First meeting of London "What do we want as a Sustainable Planet?"
First meeting of London "What do we want as a Sustainable Planet?"
The world is in crisis and many people think we've gone past the tipping point and the planet is doomed. However, there are those who have hope and faith in science that some can survive the polycrisis and get to live in a sustainable society and planet. But there's a problem... **There's no clear vision of what a sustainable society and planet should be**, and without that destination, how can we set out on the journey to get there? Please join like-minded people to discuss this. We'll agree an agenda at the start of the meeting. Bring an open mind, suggestions and perhaps a pad of paper. **Here are some topics to be covered.** Please use the comments/chat to suggest other areas for consideration *Depending on the mood of attendees, the frequency of further meetups can be agreed.* **WHAT DO WE WANT A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY AND PLANET TO LOOK AND FEEL LIKE?** · A planet with clean atmosphere, oceans and soil with systems in place to keep them that way · The abolition of poverty and hunger · Equality of opportunity for all to achieve a peaceful and contented life without fear of physical or other violence · Access to healthcare, hygiene and sanitation for all · Access to quality education for all · A more responsible system of financial structures which embraces the best of co-operative production, capitalism and other systems · A safe justice system for all · Societies which respect for the diversity of opinion, ethnicity, sexuality, religion · Respect for the natural resources and fragility of Planet Earth and their finite capacity · Societies where the more fortunate, stronger and healthier help those less strong, less fortunate or less healthy. · Peaceful co-existence between the varying communities of the planet **What Freedoms ?** · Freedom to travel anywhere · Freedom to worship (should there be limitation such as worship should not be based on destroying the existing system…??) · Freedom from violence · Freedom from hate · Freedom from poverty (how define?) · Freedom of speech · Freedom from anxiety about the future · Freedom from concentration of power · Freedom to preserve culture and arts · Freedom to make decisions about one’s body · Freedom to seek representation and to represent others · Freedom to be different · Freedom to be heard
China Study Group: Chuang Collective, "Sorghum & Steel" - Part 4 & Conclusion
China Study Group: Chuang Collective, "Sorghum & Steel" - Part 4 & Conclusion
**This is a the final chapter of our longform Tuesday-night reading group on China. If you didn't get to the first meetings, don't worry - come along anyway!** This time, we're finishing with chapter 4 , ***Ruination.*** Find the text here: [https://chuangcn.org/journal/one/sorghum-and-steel/4-ruination/](https://chuangcn.org/journal/one/sorghum-and-steel/4-ruination/) \-\-\-\- About the China Study Group: What can we learn from the Chinese Revolution? That's the question we'll seek to answer as LMRG brings the heat to you once again, now on Tuesday nights, with our all-new China Study Group. In this long-form reading series, we'll meet monthly for in-depth discussion of a series of texts on China, its revolution, the socialist market economy, and more. As the [New Cold War](https://thetricontinental.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/20221107_MR-NCW_EN_Web.pdf) heats up, it's never been more important to learn what we can about the country which the US, UK and EU have all described - following the [American phrasebook](https://www.gmfus.org/news/china-systemic-rival-systemic-threat) \- as a "systemic rival"\. For the first set of meetups within this series, we'll be tackling *Sorghum and Steel: The Socialist Developmental Regime and the Forging of China* by the [Chuang](https://chuangcn.org) collective. Chuang is an independent, autonomous collective of anti-authoritarian Chinese communists and labour activists whose work provides a rare opportunity for English readers to get vital detail on historical and contemporary dynamics within Chinese society from a materialist, communist, and crucially - balanced perspective. *Sorghum and Steel* will provide our Study Group with an essential foundation in Chinese history to equip us going forward. Throughout this series, we'll give equal space to a wide variety of sources, from anti-authoritarian Chinese communists opposed to the contemporary Politburo to members of Xi Jinping's own ideological brain-trust. We'll dig deep into elements of the Chinese revolutionary experience such as the CPC's localist co-operative economics of the Civil War period, the forgotten grass roots of the Cultural Revolution, the *Boulan Fazheng* period and China's rejection of "shock therapy" as seen in the USSR, and the theory underpinning China's recent turn away from the liberal economics of the 2000s. Take care everyone and happy reading!

