Discuss & Social 🍷 Personal boundaries & mixed signals in multicultural London
Discuss & Social 🍷 Personal boundaries & mixed signals in multicultural London
**Discussion overview:** Whether in social life, dating or work, everyone reacts differently when someone gets too close (or too far), physically or emotionally. But how much is too much? When does it become creepy? The answer is often personal, but also influenced by our culture: why do some cultures touch and hug everyone - is it romantic or friendly? Why do some overshare or ask about every little detail in life? And if someone asks for space, is it the end, or just going too fast? In a multicultural city like London where so many different cultures and social expectations meet, understanding different signals such as the need for space and boundaries can help us avoid misunderstandings and interact at the right rhythm. *Join us for a relaxed group conversation where we explore real life, grey areas, and how our different cultures and backgrounds shape our views about key topics.* *Expect real talk, no judgment, and a chance to learn how others see it.* **\*Come for the discussion, stay for the friendships. Our weekly discussion series brings together thoughtful people for honest conversations on relationships, life, and society - with warm social vibes before and after.\*** **WHAT TO EXPECT:** * Good vibes only: we chat big topics in a chill, respectful way. No arguing - just open-minded exchange. * We warm up with casual socializing (come solo or with friends!) * The topic starts around 7:45/8pm, wraps around 9:30. * 🍕 There's pizza, drinks, milkshakes and snacks available at the bar (incl plant-based options) * And most people stay until late for drinks and mingling! **DISCUSSION FORMAT:** **\- Our group conversations are open and flexible\! There is a very soft guided flow to ensure we focus on the key questions\, and to ensure that everyone gets a balanced opportunity to speak\.** \- We rotate groups intentionally during the discussion so everyone gets to meet a wider mix of people and perspectives\. \- After the structured part\, you’re free to mix and mingle with anyone\. **Here's a typical discussion flow, but we may adjust this depending on the turnout:** \- Introductions and initial thoughts *(\~5 mins).* \- Group breakouts per question *(\~20 mins x 3).* \- Final round of opinions *(\~10 mins)*. \- Mix and mingle\, make new friends\, get drinks etc *(\~until late)* **Rules & etiquette:** 1\. Debate the topic\, not the participants \- no personal attacks please\. 2\. No phones\, no interrupting\, no bystanding\. 3\. Always follow the moderator/host instructions and guidelines\. **WHAT IS WORLD CITIZENS?** We're one of London's longest-running and largest communities. SOLD OUT • TEiP BATTERSEA • S1E4: CHILDHOOD | Thought Experiments in Pubs
This episode is on a much requested theme: '**CHILDHOOD'**. We will explore it by way of three original thought experiments.💭 Hawkins Forge embodies our values: warm, welcoming, convivial, and a home to deep thinkers. The pub has boardgames and cards for the after party, and they’ve also **kindly offered us a deal on their Arrowsmiths Darts experience**: **30 minutes free for anyone who buys a drink after the event**. Spaces are limited, so get your ticket early if you want to be there 😊 **[WHATSAPP GROUP](https://chat.whatsapp.com/DapwAXpnOHO5DRYThobpe4)** \- stay in the loop **[INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/thoughtexperimentsinpubs/)** \- see what we look like \(including The People of TEiP project\) **[SUBSTACK](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/)** \- sign up for the newsletter and more **The idea:** A chance to meet and talk meaningfully about thought provoking topics. **How we'll do it** (timings approximate): * 7:00pm - Arrive at Hawkins Forge. We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us. * Organise ourselves into small groups (3-4) * Have a look at the **thought experiments** (announced on the day of the event) * 7:15 - First rotation begins - Talk about the first thought experiment, but feel free to pursue tangents and anecdotes. * 7:35 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the second thought experiment. * 8:00 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the third thought experiment. * 8:25pm - Wrap up - hear about upcoming events, feedback/requests for future meetups. * 8:30 Meetup ‘ends’. But feel free to carry on conversations. Usually a lot of us stay until late :-) **Notes on the general atmosphere**: * The vibe is to let conversation flow rather than stick strictly to one topic. * While we'd like to talk about 'meaningful things', we also see the value in lighter topics, so don't worry about not being 'deep' enough! * Feel free to suggest ideas for future Thought Experiments in Pubs meetup groups, both in terms of structure and topics to discuss. **Where we'll meet**: This group will be at Hawkins Forge, 5 minutes walk from Clapham Junction. We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us. **Who should come**: Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality... etc.... I'm so looking forward to meeting & talking with you in this beautiful location :-) If you would like to further support these meetups, please [subscribe to the newsletter](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/) and [follow us on instagram](https://www.instagram.com/thoughtexperimentsinpubs) :-) Thank you!

May Book Club Meetup: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
May Book Club Meetup: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
London's Friendly Book Club's pick for March is **Project Hail Mary** by **Andy Weir**. A lone astronaut. An impossible mission. An ally he never imagined. Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery-and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone. Or does he? Please only RSVP if you think you'll be able to make this event. **We host three sessions per book, you only need to attend one.** Everyone is welcome! Grab your copy and join us for a relaxed and engaging discussion.

