2 Free Exhibitions focusing on New York and the American West followed by tea.
2 Free Exhibitions focusing on New York and the American West followed by tea.
First, we will visit the American West, an exhibition featuring the work of Richard Avedon. These images, which picture the heart and soul of hardscrabble, working-class America, represented a significant new development in his work. Avedon spent five years, from 1979 to 1984, travelling to twenty-one US states. He conducted more than a thousand sittings, finally producing 126 editioned images, 21 of which are on view at this exhibition. From this exhibition, we shall take a short walk to the next gallery for another exhibition with an American theme. New York - all seasons & Summer Still Lifes : Garner took his first US pictures in October 1973 in Richmond, Virginia. In 1976, he made his first pictures in Miami, then in 1977 in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. This exhibition is a selection of colour images made between 2000 and 2018 in New York. At the same time, we will view a small collection of his Summer Still Life collection, taken in the south of France in the summers of 1983 and 1984. Please note that these free exhibitions at commercial galleries are not large but are always very well curated and presented. We should expect to spend around 30 to 40 minutes at each. If we finish early, there are numerous galleries in the area, and we can pick another one or two to visit depending on timings. I already have a note of what's on. After this exhibitions, the meetup ends, but it would be great if most if not all of us, stay for an entirely optional tea, drink, or snack in one of the many establishments in the area. This will offer a great opportunity to relax and chat socially after what should be an interesting afternoon. Depending on numbers, this can possibly be Sotheby's, which is not expensive for tea and cake or another establishment. The exhibitions are free, but the usual £1.50 group maintenance fee applies and is non refundable. Please note that Meetup now adds about £0.60 to this as well. (If you pay cash on the day, it’s £2.50). As always, you are participating at your own risk. We would appreciate it if you changed your RSVP no more than 2 days before the event should you find you can no longer attend. No shows or cancellations on the day may result in you being removed from the group.

RUSH MATTING
RUSH MATTING
**Bookable via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/rush-matting-17/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/rush-matting-17/) **⋆⋆⋆** John Page will teach the endangered craft of rush-plaited matting. Rush matting has been used as the flooring of choice by grand houses and great cathedrals in the past. Now it is practised by few and produced by even fewer. Here is a chance to make a small mat using the traditional techniques. **FAQs** **How can I hope to learn anything about such a complex craft?** John will prepare the long lengths of rush by damping them beforehand so they are soft and pliable. He will help each learner produce a finished mat to take home. Depending on people’s speed and desire, The finished item could be an elegant centre-piece for a table or a small mat for the floor. This method is a technique that can be enlarged to become a mat that has warmth and durability. We offer a list of suppliers to help you continue practicing at home. **Any dangers?** The rushes are soft and flexible and when wet, the studio smells like a riverwalk. The tools include big needles and scissors but most of the work is done with only hands. **What do I need to bring?** We supply everything for this course. The rushes are pre-soaked. Most of the tools are simple and easily available from hardware stores if you wish to continue your new hobby at home. A couple of special tools can be handcrafted or bought from suppliers listed in the notes. **About Jon Page** Tutor John Page began his basketmaking career with a City & Guilds course in creative basketry, having been greatly impressed by the Crafts Council’s Contemporary International Basketry exhibition. He is a yeoman member of the Basketmakers Livery Company and repairs harps. John also teaches how to make Rush and Willow baskets at The Goodlife Centre.

Welcome, readers! Our February read is **_1984 by George Orwell._** In 1984, George Orwell imagines a world where the government watches everyone, rewrites reality, and punishes even private thoughts. Winston Smith dares to question this system, believing that truth and love might still exist. His rebellion draws him into a chilling struggle against a power that knows him better than he knows himself. The novel leaves readers asking whether freedom is possible when reality itself can be controlled. Looking forward to discussing with everyone! We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **drinks must be purchased at the bar.** Happy reading! 📖
Bad Girls Book Club February 2026
Bad Girls Book Club February 2026
**Our February novel is: Julia by Sandra Newman** **This month is a classic, dystopian, fiction, literary fiction, women’s fiction, and science fiction novel. The book is 394 pages in print and 14 hours and 20 minutes on audiobook.** **An imaginative, feminist, and brilliantly relevant-to-today retelling of Orwell’s 1984, from the point of view of Winston Smith’s lover, Julia, by critically acclaimed novelist Sandra Newman.** Julia Worthing is a mechanic, working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. It’s 1984, and Britain (now called Airstrip One) has long been absorbed into the larger trans-Atlantic nation of Oceania. Oceania has been at war for as long as anyone can remember, and is ruled by an ultra-totalitarian Party, whose leader is a quasi-mythical figure called Big Brother. In short, everything about this world is as it is in Orwell’s 1984. All her life, Julia has known only Oceania, and, until she meets Winston Smith, she has never imagined anything else. She is an ideal citizen: cheerfully cynical, always ready with a bribe, piously repeating every political slogan while believing in nothing. She routinely breaks the rules, but also collaborates with the regime when necessary. Everyone likes Julia. Then one day she finds herself walking toward Winston Smith in a corridor and impulsively slips him a note, setting in motion the devastating, unforgettable events of the classic story. Julia takes us on a surprising journey through Orwell’s now-iconic dystopia, with twists that reveal unexpected sides not only to Julia, but to other familiar figures in the 1984 universe. This unique perspective lays bare our own world in haunting and provocative ways, just as the original did almost seventy-five years ago.
