astronómico encuentro! Hasta pronto!!

Buenas! (English below) Cada día aparecen formas nuevas de aprender español, (y otros idiomas) apps nuevas, métodos de gramática, IA, videos de profes explicando cosas, y están todas genial. Si te ayudan a entender más y a hablar mejor están genial. El plan de este grupo es mejorar tu español con juegos, actividades reales y ejercicios para hablar más. Con la excusa de los juegos y las actividades corregimos la mayoría de errores: Palabras difíciles, confundir pasados, preposiciones, verbos que significan muchas cosas, ser y estar en pasado, frases con dos verbos o mas, subjuntivo, expresiones coloquiales, y también los errores "culturales”: ¿De que forma usamos los españoles el idioma en diferentes situaciones? La gente que participa es (casi siempre) muy simpática, y normalmente deja reviews muy positivas de las clases. Si te cuadra el plan ven a practicar tu español y hablamos de comida, de viajes, de trabajo, de cultura, de Internet, de temas locales, de noticias y de muchas más cosas. Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club. Come grab a drink and a seat at The Oracle. **Optional topic for this meetup: Where is everybody?** In 1950 the physicist Enrico Fermi was talking about aliens over lunch and asked a question that still has not gone away: if the universe is so vast and so old, and even a fraction of those billions of stars have planets, where is everyone? By the numbers the galaxy should be crowded with civilizations. Instead we look up and hear silence. That gap between "they should be everywhere" and "we see no one" is the Fermi Paradox. One of the most unsettling answers is the idea of a **Great Filter**: somewhere on the road from dead chemistry to a galaxy-spanning civilization, there is at least one step that is almost impossible to get past. Maybe the filter is behind us. Maybe life starting at all, or simple cells becoming complex, or intelligence ever evolving, is the freak accident, and we already cleared the hard part. Or maybe the filter is ahead of us, and advanced civilizations reliably wipe themselves out before they spread. Here is the part that messes with people. If we ever found life somewhere else, even pond scum on Mars, most people would call it the greatest discovery in history. But it might be the worst possible news. It would mean life is common, the early steps are easy, and the hard step is still in front of us. So the eerie silence overhead might actually be the best sign we could ask for. **Questions to wrestle with:** * Is it better to be alone? Would you rather we find alien life and learn we are not special, or find nothing and quietly improve our odds of surviving? * Where do you bet the filter sits, behind us or ahead of us, and why? * If it is ahead of us, what is it? Nuclear war, climate collapse, AI, something we cannot even picture yet? And can we do anything about a filter we cannot see coming? * Two principles pull opposite ways here. The principle of mediocrity (the Copernican principle, Sagan's "no privileged place in the universe") says we are ordinary, so what happened on Earth probably happened everywhere, which makes the silence scream louder. The anthropic principle says of course we find ourselves somewhere life was possible, since we could not observe anything else, so our being here may say almost nothing about how common life is. Which lens do you trust, and does the silence still demand an answer once you account for observer selection? * And if we did confirm life out there and had to accept we are not special, what would that do to belief in a higher power, and would shedding (or keeping) that belief help or hurt our odds of pulling together as one species? * Does any of this change how you live, or how humanity should be spending its time and money right now?