Agentic A.I Hack Night London Hackathon + Drinks + Food
Agentic A.I Hack Night London Hackathon + Drinks + Food
All levels welcomed! Come and use Agentic A.I Skills to build an agent! Drinks / Food provided, and we're heading to the pub after the Hackathon. You MUST apply on Luma here: https://luma.com/hack-night-tessl-may13-2026?utm_source=meetup ## DO NOT RSVP here, you MUST RSVP on Luma, ## What's Hack Night? Five hours. One room full of builders. Zero fluff. As many demos as we can. Hack Night at Tessl is a London evening for people who would rather build than posture. You show up with an idea, find a team if you want one, spend a few focused hours shipping with a DJ in the background, and demo what you made before the night ends. Then we head to the pub. **When**: May 13\, 2026 \| 4:00 PM \- 8:45 PM BST **Where**: Tessl office, London **Who**: Hosted by : Adam Chan ([https://www.linkedin.com/in/itsajchan/](https://www.linkedin.com/in/itsajchan/?utm_source=luma)), Sam Hooti ([https://www.linkedin.com/in/sam-h-b79850387](https://www.linkedin.com/in/sam-h-b79850387?utm_source=luma)) and HackerSquad with Tessl The Judges: Four people who've actually built things worth shipping. They'll see your demo and give you real feedback. **James Pimentel-Pinto** — First European iPhone developer and inventor of the hybrid app model. Built the first mobile banking, eCommerce, and sports apps in the world, with over 27 App Store #1s. Expect feedback on craft, originality, and whether what you shipped could actually live in users' hands. [https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamespp/](https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamespp/?utm_source=luma) **Vy Alechnavicius** — Design and product leader, startup advisor. Has worked in human-centric AI, product craft, and developer experience. Expect feedback on product sense and whether what you built actually respects the person using it. [https://www.linkedin.com/in/vaexperience/](https://www.linkedin.com/in/vaexperience/?utm_source=luma) **Lachlan Chavasse** — Former founder of useDaily (personal AI), now launching Frontier Tower in London. Expect feedback on what's actually novel, where the real leverage is, and whether your idea holds up outside the demo. [https://www.linkedin.com/in/lchavasse/](https://www.linkedin.com/in/lchavasse/?utm_source=luma) **Pedro Proença** —Engineering leader who scaled a marketplace startup from 50 to 5,000 people, building the search and personalization that connected buyers and sellers across 40 countries. Then at big tech, helping tens of thousands of engineers ship safely to billions of users. Now at a scale-up working on AI adoption. Expect feedback on what pain you're actually solving, and whether people would keep using what you built. [https://www.linkedin.com/in/pedro-proenca](https://www.linkedin.com/in/pedro-proenca?utm_source=luma) ## Here's How It Works **4:00 PM - Doors Open**Check in, grab food, meet other builders, form groups, (or solo hack if you want) and decide what you're making. **4:30 PM - Opening Context**Quick welcome from the host and venue partner so everyone knows the flow for the night. **5:00 PM - Short Technical Remarks**If there are host or sponsor remarks, they stay short. The point is to get useful context, then get people building. **5:30 PM - Build Time**Heads down. Music on. Ship something. Use the time to test an idea, explore a tool, or finally build the thing you've been sitting on. **7:30 PM - Demo Time**Show what you made. Get feedback. See what everyone else shipped. **8:45 PM - Wrap Up**Final demos, shout-outs, and a clean finish to the night. And of course, Pub! We're heading to a pub nearby for a pint and a proper debrief. Come if you want to keep the conversation going. ## What You Need to Bring * Your laptop * An idea, or the willingness to find one there * A bias toward shipping Food will be handled. The space is handled. You just need to show up ready to build. ## Who Should Come? This is for developers, founders, technical operators, and AI-native product people who like building in the same room as other ambitious people. All skill levels are welcome as long as you're ready to participate. ## Why It's Worth It Hack Nights create the kind of pressure that helps you actually finish something. You leave with a working prototype, a new collaborator, or at minimum a stronger idea than the one you arrived with. ## Ready to Build? Register below once the page goes live. Space will be limited to the room capacity at Tessl. ## A big thanks to our sponsors for making this happen: ## Tessl Tessl helps you find, install, version, and evaluate the skills and context your coding agents rely on, so they behave consistently across tools and projects. [https://tessl.io/](https://tessl.io/?utm_source=luma) ## Neo4j Transform Your Data Into Knowledge for Deep, Contextual Understanding Connect and organize your data with a knowledge graph to see the bigger picture. “Privacy preserving age verification” is bullsh*t
“Privacy preserving age verification” is bullsh*t
Many governments are now pushing age verification and VPN restriction laws, lobbied by Big Tech companies, with no visible popular demand for it. Is that truly to "protect children", or is it better explained by desire to control and censor online speech, while appeasing their corporate donors? Let's discuss the future of the Internet, freedom from censorship, privacy vs. security trade-off, and other related topics. To kick off the conversation, we will look at Cory Doctorow's essay on age verification and "Online Safety Act" called ***[“Privacy preserving age verification” is bullshit](https://doctorow.medium.com/privacy-preserving-age-verification-is-bullshit-0aefd53019e0)***. *<...>politicians all over the world demanded a kind of impossible encryption: encryption that works perfectly when it’s doing something legitimate, like keeping hackers from pushing malware to your pacemaker or stealing your life’s savings or listening in on you through your phone’s microphone, but also they require that this encryption offer no protection to criminals, drug dealers, terrorists, child abusers, and other miscreants.* *This really is like water that’s not wet.*
Free Human Towers Rehearsal + Social (Sunday)
Free Human Towers Rehearsal + Social (Sunday)
