Why Conversations Break Down — and How to Fix Them in Real Life
Why Conversations Break Down — and How to Fix Them in Real Life
*This is a completely different event than ones we've previously held, covering a unique angle on the subject of relationships.* Shyness and anxiety in relationships are often treated as personal flaws or things to “push through.” In many cases, they're actually signals that something in the interaction isn't stable or clear, and your system is reacting appropriately. This live, in-person workshop explores what causes anxiety and hesitation to arise in communication, and what helps it naturally settle. Without forcing confidence, scripts or exposure-style pressure. **You’ll likely relate if:** * You replay conversations later and think, *“That’s not what I meant.”* * You hesitate or overthink when it’s time to speak up. * Conversations drift into tension even when everyone has good intentions. * You want to connect better—but don’t want scripts or fake confidence. If any of that sounds familiar, this session will feel immediately relevant. **What makes this worth showing up for** This is **not a lecture** and not a networking event. It’s a **guided, interactive workshop** where you’ll: * Learn why conversations break down in the first place * Experience what actually restores understanding * Practice being more present and composed in real time * Leave feeling more comfortable in conversations—without forcing anything Most people notice a difference **during the session itself**, not weeks later. Workshops like this are rare because they: * Stay small on purpose * Focus on fundamentals instead of trends * Require live participation to be effective If communication has ever felt like a bottleneck in your life— skipping this tends to feel obvious *after* the fact. **Who this is especially good for** * Thoughtful, introspective, or introverted people * Professionals who want clearer communication at work * Anyone navigating relationships, boundaries, or confidence * People tired of tips that don’t translate into real life You don’t need to be outgoing. You don’t need experience. You just need curiosity.
Profs & Pints DC: Empathy 101
Profs & Pints DC: Empathy 101
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Empathy 101,”** a research-based examination of our ability to understand others and how to improve it, with Jamie Keaton Jones, instructor in the Child and Family Social Work Fellowship Program at Walter Reed Military Hospital, adjunct professor at Fordham University, and founder of The Psychotherapy Studio PLLC in Washington D.C. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-empathy-101](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-empathy-101) .] In these uncertain and divided times, empathy for others—and for ourselves—might be just what we need to reduce our anxiety and constructively work together. Yet many of us lack much of an understanding of our capacity for understanding and how we can nurture it. Take a deep dive into the subject of empathy with Dr. Jamie Keaton Jones, a therapist and university instructor who studies empathy and teaches empathetic skills to students. Drawing on insights from social psychology, neuroscience, and social work, she’ll discuss what exactly empathy is and why it’s necessary for survival. She’ll also dispel common empathy-related myths and review specific ways to practice empathic responses. She’ll talk about mirror neurons—which fire in both someone taking an action and another observing that action—and the important role they play in empathy. She’ll offer guidance on how to assess one’s own level of empathy, and she’ll discuss “empathy deficit disorder” and what it’s like to be excessively empathetic. We’ll discuss how we can best show empathy to a friend or family member in crisis and how can we use empathy to connect when we disagree. Among the questions Dr. Jones will tackle: Can empathy be taught? Can it be captured by Artificial Intelligence? What might the world look like if empathy suddenly ceased to exist? All Profs and Pints talks seek to make people smarter, but this one might help you become kinder as well. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.) Image by Canva.

A lunch time visit to Mount Vernon
A lunch time visit to Mount Vernon
12:30 today (TUESDAY) at George Washington's Mount Vernon: on-leash walk with Tia's Apollo et. al. Meet front entrance or (best bet) 12-Acre Field. Or ask staff if they've seen a big, fluffy dog & find us. If coming, please PM Tia and/or RSVP at [Meetup](https://www.facebook.com/groups/916975895009304/user/100064559029084/?__cft__%5B0%5D=AZbSS3h0JaLCHdbBuEXIOac23sgCs9PQ7JQIuIxPR7jXaH2pfRm4E56Z7a0CW-jKU9PdPkp7x4S9noZZyFWUARlZQnZlrzu7Wi0ViFU-upa9S4-p5HvTRDBAZAzInnwVKbEMFrc-1cJExcdGy4VV62KeTQGu4-8OAHEQIxcpLtltUULOoqWUEO0zq7wmFlGyqMUH8oB_7QAq8C0SSudxjdtw&__tn__=-%5DK-R) once posted. Dates scheduled: Jan 6, 13, 20, and 27 plus Feb 3. Humans pay. Dogs free. Adult day tickets $28; annual pass $69. If you like, come for a "dry run" sans dog to preview entrance/exit. Tia sometimes has an extra guest pass (PM to ask). Dogs MUST remain on leash. Not a formal tour. We go where allowed. Walk at your own pace or with the group. We might visit river, farm, forest, and outbuildings. Staff and historians love the dogs and are always eager to answer questions or share information about George Washington and life at Mount Vernon. IMPORTANT: Apollo is making good progress on reactivity to unknown dogs & staying calm near livestock, but enjoys pack walks. We appreciate \*SPACE\* but do well once acquainted with new dog friends. If your dog is similar, we'll get it, and give you space, too. Apollo is a low-key, tri-color English Shepherd, long and lanky, like a stretched-out Aussie (the breeds are close cousins from historic UK herding roots). I'm a white lady who will probably have pink hair and a purple coat or jacket. If we know you're coming, I can tell Apollo your names and life will go more smoothly for us.

Run and Get Dirty! Adult Dogs in the main park, puppies in the small dog park
Our regular Sunday meetup at the Shirlington Dog Park -- members start arriving around 10:15 a.m. You'll always find an Aussie to play with. There are 3 entrances, so wander the park -- the dogs will find each other! For puppies, Shirlington has a small dog park within the larger dog park. It's the prefect place for your puppy to gain confidence and socialize with others. There is also plenty of room to run. Just a reminder, the Dog Park is under attack by the Arlington County Board of Commissioners. While early plans to decrease the size of the park by 50% has been tabled, it's important to remind Arlington County how important this park is to dogs and owners. Here are links to the change.org petition and the Facebook page where you can get updates. Shirlington Dog Park Page Petition: https://www.change.org/.../arlington-county-board-save...
