Community Assembly - AI & Data Centres
Artificial intelligence and data centres are reshaping how we live, work, and use energy. Right now, the Federal Government is asking for input to influence how this important technology shapes our future.
This is a real opportunity for community voices to reach the people making decisions about our collective future. The problem is that formal consultation processes can feel inaccessible; full of technical jargon, unclear on process, and easy to scroll past.
That's exactly why we're running this community assembly.
Rather than feeling overwhelmed or just venting into the void, come and do something about it. This is a free, volunteer-run, in-person session designed to give you:
* Context — a plain-English overview of the inquiry and what's at stake for our communities, environment, and economy
* Space — a safe, welcoming environment for open discussion, whatever your background or level of expertise
* Support — practical guidance to help you formulate and submit your own perspective directly to the inquiry.
No technical expertise required. Just curiosity and a willingness to have your say.
We believe that diverse perspectives lead to richer outcomes, and on something as consequential as AI and data centres, we need as many of them as possible! Come and help shape a future we can all look forward to.

Philosopher's Walk - Royal Botanic Gardens
Weather looks reasonable on Sunday. Participants are invited to join us for a walk and talk about science, philosophy, AI and emerging technology.
**Schedule**
* **10.30** am – Meet outside the entrance to the Royal Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre (near the Observatory House, and a walk away from the Shrine of Remembrance)
* **11.00** am – Venture into the gardens and walk the outer path anticlockwise, spiralling inwards towards the lake
* \~1.00 pm – (optional) Lunch by the lake, (BYO or there are Terrace Café options)
**Getting there:** If coming by **tram**, get off at Stop 19 - Shrine of Remembrance/St Kilda Rd
**Parking** is free on Anderson St far side of the Botanic Gardens ([near eastern gate B and Tecoma gate C](https://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/melbourne-gardens/interactive-map/)) subject to time limits in some stretches (mostly 3 hrs) - which is the only free parking area near the gardens that I can find. Check signage on the day. See this [PDF for more detail](https://athsvic.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/The-Tan-Parking-Map.pdf).
**Possible discussion topics**
* Latest AI models - Anthropic's Mythos and Fable blocked after US bans foreign use
* AI Pause / Stop - will it work? (Regulatory catch-up, xrisk, global-coordination & geopolitical arms races, enforcement & logistics, existing capability overhang)
* Technical AI safety - Mechanistic interpretability, linear probes, RLHF, behavioural evals
* General AI alignment approaches: control vs motivation:
\- control \(External Constraints\) focuses on building walls *around* the AI to restrict what it can do, trip wires etc.
\- motivation \(Internal Alignment\) focuses on changing the AI’s inner desires so it *wants* to be ethical/help humans/act in accordance with the well-being of all sentience
* AI ethics: how is it related to AI safety? What should be the target for AI alignment? Should the target be aggregate human preferences, religious doctrine, moral naturalism or something else?
* Metaethics and ethics
* Moral realism: a stance-independent moral ontology, useful for capturing non-arbitrary moral choice
* Moral anti-realism: error theory, non-cognitivism, moral relativism etc
* Can AI be fault-tolerantly aligned to moral realism or anti-realism?
* Is sentience required for moral reasoning or moral deliberation? Can it be a hindrance?
* Moral progress and indirect normativity
* AI safety, automated persuasion, the orthogonality thesis
* How epistemics (including science) makes progress
* Health, wellness, and how to live a good life
* Latest trends in AI: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude
* Economic impacts of AGI, automation, and unbounded inequality
* UBI and universal wealth redistribution
* The likelihood of future doom or utopia
* Human augmentation and hacking human potential
* Plato's cave
* Fun theory and value theory

Philosophy discussions can feel quite sedentary - hence our experiment in cross-pollinating exercise with engaging discussion. Exerting mind and body together may produce a fascinating dynamic. A sedentary lifestyle (and, by association, philosophy) has been linked to depression, anxiety and chronic stress.
Ease the anxieties of the armchair philosopher engaging in mental gymnastics with minimal muscle movement - join our raggle-taggle crew of aspiring philosophers walking the talk. Healthy body, healthy mind.
Bring elemental protection (umbrellas, sunscreen, etc).
Garden Walk and Picnic Gathering
An opportunity to meet and walk in the Botanic Gardens before sharing a picnic. This is an event for those who loves plants and trees, literature, art, environmental history - the organisers are Michael, a landscape architect and heritage consultant with a vast knowledge of local plants and trees, and Lana, a visual artist and musician. We welcome neurodiverse minds, introverts, newcomers, plant lovers, those who care for insects and animals and growing things, who want to re-connect with the natural world as well as make likeminded friends and build a sense of community.
We will meet at the Observatory Café, get coffee if we want to, walk in the Gardens and talk about the plants and trees, and then share a picnic. Don’t stress if you can’t bring anything for the picnic, as we will supply food.