Monday Mafia Game & Social – Beginner Friendly – Hydrant (Monument)
Monday Mafia Game & Social – Beginner Friendly – Hydrant (Monument)
**Welcome to UK Mafia!** On Monday the 16th we meet at **The Hydrant (Monument)** on the **Second Floor** (see large function room). It is near **London Bridge**. **Do I need to know anything beforehand?** This is a **beginner-friendly** event, and many will be playing with us for the first time. If you are new, **arrive early** to hear explanations of the rules, and you will get to play many games. We will also explain strategies. Most importantly, this is a social activity, so feel free to talk to anyone between the games and have fun! \* *If you are an intermediate player, there is a separate intermediate table on the other side of the floor \** **️‍♂️ What is Mafia?** Have you seen 'The Traitors'? Play the game that 'Traitors' is based upon! Mafia is a 10-player social game; it can get competitive, but it's easy to learn. We play at multiple tables. You get a secret role and work with your team to win. A game lasts about 45 minutes, so we play many during the day. The **Mafia team** tries to hide and eliminate the **Citizens**, while the **Citizens** try to find the Mafia through deduction and logic. While this is a **beginner-friendly** event, we also host tournaments and online events with players from around the world. Ask us about our online games! We even organise trips abroad to meet and play with other Mafia clubs, so ask us about it when we meet✈️ *** **[How to Play?](https://bit.ly/HowToPlayMafia)** We will teach you how to play when you arrive. You will quickly see that the game has two phases: **Night:** * The Mafia secretly targets a Citizen * The *Don* (Mafia) learns if a player is the *Sheriff* * The *Sheriff* (Citizen) learns if someone is Mafia ☀️ **Day:** * Each player says in their turn who they think the Mafia are * Then, everyone votes publicly to eliminate one player The game continues until the Mafia are eliminated or they outnumber (or equal) the Citizens. We will explain all the rules at the venue, and you’ll pick it up. Want to learn more about the game? Pantheism - The idea that God is Nature, and Nature is God.
Pantheism - The idea that God is Nature, and Nature is God.
We are delighted to welcome guest speaker **François Hallac**, who will give a short talk on **Spinoza’s pantheism**. The talk will provide a starting point for a broader, open discussion of pantheism during the meeting. Spinoza invites us to rethink everything by identifying God with Nature: a single infinite Substance whose attributes—thought and extension—shape all that exists. Human beings are modes of this vast unity, our minds and bodies expressions of the same divine order. To live well is to actualise our essence through understanding our desires, for joy is the fruit of clarity. Like Descartes, Spinoza seeks clear and distinct ideas, yet he rejects dualism and embraces determinism: nothing is contingent, only misunderstood. Freedom arises when reason aligns us with Nature itself. In this union, the philosopher discovers genuine happiness and a profound sense of belonging to the whole. No prior expertise is required—curiosity and a willingness to think together are enough. Early bird tickets at £3 will be available until Mon March 9 **Where:** Downstairs room, Square Pig, Holborn (private room) **NB:** The event begins at 7pm, doors open at 6:50pm. Event ends at 9pm **Format:** 10-minute intro talk → vote on questions → small-group discussion → share insights with the whole room

Discuss & Social 🍷 Why are women blamed for men's wrongs?
Discuss & Social 🍷 Why are women blamed for men's wrongs?
