Day trip by train - visit historic Hertford!
Come along on Saturday 18th April to visit the historic town of Hertford!
**About Hertford**
Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire. Its only 20 miles north of central London and only has a population of 30,000.
The town grew up on a ford on the River Lea in 913AD where the Rivers Rib, Beane and Mimram join the Lea. Its name comes from the Old English word '*Herut*', meaning a fully mature stag; thus the meaning of the name is a ford where stags are found.
The town has a castle (now just a gatehouse remaining) built by the Normans in the 11th century.
In 1563, Parliament met at the castle because of an outbreak of plague in London.
Its most famous resident was Samuel Stone, who was born here in 1602 and later emigrated to America. He was instrumental in developing the community he settled in into a city, renaming it Hartford (in the state of Connecticut today), after his birthplace.
From the 18th century onwards, the town prospered as a market town, with many warehouses and trade on the river.
The town has lots of medieval, Georgian and Victorian properties, along with a local museum.

KENSINGTON in the 60's....Guided walking tour with Barrie
Another fantastic walk by our member Barrie,
KENSINGTON - When The Swinging Sixties Moved West
===
Lennon's secret lover, the magic of Hendrix and the Biba story
Kensington today is a shadow of its former self, once a major shopping district. But back in the day it was very much part of the swinging sixties and this walk, transports you back to those magical years when the world flocked to the clubs and boutiques of the area and the Royal borough of Kensington and Chelsea really lived up to its name.
Barrie has many personal memories and stories to tell you about those years as well as the interesting history that is all around you as you walk.
For example : The first time The Jimi Hendrix Experience ever played on stage together was in Kensington.....but where?
The most famous boutique the world has ever known, began and ended its short life in Kensington.....but where?
John Lennon had a secret crush on a famous local resident and he visited her in Kensington.........but where?
All of this and much, much more.
Our walk which lasts a bit more than two hours costs £14, cash payable on the day, will be illustrated by historical photographs and music of the time.

NEW: The Backstreets of Islington - tour with Blue Badge guide Laurence Summers
Image by Garry Knight (Creative Commons)
Meet Angel Underground Station 11-11.10
Fee £15
**Pay on the day and RSVP me please by email - on this page - or text**
Low lives, salvation seekers and an array of just about everything in between is dotted along this walk littered with varying architecture and a neighbourhood which, though largely gentrified, still retains an edge.
The high street was a path for coach and horses in the days Smithfield was a bustling livestock market and the area was abuzz with theatre and music hall having played host to Charlie Chaplin, Gracie Fields and .....the Sex Pistols!
Chuck in a world famous canal, the obligatory stunning church and maverick playwright Joe Orton and you have a walk that has no theme yet just about every theme...........................

**👣 GROUP PACE & PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES**
This is a friendly, social hike where we walk together and enjoy the experience as a group.
Please stay with the group rather than hiking ahead independently, as the aim is to connect and share the journey.
Participants should choose events suited to their fitness level and be able to maintain the advertised pace. The overall pace will not be adjusted for individuals.
A back marker may not always be present, so please keep others in sight and remain within a reasonable distance of the group.
To help keep the group together: Faster walkers should wait at junctions. If someone ahead is moving significantly slower, feel free to pass and stay with the main group. Organisers may pause at suitable points to regroup
While we make reasonable efforts to keep everyone together, it is not practical or safe to stop frequently for individuals who are unable to maintain the pace. In such cases, participants may need to continue at their own pace.
If you choose to move ahead of the group or leave the group structure, you will be considered to be continuing independently and responsible for your own route and safety. If you do so without informing an organiser, it will be assumed that you are managing independently.
By attending, you agree to follow these guidelines.
**\-\-\-**
**EXIT POINTS**
Taxis can be arranged from Perry Green and Much Hadham
**\-\-\-**
**CONTACT**
📞 For pre-event questions, please message the event host via Meetup. On the day of the walk, if required, you may contact [AdrianB](https://www.meetup.com/members/287692462/) via WhatsApp on +44 (0) 7438 812 663.

Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations.
If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!).
**HOW IT WORKS**
**Step 1: Bring a topic**
Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event.
**Step 2: Circle up & share**
We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds.
**Step 3: Walk, talk & float**
We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!"
**Step 4: Feel more alive**
Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times.
*For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)*
**HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC**
A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about.
Recent topics include:
* "What are you passionate about right now?"
* "What makes a good friend?"
* "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?"
* "How do you want to be remembered?"
* "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?"
Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter.
**WHAT TO EXPECT**
This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.*
But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here.
**FAQ**
* Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk!
* We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space.
* We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space.
* Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know.
* Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome — please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic!
**LOGISTICS**
* If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event.
* This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs.
* Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details.
* If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. 🤠👋
**IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEPER...**