Sunday Meditation | Community Building | Connection | Meet New People
**Who We are..... 🤝**
Our journey to bring people together began in January of 2022. The group was started with a simple intention to gather and meet some likeminded people - connecting through the powerful act of meditation and sharing our genuine selves while sitting in a circle that represents equality, harmony and wholeness( *we believe everyone in the circle is a teacher and a student at the same time)*.
And over the last 4 years of consistently coming together, we have fostered a beautiful, loving, dependable community where members from all walks of life have experienced a sacred space to sit in silence together and meditate, share their authentic selves, give presence to others and forge meaningful and long lasting connections.
The Meditations are guided by Sana(co-founder and host), who is a Trained and certified meditation teacher by the Meditation Association of Australia, and has been guiding meditations for 3+ years in corporate and community settings.
✨ **Do you wish to....**
* Experience a simple yet powerful meditation and breathing practice to find calm, relaxation and clarity

Shades of Courage
🌿 **Take a gentle pause this June as we connect, reflect and explore *Shades of Courage*.**
SoulTime offers a welcoming space for **reflection, meaningful conversation and connection** in a peaceful setting overlooking nature. Sessions include gentle music, short readings from diverse cultures, faiths and perspectives, and open discussion around uplifting themes relevant to everyday life.
This month, **we'll explore the many different ways courage manifests in our lives** \- from bold leaps of faith to quiet moments of inner strength\.
🌱 To help make SoulTime accessible for families, we are continuing our ***SoulTime Kids*** program! This is a parallel session for primary-aged children that runs while adults attend the main gathering, often exploring similar themes through their own creative, reflective and values-based activities. The kids' session is facilitated by a qualified primary school teacher or youth worker (with current Working with Children Checks).
SoulTime remains open to everyone, regardless of background, beliefs or life stage.
Light refreshments will be served following the group discussion.
We hope you can join us! ☕✨

*Looking to meet new people, explore nature, and have a good laugh along the way?*
This is your perfect Sunday plan! 🎉
We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Melbourne Social Hike. A welcoming day out where the focus is all about fun, friendships and fresh air. Whether you come solo or bring a mate, you’ll leave with new connections and memories!
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
**🚙 Carpooling Makes It Happen**
At Social Hikes Australia, carpooling is a big part of what makes our hikes possible. Every extra seat means another person gets to join. Fewer cars, easier logistics, and a more social, fun start to the day.
Carpooling is also a great way to meet people before the hike even begins, share a few laughs, get to know each other, and arrive together. It’s simple, social, and one of the best parts of the experience 🌿
💡 Carpool tickets are offered at a discounted price to encourage drivers to offer seats and make the hikes accessible for everyone.
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
👉 **For Drivers**
If you’ve got spare seats, offering a lift makes a big difference. It helps others join, reduces parking stress and makes the ride more enjoyable from the start.
👉 **For Passengers**
Passengers are to contact drivers directly using the details provided in the carpool sheet (linked at the top of the description). The sheet shows information from carpooler tickets (Drivers Offering Seats).
✨ **Best practice:** Try to organise your ride before purchasing a ticket to avoid last-minute stress.
**Please note:** Drivers and passengers should stick to the arrangements they make. We do not recommend swapping drivers or cars after you’ve agreed on a ride. If you do decide to change, please make sure all parties are clearly informed and agree to avoid confusion.
If a driver forgets, gets mixed up, or doesn’t pick you up, Social Hikes Australia (and your driver) are **not liable** for any inconvenience caused. For this reason, it is best to keep things simple with the driver you first arranged with.
⚠️ **Important Notes**
* Please stick with the carpool arrangement you agree on.
* Avoid swapping drivers unless everyone is clearly informed and agrees.
* Petrol, parking, and other costs are not included in the ticket price. These should be agreed upon directly between the driver and passengers.
* Social Hikes Australia is not responsible for any issues with private carpool arrangements.
📍 **Pick-Up Info**
Drivers will share their preferred pick-up locations, such as major CBD train stations like Parliament, Richmond, South Yarra, Southern Cross, or North Melbourne.
For this hike, **the nearest station to the trail is** [Waurn Ponds](https://maps.app.goo.gl/Dn7e4WuXs5bSUSCA6 "https://maps.app.goo.gl/Dn7e4WuXs5bSUSCA6"), though drivers choose whichever spot is most convenient for them. Passengers can then join from those locations.

