B&B Meeting: Discipline And Punish -- Michel Foucault
B&B Meeting: Discipline And Punish -- Michel Foucault
Everyone, please join us on Monday, June 22 at 7 p.m. to discuss [Discipline And Punish](https://www.amazon.com/Discipline-Punish-Prison-Michel-Foucault-ebook/dp/B007OLYO7I/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0) by [Michel Foucault](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Foucault)\. \| 309pp\. ***Discipline and Punish*** is an analysis of the social and theoretical mechanisms behind the changes that occurred in modern Western penal systems. Foucault argues that prison did not become the principal form of punishment just because of the humanitarian concerns of reformists. He traces the cultural shifts that led to the predominance of prison via discourse on the body and power and by examining the parallel use of discipline in schools, hospitals, and the military. A long list of other books we are considering reading is available [here](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1coctalgTkYrjCFUtZniKSksN6wvALCjH7NvR7M02rMA/edit?usp=sharing). Our meetings have a $3 fee, purely to offset the cost of Meetup. This can be paid via Venmo, Paypal, or in cash. We do not accept requests from authors to read their books. We will never ask for money beyond the above fee. If you receive offers purporting to come from the club they are part of an online scam.

Sewing 101: Small Lined Tote Bag
Sewing 101: Small Lined Tote Bag
New to sewing? Used to sew but forgot how? Then this class is for you! Learn to make a small lined tote bag from cotton fabric. The finished bag will be 12” by 13”. Perfect for carrying a book and your lunch! Things to Bring * Sewing machine * Matching thread * Straight pins * Ruler or measuring tape * Scissors or a rotary cutter and mat * Optional: Iron * ½” yard outer fabric, ½” yard lining fabric, ⅛” yard handle fabric -or- * Three fat quarters \*\*Quilting cotton is recommended for this project\*\* Where to Find Fabric It is harder to find fabric these days, but don’t worry! We got you! Here are some sources for fabrics: * Big Box Stores: Michaels and Walmart both sell fabric. We recommend quilting cotton for this project, which is the most abundant type of fabric you can find. * Thrift Stores: You can use any sort of woven fabric for this project as long as there is no stretch. Be creative! Use old sheets or curtains from the thrift store! Crafting for a Cause (Adult Small Group)
Crafting for a Cause (Adult Small Group)
Some projects are made with yarn. Some are made with prayer. This one is made with both. Join us for Crafting for a Cause as we create Prayer Shawls to offer comfort, encouragement, and care to people in our community. June 28 from 12:15–1:30 PM This isn’t about perfection or experience—it’s about showing up and creating something meaningful together. If you enjoy knitting or crocheting, we’d love to have your hands and talents join us. This is not a class, but patterns, information, and limited materials can be provided if needed. Never made a shawl before? You’re still invited. We’ll also have simple no-sew fleece projects available. And if crafting isn’t your thing—but prayer is—please come anyway. We’ll be praying over the projects, over the people creating them, and over every person who will one day receive one. Bring your supplies if you have them. Bring a friend if you’d like. Bring your prayers either way. If you can pray, you’re welcome. Questions? Contact jennifer@thevineva.org
