The Imposing complex of Government Buildings on Upper Merrion Street was the last major public building the British constructed in Ireland. It was intended as accommodation for the Royal College of Science. Fortuitously, it was completed by 1922. When Independance dawned, the New Free State Government moved in. Former Taoiseach Charlie Haughy converted and entirely refurbished the building to form state-of-the-art accommodation for a number of departments including the Department of the Taoiseach, the Department of Finance and the Office of the Attorney General. Tours of Government Buildings may be cancelled at short notice if they have visiting dignitaries etc. Tickets may be obtained from the National Gallery at the onsite coffee shop where the guide sets up a small table. Tickets are free but on a first come first served basis. We need to be there for 9.30am to ensure a ticket. Once we have our tickets, the guide will accompany us to Government Buildings.

There is a lift for those with mobility issues but please check with staff if it's working. A huge building by pre-Georgian standards, it is the earliest surviving great house in Ireland from the period around 1600 when the arrival of design ideas from Renaissance Europe began to transform the character of elite domestic architecture on the island.