Magic Mind & Peak Consciousness: Cultivating Psychic Abilities - Dr Alex de Foe
**What if psychical abilities (psi) can be cultivated in earlier life?**
What are the implications for modern society and our perception of the world? A new theory based on entropy and perception may hold the answers...
After 70+ years of controlled studies into psychical phenomena, scholars still lack a cohesive theory of what makes them possible....
**In this presentation, Dr Alex De Foe** draws on his 15+ years of research to model psi as an emergent lifespan experience - understanding it in relation to neural development and entropy, experiences often reported by children. Drawing upon the "free energy model" in perception and social neuroscience, Alex will make the case for cultivation of psi in pivotal states of consciousness.
Part 2 will focus on experiential analysis to support the argument, including case studies and a short practice task called 'Image Streaming' that engages aspects of the mind at the periphery of experience.
**Image Streaming** is a technique that bridges the divide between the conscious, unconscious, and super-conscious mind, related to Michael Thalbourne's concept of 'transliminality', in which material flows between these dimensions of mind seamlessly.
**Case studies will be presented from:**
* Research into out-of-body experiences (OBEs) and lucid dreams
* A new theory on archetypes and the collective unconscious
* Speculative accounts at the bridge between spiritual emergence and spiritual 'emergency'
**About Dr. Alexander De Foe (PhD, M Couns):**
* Academic at Monash University (2021-2026).
* Runs a research program on mindfulness/consciousness
* At RMIT University (2016-2021), he managed a virtual reality lab focusing on embodied cognition and social neuroscience.
* Published over 30 peer-reviewed studies/papers on consciousness, perception, and general psychology.
* Chair of the Australian Centre for Consciousness Studies
* Committee Member of the Australian Institute of Parapsychological Research
* Associate Editor at the Anthropology of Consciousness Journal.
**Post-Event Social Lunch Hangout (12.45 - 1.45pm)**
NOTE: TRYING OUT NEW LUNCH VENUE...
Afterwards, you are invited to lunch with everyone at **Gopal's Restaurant** (5min walk from the venue)
**PLEASE NOTE:**
* **11AM Start -** Please be considerate and arrive early.

FAITH MISSION – GRANT KITCHEN: The Faith Mission kitchen and dining room serves residents 3 meals a day, every day of the year. For this event, our group will help prepare food, serve meals, assist residents in the dining room, wash dishes, and clean surfaces.
PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for DINNER from 4:30 to 6:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 4:20pm and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
LOCATION: Faith Mission – Grant Kitchen is located at 245 N. Grant Ave. Enter the kitchen at Dock 1 (in the back of the building), indicated in the attached map. On-site parking in the adjacent lot and street parking are available in the surrounding area. Below are some links / attachments with additional info/details:
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Our group will be providing all of the volunteers on this day so a firm RSVP count is essential. Please only sign up if you are certain you’ll be able to attend. If something unavoidable comes up, please try to update your RSVP no later than one week prior to the event. With few exceptions, no shows or cancelations within 1 week of the event will not be eligible for future CMG Gives Back events. I appreciate your understanding as we try to ensure the agencies have the volunteers needed to provide the essential services they provide to the vulnerable population they serve. Our Partner Agency for this event is Lutheran Social Services! A huge THANK YOU to those volunteering at this (or any of our previous or future) CMG Gives Back events!
Look forward to seeing you there, Dan
Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code - Alan Barber

The building address is 4450 Bridge Park
The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400
You will need to scan your ID at the door to get a visitor badge.
**Abstract**
*Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code*
Visual Studio Code is one of the most widely used development environments today, and much of its flexibility comes from its extension ecosystem. Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs.
In this session, we’ll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. We’ll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling.
The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. We’ll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options.

Volunteer Opportunity
Open Shelter has teamed up again with Red White and Boom! Friday, July 3rd & we are looking for volunteers to run the event’s alcohol booths. Proceeds from sales go to the Open Shelter’s organization.
There are two available shifts: 12-6p & 5-11p.
There will be an ipad-like device to process transactions in addition to cash. Everything will be in bottles or cans, so transactions should be very easy. Must be 21+.
There are multiple beverage stations along the Civic Center Bridge. The stations are covered and also have beverage trucks next to them, so volunteers can cool off in the trucks.
As far as parking, it is suggested those who are coming from the east use the Columbus Commons Garage, and those from the west use the Belle Street Garage.
Harry from the Open Shelter will be your contact.