*"She dressed too sexy", "She was out late at night", "Why didn't she leave sooner?"...* these are some of the ways in which women victims across all cultures are blamed for getting in harm's way or even for provoking the men who harmed them. Men, in contrast, are often shown more sympathy (or "Him-pathy") and understanding for the mistakes they commit, especially men of good character and status. Prof. Kate Manne explains that *“the emotions and perspectives of men are centred and those of women are set to one side."* We'll discuss... 1\. Should men who harm women ever deserve any sympathy? 2\. Should cultural differences be an excuse? 3\. What could be solutions to move the focus towards the perpetrator? Background reading: -[What Love Island teaches us about 'himpathy'](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jul/13/love-island-amy-hart-teaches-himpathy) (The Guardian) -[The the psychology of why some people side with perpetrators of sexual misconduct](https://theconversation.com/himpathy-the-psychology-of-why-some-people-side-with-perpetrators-of-sexual-misconduct-podcast-239860) (The Conversation) -[Women fight victim blaming every step of the way](https://www.bps.org.uk/psychologist/women-fight-victim-blaming-every-step-way) (British Psychological Society) *Join us for a relaxed group conversation where we explore the real life, the grey areas, and how our different cultures and backgrounds shape our views about key topics.* *Expect real talk, no judgment, and a chance to learn how others see it.* **\*Come for the discussion, stay for the friendships. Our weekly discussion series brings together thoughtful people for honest conversations on relationships, life, and society - with warm social vibes before and after.\*** **WHAT TO EXPECT:** * Good vibes only: we chat big topics in a chill, respectful way. No arguing - just open-minded exchange. * We warm up with casual socializing (come solo or with friends!) * The topic starts around 7:45/8pm, wraps around 9:30. * 🍕 There's pizza, drinks, milkshakes and snacks available at the bar (incl plant-based options) * And most people stay until late for drinks and mingling! **DISCUSSION FORMAT:** **\- Our group conversations are open and flexible\! There is a very soft guided flow to ensure we focus on the key questions\, and to ensure that everyone gets a balanced opportunity to speak\.** \- We rotate groups intentionally during the discussion so everyone gets to meet a wider mix of people and perspectives\. \- After the structured part\, you’re free to mix and mingle with anyone\. **Here's a typical discussion structure, but we may adjust this depending on the turnout:** \- Introductions and initial thoughts *(\~5 mins).* \- Group breakouts per question *(\~20 mins x 3).* \- Final round of opinions *(\~10 mins)*. \- Mix and mingle\, make new friends\, get drinks etc *(\~until late)* **Rules & etiquette:** 1\. Debate the topic\, not the participants \- no personal attacks please\. 2\. No phones\, no interrupting\, no bystanding\. 3\. Always follow the moderator/host instructions and guidelines\. **WHAT IS WORLD CITIZENS?** We're one of London's longest-running and largest communities. Since 2012 we run socials, cultural activities and stimulating discussions to foster meaningful exchange and learning among London's global professionals. NRWITBD 2026: Richard Appignanesi, Lenin for Beginners [1978]
NRWITBD 2026: Richard Appignanesi, Lenin for Beginners [1978]
[Fade in] The year is 2026. Picture this: industrial-scale war on multiple continents. Cities in ruins, millions dead and millions more made refugees - starvation, disease, mutilations, deportations, pogroms, genocides, dispossessions. Across every land, a working class on its knees before an ever-shrinking class of oligarchs with an ever-growing pile of treasure, weapons and slaves - determined to pit brother against brother in endless wars for resources that can only end when the whole earth is a toxic wasteland. And what they call "peace" is not much better. This is the brutal present, a [Second Gilded Age,](https://fortune.com/article/gilded-age-coming-back-layoffs-pay-inequality-labor-unions-ceos-billionaires-worker-pay/) but we could travel back a hundred years and describe more or less the exact same scene. In the century since Lenin lived and walked the earth, less has changed than the eternal optimists - Panglossian techno-liberals like Steven Pinker and the other intellectuals of the Epstein class - would like us to think. Really, we're back where it all began in the *First* Gilded Age of the late 19th and early 20th century: on the outside looking in, asking the age-old question: what is to be done? Things are really getting quite bad. No, really - what is to be done!!? In our gatherings of late, we've been tinkering around the edges of a few answers. Prior Lenin readings as well as our exploration of the Yan'an Forum and our whistle-stop tour through the last twenty years of street protests with Vincent Bevins have given us some things to chew on. Now there's been a clamour from plenty of regulars, as well as a few newcomers, that we continue to pull at the vital thread that seems to be running through all our discussions and see where it might lead us: namely, the revolutionary theories of Lenin. This will be a series of readings running every other Thursday night in Whitechapel. We'll start with something a little unusual for us: Richard Appignanesi's *Lenin for Beginners,* an illustrated guide to Lenin's life and thought designed for newcomers to Lenin and the Russian Revolution. Despite having lots of pictures and goofy cartoons, it's very much not dumbed down - it simply provides an accessible intro to concepts which can seem obscure in Lenin's own writing (given translation issues and the old-world style of a man from the 19th century). Find the text here (uploaded by me personally to Riseup Share, an encrypted service): https://share.riseup.net/#sk4GQeoLBxlb5U-Dn9D19w With *No, Really: What is to be done?,* we'll be taking a deep dive into revolutionary Marxism with a read-through of texts like Lars Lih's *Lenin rediscovered: what is to be done? in Context,* non-standard biographies like Carter Ellwood's *Non-Geometric Lenin: Essays on the Development of the Bolshevik Party 1910-1914* as well as some articles, essays and discussion prompts which most readers likely won't have encountered before. Take care and happy reading!

