This year, Backstory is launching a **five-month Book Club series dedicated to Mercè Rodoreda**, one of the most renowned Catalan writers of the 20th century. The series runs from January to May, in parallel with the CCCB exhibition *Rodoreda, a forest*, and is designed to introduce English-speaking readers to Rodoreda’s work through its translations. Across five monthly sessions, we will read five key works by Rodoreda, guided by **translators and scholars who have played a central role in bringing her writing into English**. Each session combines close reading, contextual discussion, and open conversation, always in an accessible, non-academic format. Beneath its calm surface, Rodoreda builds a deeply ironic and poignant portrait of human relationships and the passage of time. Often described as one of Rodoreda’s most accessible works, *Garden by the Sea* offers an ideal entry point into her literary universe, revealing her mastery of voice, atmosphere, and emotional restraint. ### 👤 Guest: **Rebecca Simpson** **Rebecca Simpson** is a translator based in Barcelona. Her translations of poems by Mercè Rodoreda (1908–1983) appear in *Shearsman Magazine*, *Modern Poetry in Translation*, *AGNI Magazine* and *New England Review*. Other recent translation projects concern the poetry of Mireia Calafell (1980) and Blai Bonet (1926–1997). Support from the **Institut Ramon Llull (Generalitat de Catalunya)** has helped make this work possible. As a writer, Rebecca is the originator and author of various opera libretti, including *Juana*, with music by composer Enric Palomar (Oper Halle, Germany, and Teatre Romea, Barcelona, 2005), and *Sky Disc*, with music by composer Ramon Humet (Oper Halle, 2013).

El Rol en Viu consisteix a afegir-li una acció més teatral i dramàtica a aquests enfrontaments. Si t'interessa aprendre a combatre, emular les lluites de les teves pel·lícules favorites, lluitar amb espasa, subjectar un escut, dominar els secrets de l'equilibri de peus o fer fitnes d'un mode diferent; el Softcombat i el Rol en Viu són una activitat que has de provar. **És durant el matí de 11h a 13.30h quan major quantitat de participants es reuneixen. A la tarda, es queda(a vegades) un petit grup, però no es pot garantir la seva presència fins a les 18h, sobretot a l'hivern. Recomanem anar de demà.** *** **REGLES BÀSIQUES PER AL SOFTCOMBAT** **NORMATIVA I SEGURETAT** **la participació en un esdeveniment implica l'acceptació d'aquestes:** Per a garantir la seguretat dels participants, totes les armes alienes a seran testades prèviament, conservant-se el dret a admissió de l'arma o de l'usuari. Com tot esport de contacte, cal anar amb compte i apel·lar sempre al sentit comú i a la companyonia, en inscriure's en la nostra comunitat, el participant o tutors del participant accepten la total responsabilitat de qualsevol mal, lesió, pèrdua... que pugui succeir dins dels entrenaments. **La participació en un esdeveniment implica l'acceptació d'aquestes.** 1. No estan permesos cops **ni al cap ni en els genitals.** 2. **La/s ma/ns** que subjecten l'arma fins a la nina no són blanc vàlid. 3. **No es pot estocar,** només colpejar amb el lateral de l'arma. 4. **Abans de començar** qualsevol enfrontament, cal estendre les armes, procedir a una lleugera salutació mitjançant el xoc entre aquestes. 5. **Cuida del company** amb el qual entrenes. Vigila la seva esquena i advertir-li de forats, arbres, altres persones o altres irregularitats en el terreny. 6. **Abans d'emprar qualsevol propietat aliena**, demana permís al seu propietari. Si algú trenca l'equip d'una altra persona, el propietari pot reclamar una compensació econòmica pels materials. 7. Els **menors de 14 anys** hauran d'anar acompanyats d'un adult responsable. Els menors de 16 anys hauran de portar un document emès per un tutor responsable, eximint de responsabilitat als Organitzadors (o confirmar meetup conforme l'acceptació d'aquestes normes). 8. **L'Organització no es farà responsable** de cap mena de lesió, mal o ferida que pugui succeir durant els entrenaments. 9. Diverteix-te i gaudeix, és un gran esport. 10. **L'organització es reserva el dret a vetar** la participació als qui consideri, sense haver de donar explicacions. Sobretot davant persones que hagin demostrat de manera present o passada un comportament deshonest, vexatori o frau davant l'entitat, els seus membres o equip de direcció. 11. We will be playing Daggerheart, a new Fantasy RPG by Critical Role, using a world called Beast Feast: A bit absurd, certainly comedic, sometimes creepy, but always fun and silly. You will be playing with three to four other players at one table, the assignment happens during the event. We start each adventure with a short introduction, where you learn about the basics and pick your pre-made character. Afterwards we dive into a unique experience, explaining the rules and concepts while actually playing the game. At the end, we have time to talk and find connections as well as hear your thoughts and questions. All games are in English. The cost of participation is **8 Euro**, which you will pay at the entrance. Never played RPGs and always wanted to try? A powerful lure drew all the dangerous creatures in your forest down into caves beneath. Your community lived a simple life of peace for generations, only taking what you needed and leaving the lush but dangerous undergrounds to the monsters. But recently, the lure seems to have lost its allure. Monster sightings have grown and just last night, there was even an attack on your mayor, Doug Dougle! He survived but it was a shock for your community. You and your friends decide to tackle the problem yourselves. You arm yourself with a rolling pin, a fishing rod or whatever other odd tool you find. Packing only the essentials, you head out and turn west, to the well-known but shunned entrance to the legendary endless caves. What dangers and wonders will you encounter? What happened to the lure? And what will you eat on your journey? **TONE:** The tone of the setting and adventures will be absurd, comedic and lighthearted. Still, fighting somewhat creepy monsters will be part of the experience.
