Smith is often portrayed as the philosopher of selfishness and free markets. But was he really? In fact, Smith was first and foremost a moral philosopher, deeply interested in sympathy, human motivation, and how people cooperate in society. Drawing on close observation of human behaviour, his work offers a far richer view of self-interest than the stereotype suggests. In this talk, Sean O’Connor will introduce Smith’s ideas and explores what they reveal about morality, self-interest, and human cooperation today. The Dissident Salon is a weekly poetry and performance series created as an extension of the DISSIDENT Club’s mission to provide a home for dissenting voices, hosted by Alissa Leeds. Rooted in the tradition of the literary salon, it treats writing and performance as public acts that question power and challenge the systems that shape our lives. Each week features a curated performer, followed by open mic sessions open to all. Work may be presented in English, French, or other languages. Multilingual expression is central to the space and reflects the realities of exile, displacement, and exchange that define the DISSIDENT Club. The Salon is an ongoing forum for people who speak publicly and think critically through art. Grandir entre plusieurs cultures, plusieurs langues, plusieurs mondes peut être une richesse immense. Mais cela peut aussi être un chemin intérieur complexe. Beaucoup d’enfants d’immigrés portent en eux des histoires de sacrifices, d’exil, d’attentes familiales et de loyauté invisible. Dans ce contexte, choisir sa propre voie peut parfois s’accompagner d’un sentiment profond de culpabilité. Choisir sa vie. Choisir ses rêves. Choisir une direction différente. Ou simplement se choisir soi-même. Et pourtant, ce choix peut parfois nous donner l’impression de trahir, de décevoir ou de s’éloigner de ceux qui ont tout donné pour nous. Racines Croisées est un cercle de parole bienveillant, pensé comme un espace sûr pour partager, écouter et réfléchir ensemble autour de ces expériences souvent invisibles. 🌱 Pour cette première rencontre, nous explorerons le thème : « La culpabilité de se choisir » À travers des échanges libres et respectueux, nous pourrons aborder des questions comme : Pourquoi se choisir peut parfois nous faire sentir égoïste ? We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for BRUNCH from 10:30am to 12:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 10:20am and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. LOCATION: Faith Mission – Grant Kitchen is located at 245 N. Grant Ave. Enter the kitchen at Dock 1 (in the back of the building), indicated in the attached map. On-site parking in the adjacent lot and street parking is available in the surrounding area. Please only sign up if you are certain you’ll be able to attend. If something unavoidable comes up, please try to update your RSVP no later than one week prior to the event. With few exceptions, no shows or cancelations within 1 week of the event will not be eligible for future CMG Gives Back events. I appreciate your understanding as we try to ensure the agencies have the volunteers needed to provide the essential services they provide to the vulnerable population they serve.
