Trivia at Kook Dogg Cafe (Reston)
We're going back to Kook Dogg Cafe in Reston this Wednesday. It is a restaurant-type atmosphere with a good menu and less noise.
Parking is free (for three hours), but it requires going through a gate. If the machine gives you a ticket, keep it in the car for when you leave. If the machine does NOT give you a ticket, but the gate simply opens, then it will do the same going out... so, no worries.
The game starts at 7 but try to be there by 6:45 to pick categories. Weāll be getting in around 6:30, and anyone is welcome to join. We do tend to leave when the game finishes, but no one else has to.
Team size is limited to 6, so only sign up if you can make it ā and please remember to cancel as soon as possible If something changes.
Look forward to seeing you!
In-Person Buddhist Meditation and Psychology Group
This group is for anyone who wants to explore Buddhist meditation in a relaxed and supportive setting. Each session includes a short meditation, a simple teaching from Buddhist psychology, and an open discussion about how these ideas show up in everyday life. While our foundation is Buddhist practice, we love weaving in wisdom from other traditions whenever it helps us grow, find peace, and support each other. Members of our community come from many different backgrounds, and you do not need to consider yourself a Buddhist to attend. All are welcome.
The session runs from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., with doors open from 6:30 to 9:00. Come early or stay after if youād like to enjoy some quiet reflection or casual conversation with the community.
On the first Wednesday of each month, we share a potluck meal. Bring a dish if youād like, but the most important thing you can bring is yourself. We look forward to seeing you!

Energizing Walk for Busy People!
Join our weekly walking meetup to have fun, maintain a healthy lifestyle, meet new people, and enjoy nature! We meet Saturdays at 10am, by the bike racks and benches 150 feet in front of BUBBLES Hair Salon in Reston, leaving no later than 10:05.
Every week we'll walk the Green Trail to Lake Anne Plaza (\~1 mile), pause there for 5-10 minutes (water, bio, and from April-Nov a Farmer's Market), then circle the lake (2 miles) before returning to our starting point. It's roughly 3.5 miles and takes about an hour and a half.
Afterwards, some members will often head to a local restaurant to refuel and relax before tackling the rest of the day.
This event is open to all ages and fitness levels, and both friends and dogs are always welcome! We recommend dressing for the weather (umbrella, water bottle, snow shoes, hat, etc.) since we'll always walk, rain or shine.
By signing up, you accept and assume all risks and responsibilities with this activity, and nobody will be held liable.
A Common Endeavor: America's Promise and Our Shared Future
America was founded on ideals such as freedom, equality, and justiceābut what does it take to fully realize those ideals today?
In this first discussion, we will explore Section I of *A Common Endeavor: Realizing the Promise of America*. Together, we will reflect on the nation's highest aspirations, the challenges posed by division and polarization, and the role that moral and spiritual principles can play in shaping a more just and united society.
The discussion will consider questions such as:
⢠What is the "promise of America"?
⢠Why do so many people feel discouraged about the current state of society?
⢠What role do values such as trustworthiness, integrity, courage, generosity, and love play in social progress?
⢠How can we move beyond division while honoring our diverse experiences and perspectives?
This gathering is intended to be a space for thoughtful reflection, respectful dialogue, and mutual learning. All viewpoints are welcome.