Sunday rehearsal with Castellers of London. Meet us at the OBC Community Centre to help build human towers! This get together is a great opportunity for you to meet new friends, socialise and have a go and explore your abilities as a human tower builder a.k.a Casteller! For newcomers we have a team of trained Castellers who will introduce you to the group, guide you through the activity and help you safely take part in this unique Catalan tradition. When you arrive just approach us as we are really friendly! If in doubt ask for Cuss! Please let us know if you are bringing guests. After the rehearsal we go to a nearby pub for social drinks where everyone is welcome :) What do you need? 1. Ideally a cotton shirt: to protect your neck and shoulders, the more durable the shirt/top the better. We do not recommend any thin items of clothing! 2. Jeans: allowing you to move freely without breaking. 3. Mask: We still require the use of a mask as you will be very close to your fellow Castellers - basically you will be hugging people! The rest of the equipment is on us! We take health and safety very seriously, both in relation to COVID-19 and also the activity- please be assured that the safety of all participants is of the utmost importance to us and we take all necessary precautions to minimize the risk, ensuring we all have a great time! Our regular members won't be filling in the Meet Up to say they are going 🙂 So don't be put off if you see only a handful have said they are going. A minimum of 25 on the day is normal. What the Meet Up may show is how many new people like yourself are going.
"It's Ethical." Says Who?
"It's Ethical." Says Who?
What should guide your choices—your feelings, society’s expectations, God, or something else entirely? In *Who Is the Final Authority in Ethics?*, Ayn Rand takes on a question most people never examine explicitly, yet answer every day through their actions. If you’ve ever felt torn between what you want, what others expect, and what you think is “right,” this discussion will give you a new way to approach that conflict. This session is designed both for long-time readers and for those completely new to Rand. You don’t need any prior background—just a willingness to think seriously about how you make decisions and why. Free In-Person Meeting: Healing from Trauma and Past Betrayals
Free In-Person Meeting: Healing from Trauma and Past Betrayals
This is a free, in person meeting. Burdened by a stressful relationship? Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to “pin the blame” on someone or something. If you don’t find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse. Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well. Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, don’t know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe you’ve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship. Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action? Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships! Break free from self imposed limitations Here we will discuss: • How to “erase” the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isn’t always repeating past mistakes. • Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you? • Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it? • Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love? • Fights & arguments - what's really behind them? • What underlies “corrosive criticism” or the need to invalidate self or others? • How one can stably change one’s outlook on life so they can affect positive change? • Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them? • How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about? • How to enhance one’s own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or one’s career? Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general. Learn where painful experiences are “stored” and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can “erase” those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become “toxic” personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you won’t be tripped up trusting the wrong person. Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life. We look forward to having you join us! This class is sponsored by the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.
CMG Gives Back: Serve Brunch at FAITH MISSION GRANT KITCHEN!
CMG Gives Back: Serve Brunch at FAITH MISSION GRANT KITCHEN!
Join us as we get together to get together to help those in need at this CMG Gives Back event! We have a great little community of Movie Group friends so rather than see a movie this time, we’ll help “create a better world” by helping serve those in need. Here are complete details and our plan for this event: FAITH MISSION – GRANT KITCHEN: The Faith Mission kitchen and dining room serves residents 3 meals a day, every day of the year. For this event, our group will help prepare food, serve meals, assist residents in the dining room, wash dishes, and clean surfaces. PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for BRUNCH from 10:30am to 12:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 10:20am and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. LOCATION: Faith Mission – Grant Kitchen is located at 245 N. Grant Ave. Enter the kitchen at Dock 1 (in the back of the building), indicated in the attached map. On-site parking in the adjacent lot and street parking is available in the surrounding area. Below are some links / attachments with additional info/details: IMPORTANT REMINDER: Our group will be providing all of the volunteers on this day so a firm RSVP count is essential. Please only sign up if you are certain you’ll be able to attend. If something unavoidable comes up, please try to update your RSVP no later than one week prior to the event. With few exceptions, no shows or cancelations within 1 week of the event will not be eligible for future CMG Gives Back events. I appreciate your understanding as we try to ensure the agencies have the volunteers needed to provide the essential services they provide to the vulnerable population they serve. Our Partner Agency for this event is Lutheran Social Services! A huge THANK YOU to all of YOU for volunteering at this (and any of our previous) CMG Gives Back events! Should be another good/fun/meaningful time together, Dan
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/). Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers. For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.
