Why join?
Add structure to your reading habit.
Discover new books, authors, and ideas through othersā choices.
Build real connections by sharing and listening deeply.

Ditch The Small Talk
**Tired of surface-level conversations?**
Join us for *Ditch the Small Talk*āan evening of deep, real connection with strangers who are down to go there.
Weāll meet in the grass in front of the cathedral, break into small groups, and draw questions from a deck of cards designed to spark vulnerable, honest conversations.
How it works:
Draw a card and ask a question.
Listen. Don't coach or give advice without permission.
Try to ask follow-up questions when people share.
You can spend 1 minute on a question or 1 hour, just go with the flow.
**If you show up late, please don't interrupt the speaker. Just sit down in a group of your choice and they'll bring you up to speed when whoever is talking finishes.
Bring a blanket or chair if you don't want to sit in the grass.
*** Rules***
1. Don't debate politics
2. Keep what is shared in the group within the group
3. If you need to use your phone, step away from your group first

Creative Minds Summit: Storyteller Bag (2-day)
We are happy to welcome Julie B. Booth back as a returning teacher for our annual Creative Minds Summit. During this 2 day workshop you will learn techniques to craft a unique and beautifully beaded bag. Allow stories to unfold while intuitively stitching and beading this uniquely shaped bag (finishes to approximately 10 in. tall and 7 in. wide) based on a late 19th century Sioux buckskin bag. Starting with a sturdy 100% wool felt base, participants will collage with bits of painted cheesecloth, fabric scraps, lace or doilies, yarns, ribbons and tulle. Then the fun ā and stories ā begin with couching, ruching, needle lace (including attaching sea glass in the lace), adding sequins and incorporating beads in your hand stitches to create richly encrusted surfaces.

Meaningful Conversation and Coffee - Northside Social Falls Church
**Join us in Falls Church for conversations that go beyond small talk.**
Higher Grounds ā Falls Church is where this growing network of gatherings began: a space for thoughtful, authentic dialogue about what matters most. Whether weāre exploring the nature of happiness, the challenges and possibilities of midlife, spirituality, culture, capitalism, parenting, or the role of art and travel in a meaningful life, every conversation is shaped by the people in the room.
Thereās no set leader or rigid agendaājust a shared commitment to listen as much as we speak. We start with brief introductions focused on what makes you *you* (not your LinkedIn bio), then dive straight into whatever is on peopleās minds. The direction of each meetup emerges organically, making every event unique.
MANDATORY: PLEASE REVIEW OUR COMMUNITY GUIDELINES IN THE GROUP DESCRIPTION. Everyone is expected to engage in respectful conversations and listen deeply as well as share. We have a zero tolerance policy of sexual harassment and hate speech.
Come ready to share, reflect, and connect with others in Falls Church who are also seeking deeper conversations.

Emotional Honesty & Real Optimism
Emotional Honesty & Real Optimism
This session explores the limits of constant positivity and offers an alternative: emotional honesty paired with real optimism. Inspired by Barbara Ehrenreichās Bright-sided and an NPR Life Kit conversation on āreal optimism,ā weāll examine how our culture often encourages us to look on the bright side too quicklyāand what we might lose when we do. While positivity can be helpful, it can also unintentionally minimize real experiences or shut down deeper understanding.
Together, weāll explore the difference between forced positivity and a more grounded form of optimismāone rooted in resilience, curiosity, and a clear-eyed view of reality. The NPR discussion highlights that real optimism is not about ignoring hardship, but about recognizing it fully and still believing in our ability to move forward. This session creates space to reflect on our own emotional patterns and how we respond to difficulty.
Through individual reflection, partner discussion, and group dialogue, participants will practice naming emotions, understanding their origins, and considering what it means to respond thoughtfully rather than reactively. The goal is not to reject positivity, but to use it more intentionallyāafter weāve acknowledged whatās real.
As always, come as you are.
Bring your curiosity.
Leave with insight, connection, and steadiness.

# Background ā Writing & Reinvention Journey
Writing has been one of the most powerful tools in my own reinvention journey.
What began as reflections during a difficult life transition gradually evolved into published books and a growing body of work focused on reinvention, personal growth, and life transitions.
My goal is not just to write books ā but to help others realize that their experiences may also hold stories worth sharing.

āGood Jobā: A Conversation on Seeing, Valuing, and Uplifting One Another
Inspired by the song "Good Job" by Alicia Keys, this gathering invites us to pause and reflect on the quiet strength, resilience, and everyday efforts that often go unseen.
How often do we acknowledge the people who keep things movingāat work, at home, in our communities? And how often do we recognize that same perseverance in ourselves?
In this conversation, weāll explore:
* The power of simple recognition and encouragement
* How affirmation can strengthen resilience and connection
* Ways to create environments where people feel seen and valued
* The impact of gratitude on culture, leadership, and well-being
Through reflection and shared dialogue, weāll consider how a simple phraseā*āgood jobā*ācan carry deeper meaning when itās grounded in sincerity and awareness.
Come join a different kind of conversation ā one that welcomes every perspective in a search for the underlying truths that unite us all ā on seeing, valuing, and uplighting one another.
Join us for an open and respectful conversation where participants can share perspectives, experiences, and insights.
Whether you come to speak or simply to listen, all thoughtful voices are welcome.
Speaking the Language of Virtues: Transforming Everyday Interactions
What if the way we speakāto our families, colleagues, and communitiesācould actively bring out the best in others?
Join us for an elevated conversation on how to incorporate the language of virtues into our daily interactions, inspired by the work of The Virtues Project. This approach centers on recognizing and naming the positive qualitiesāsuch as courage, kindness, integrity, and perseveranceāthat exist within each person and moment.
Together, weāll explore how using the language of virtues can:
* Strengthen relationships and build trust
* Shift conversations from reactive to intentional
* Encourage growth, accountability, and mutual respect
* Create more positive, purpose-driven environments at home and at work
Through discussion, examples, and shared experiences, youāll gain practical ways to integrate this language into everyday momentsāfrom giving feedback to navigating conflict.
Come join a different kind of conversation ā one that welcomes every perspective in a search for the underlying truths that unite us all ā on what we can do through our use of words to contribute to a better world.