Mt Kilimanjaro Trek! One of the 7 Summits. Join us on this bucket list adventure
**Our Meetup is off to another hiking adventure! Mt Kilimanjaro, as the tallest mountain in Africa, is included in the 7 Summits of the world.**
**It is a bucket-list item for all hard-core hikers and mountain lovers.**
We did this trek with Meetup in the summer of 2024 and it was a true experience of a lifetime (see photos below)
Let's get to some numbers. It is 5,895m/19,340ft
BUT . . . our starting elevation for the trek is 3795m/12541ft
As such elevation gain is 2100m/6799ft
To compare Everest Base Camp trek, is about 2754m/9035ft elevation change. And Mt Whitney is about 1828m/6000ft elevation change.
The key to being able to succeed in this endeavor lays in the route and the support system.
We are taking the Lemosho Route via the Northern Circuit. The Northern Circuit route is the longest and newest of the seven established Kilimanjaro routes. It's one of the best routes because it has the best acclimatization profile. This results in one of the highest summit success rates. Add to that stunning views, and comparatively relaxed pace. It is also much less crowded than the other Kilimanjaro routes.
As far as our support system: We will be accompanied by experienced guides, porters and cooks. They are certified, ensuring our safety and comfort. Porters will carry our gear.
We will have a high ratio of guides to hikers. Our guides will go our pace and support each and everyone of us, regardless of fitness level and pace. In other words...you go your own speed and we all get there safe.
More about our trek/trip.
As with all our international trips, we picked the best season/time of year to go for weather and wildlife. Lemosho and Northern Circuit is a scenically spectacular and varied route. At the lower elevations it has an abundance of wildlife such as elephant, buffalo, eland and lion which come over to forage during dry season.
**Each of our trips is personally crafted to offer the best places and best use of time.**
*But I don't have the needed gear?!*
You don't need much more than the standard trekker's equipment. We will provide you with a list of what is already included and what can be rented there.
*Does this include food?*
All meals on the trek potion are included and a cook travels with us!
*What is lodging like?*
We are sleeping in new and comfortable tents (carried during the day by porters)
*I am new at this.*
That's OK. We do plenty of prep Zooms before we depart. And in California we have a number of local outdoor day or weekend outings you can test out with us.
*How dangerous is this? What if I get sick or hurt?*
We will be walking on an established, well used trail the entire time. **Our trip INCLUDES emergency insurance.** We are also Certified Wilderness First Responders and our guides are members of (AMREF) Flying Doctor.
**Plain and simple, safety is our primary goal.**
*How much does this cost?*
**Kilimanjaro Mountain Trek $3950 per person, double occupancy. Land only (airfare not included). Solo supplement $600**
Trip Cost includes:
\- 9 nights accommodation
\- 3 meals everyday on the trek
\- All Fees & Entrances and Taxes

**Where do I register?**
To better serve our growing community, weāre transitioning our event registrations to Luma!
**We still love Meetup**
Meetup has been an incredible platform for us to build and connect with our community. Weāll continue sharing upcoming events there so that new people can find us, but Luma will be our primary registration platform moving forward.
**Why we're making the switch**
Meetupās registration system has some limitations, and we need more flexibility to manage sign-ups and engagement.

BreadBreakers Community Dinner: Special 250th Anniversary Edition
**In a time of division and isolation, come be part of the community that's rebuilding the town square, one table at a time.**
**This dinner in particular will be very special as we celebrate America's 250th birthday. How better to honor a semiquincentennial of democracy that spending an evening practicing it?**
In BreadBreakers, we use the common space of the dining table to have conversations where neighbors can **hear, be heard, and know one another.** If you're hungry for good conversation and deeper community, join us for a Community Dinner in Reston and help blaze the trail to a healthier, more connected society and democracy.
Hereās how it works: For just two hours, multiple tables of people set aside the need to "win" and instead focus on sharing, listening, and connecting. Guided by experienced table hosts, we'll tell our stories, try to understand each other, and practice being in community with those with different views or backgrounds.
**At this dinner, participants will get to choose between three different topics, including some current events.** Topics range from the political, to the "slice of life", to the spiritual, to the philosophical, to the off-the-wall - but no matter which table you choose to sit at, you can be sure it'll be like no dinner conversation you've had before! You can also **suggest a topic** by emailing us at BreadBreakersInfo@gmail.com.
Food will be provided for free. For those who wish to provide a donation to help fund BreadBreakers, you can [give here](https://pushpay.com/g/restorationrestonumc?fnd=pO6G-N7oO7FH7Mp1u-x6mA&fndv=Lock&r=No&lang=en&src=pcgl) or at the event.
We'll have vegetarian and gluten-free options available. If you have any additional dietary restrictions (Celiac Disease, vegan, etc.) please let us know at BreadBreakersInfo@gmail.com so that we can implement the appropriate food handling procedures.
**Join us, invite a friend, and be a part of the movement to mend our fractured society and normalize a better way of talking with one another.**
BreadBreakers, an initiative by [Restoration United Methodist Church](https://restorationreston.org/breadbreakers) in Reston, VA, is a religiously inclusive community. We are a collaboration between people of all faiths and stripes. Our leadership, volunteer team, and community include people who attend Restoration and people who don't.
