Code Names is the game of choice for the next few meetings. We open at 6:30 so that newcomers can have time for a tutorial; the first game starts promptly at 7 pm. It ends when the group agrees—typically around 9—there’s no definite end time. If you log-in late, you can always cheer the players on and still be able to play in the second game of the night. Let's try something new. For the next dozen weeks or so, starting 4/17/2022, we are going to live-read and discuss Aristotle's \~*Nicomachean Ethics*\~. What is new and different about this project is that the translation, by Adam Beresford (2020), happens to be rendered in standard 'Murican English. . From the translator's "Note" on the text: . "This translation is conservative in interpretation and traditional in aim. It aims to translate the text as accurately as possible. . "I translated every page from scratch, from a clean Greek text, rather than revising an existing translation. ... I wanted to avoid the scholars’ dialect that is traditionally used for translating Aristotle. ... "I reject the approach of Arthur Adkins, Elizabeth Anscombe, and others who followed Nietzsche in supposing that the main elements of modern thinking about right and wrong were unknown to the Greeks, or known to them only in some radically different form. My view of humanity and of our shared moral instincts is shaped by a newer paradigm. This is a post-Darwinian translation. (It is also more in line with the older, both Aristotelian and Christian view of human character.) . "Having said that, I have no interest at all in modernizing Aristotle’s ideas. All the attitudes of this treatise remain fully Greek, very patriarchal, somewhat aristocratic, and firmly embedded in the fourth century BC. My choice of dialect (standard English) has no bearing on that whatsoever. (It is perfectly possible to express distinctively Greek and ancient attitudes in standard English.) ... I have also not simplified the text in any way. I have translated every iota, particle, preposition, noun, verb, adjective, phrase, clause, and sentence of the original. The Documentary film "The Phenomenon Bruno Gröning" -- (On the Tracks of the "Miracle Healer") is now permanently streaming on YouTube! It chronicles the life, work, and teaching of Bruno Gröning. In 1949 the name Bruno Gröning dominated the headlines. Everywhere that he appeared, hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of people flocked to see him. They came from all over the world including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, France, and even the USA. Those who flocked to see him, were sick & injured people. For many it was their last ray of hope. Beaten down by the war, given up on by doctors, they had only one wish, to become healthy again and be free from pain and suffering. Bruno Gröning could help them, and he did! "There is no incurable -- God is the greatest physician!" were his words. Then the unfathomable happened: innumerable people became healthy again! THE DOCUMENTARY FILM: "THE PHENOMENON BRUNO GRöNING" On the Tracks of the "Miracle Healer" The film shows the dramatic events of that time objectively. The film includes original footage and sound, archived material, over 50 eyewitness interviews, and large-scale re-enactment scenes. All of these aspects make the film a deeply impressive experience. This film, however, is more than a documented glimpse into the past. Many viewers have reported that they suddenly felt a power, a tingling, a current running in their bodies while watching the film. Details We are close to our creative source when the child within - the creative unconscious - speaks its mind and ignores any critical or editorial voices. In the morning we will let that "Crazy Child" write. And when the exercise is shared, the workshop as a whole will likely repeat many of your lines and say, "Those images are striking!" or "That scene is full of power!" These are clues for the afternoon's exercise. Or we may go wherever the energy is and write freely and wildly again. This is proprioceptive writing - dealing with the stories contained in our psyches and nervous systems - and it gives texture, flair, and power to all kinds of writing. We are usually surprised by how much writing we do in these workshops, and by its high quality. This is aside from the fun we have, and how the journey satisfies our souls! All workshops are being offered via Zoom. Write on paper with pen or write on a laptop, your writing preference. Fee: $80 sliding scale. Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/). Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes.