LCC Visits SOAS: Mughal Banaras: Forgotten Histories in a Troubled Present
LCC Visits SOAS: Mughal Banaras: Forgotten Histories in a Troubled Present
We will be visiting the SOAS gallery (University of London) to check out their exhibition on its last day. **Event Plan**: We will meet at the front of the gallery by 3pm. We will post an update in the comments on exact whereabouts if people have trouble finding us. We will aim to finish going through the exhibition before 5pm. We’ll stay together as a group while visiting the exhibition, but if you’d like to check anything out individually, feel free to do so and rejoin us later: we’ll be sharing our location throughout the event. After finishing a tour of the exhibition, we’ll gather for a relaxed debrief and social at either Russel Square or pub nearby (we will keep you posted on the location in person and in the event page). This will be a chance to hang out, connect, and share experiences together. **Please note the exhibition itself is free and no tickets are required to be purchased to view the same.** **The Exhibition: Mughal Banaras: Forgotten Histories in a Troubled Present** "Banaras, or Varanasi, in north India, is widely known as a Hindu pilgrimage city where devout pilgrims aspire to visit its temples or be cremated on the famous stepped terraces, or ghats, beside the river Ganges. This photography exhibition looks beyond this dominant perception, drawing attention to the city’s diverse communities and their profound role in shaping its rich history and urban heritage over the centuries, which are often overlooked in more familiar representations of the city. This exhibition throws light on Banaras’s rich Mughal past and present by going beyond the riverfront into the hidden lanes, neighbourhoods and sites associated with the ‘later’ Mughals, in particular Crown Prince Jahandar Shah, son of Emperor Shah Alam II. Jahandar Shah (1749–1788) was granted refuge in Banaras by the British, after fleeing courtly intrigues in Delhi. In 1788, he suddenly died and was buried in a place called Badshah Bagh. Without the protected status of early Mughal monuments, these sites remain marginalized and invisible in the public eye. Drawing on the collaboration between historian Malavika Kasturi and architect and photographer Jateen Lad, these photographs present everyday moments at these sites. Extensive archival research intertwined with religion, politics, architecture, urbanism and conservation highlight their enduring value and multiple fragilities. In today’s charged political environment, the Mughals are misrepresented in the public domain. Troubling arguments over contested claims and ever-present threats of demolition take aim at their built heritage. These photographs were taken in July 2023 and August 2024 during periods of heightened tensions in Banaras. Captured on mobile phones and compact cameras, they evoke a lingering atmosphere of unease and delicate uncertainty. In bringing together these sites of forgotten histories, this exhibition aims to further enrich understanding of the past and present of one of India’s most significant cities." More details can be found in the exhibition webpage here: https://www.soas.ac.uk/about/event/mughal-banaras-forgotten-histories-troubled-present **Accessibility**: Details on the gallery's accessibility is given here: https://www.soas.ac.uk/accessibility-statement Please note, we are committed to making every one of our events welcoming and safe for everybody. Our spaces are non-partisan, but not apolitical. Racism, sexism, antisemitism, classism, forms of discrimination based on sexual preference or gender identity are not tolerated. Columbus: A Study In Psalms--Psalm 3 and 4
Columbus: A Study In Psalms--Psalm 3 and 4
Most people would agree that a great night's sleep is one of the sweetest experiences in life. Crawling into a wonderfully comfortable bed, drifting off to peaceful slumber, and awaking, feeling refreshed, energized, and ready for the day is a gift everyone welcomes. Unfortunately, nights of perfect sleep and restfulness can seem scarce. Particularly, during the truly hard times in life, good sleep can seem an impossibility. The ancient shepherd-crowned-king, David, knew more than the average person about the challenge of getting a good night's sleep in the midst of being falsely maligned, hunted by enemies, and attacked by those who wanted him dead. He understood the terror of running for his life, and having thousands call for his death. What was his answer? Where could a man on the run find peace? What hope was there for a person in such circumstances? David's hope and peace were found in the One Who he knew was Perfect Truth, Justice, Mercy, and Grace, the God Who had delivered His people before and Who would do so again, and again, and again. Because of God's provision David twice details that even in the midst of his enemies, he would "lie down and sleep, and wake again." Psalm 3 and 4 point us to the hope in which those who follow after the Lord can be confident--that from the Lord comes deliverance. Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels. Hope to see you on March 28th!
