Deep Conversations at Bethesda Library -- Suffering vs. Resistance
Deep Conversations at Bethesda Library -- Suffering vs. Resistance
We are told to "go with the flow," but life is full of grit. **Question 1:** Is suffering an inherent part of the "Earth curriculum," or is it purely a mistake of the human mind’s perspective? **Question 2:** Where is the line between "accepting what is" and being passive/lazy? Can you take radical action to change the world while still being in a state of nondual acceptance? **Question 3:** Think of a current "suffering" in your life. If you removed the story you tell yourself about it, what is actually left? *Thank you guest facilitator, Erin!* \-\-\-\- ***“I am struck with how rare it is to find a few good friends on the path. It is easy to find people who simply want to sit and be entertained by teachers, or who want to sit and entertain by playing the role of teacher. In other words, the quest for affirmation often outweighs the quest for truth.*** ***Yet you may have one or two good friends, and definitely have one or two waiting to be discovered. Find them; be thankful.”*** ***— Shawn Nevins*** 'What will make me happy in life?' ... 'Am I my thoughts?' ... 'What is Enlightenment?' ... We meet every week to ask questions like these in the pursuit of Self-Knowledge and Truth. We are interested in topics like: Zen, stoicism, spirituality, psychology, mindfulness, Nisargadatta, non-violent communication, Socrates, existential philosophy, Alan Watts, taoism, Eckhart Tolle, meditation, Ramana Maharshi, etc. But we are not affiliated with any dogma, philosophy, or religion. Our goal each meeting is to serve as mirrors for one another using question-based inquiry in a safe environment. In a session, every participant takes turns discussing the week's question or topic, and the group asks reflective questions without any agenda besides trying to understand the person's beliefs. A few other guiding principles of our group: * No one is obligated to share * Be honest with yourself and others * Do not try to convince others to believe or think as you do * Keep the focus on the person being questioned We meet at the [Bethesda Library](https://maps.app.goo.gl/GWMozF8zpY1m1PY26) every Monday. The library is a 5 minute walk from the Bethesda Metro on the Red Line, approx 25 minute Metro ride from Metro Center and Gallery Place stations. The library has a a parking lot with metered parking for $1/hour. \*\*\* WE WILL BE IN MEETING ROOM 3 UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED ----- THE MEETING ROOM IS IN THE BACK OF THE LIBRARY \*\*\* Please contact us with any questions!

Profs & Pints DC: Venezuela’s Future—and Ours
Profs & Pints DC: Venezuela’s Future—and Ours
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Venezuela’s Future—and Ours,”** an analysis of how the Trump administration’s intervention in Venezuela will affect that nation, the U.S., and the rest of the world, with Ernesto Castañeda, Director of the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies and the Immigration Lab at American University. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-venezuela-future](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-venezuela-future) .] On January 3rd, after a long military buildup, the United States used special forces to seize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from their residence in Caracas, Venezuela to stand trial here on criminal charges. The development marked a major turning point in our relationship with Venezuela and the rest of Latin America and raised a host of complex questions, not just for Venezuelans living inside and outside that country but for American citizens and other nations of the world. Coming to the stage to break down what all of this means is Ernesto Castañeda, a scholar of Latin America who has given several excellent Profs and Pints talks on immigration policy and has given dozens of interviews to media outlets around the world in the wake of the U.S. raid. In a talk offering informed perspective on the latest news developments, Professor Castañeda will discuss various theories about why the U.S. conducted the operation to get Maduro out of Venezuela. He’s put our nation’s current plans for Venezuela into context by touching on previous U.S. military interventions in Latin America and beyond. Professor Castañeda will look at the implications of recent events for U.S. politics and U.S. citizens and what such developments tell us about the balance of power in the United States. He’ll examine the distance between decisions made by the White House and public priorities, touching on how it all relates to our immigration policies and our views about peaceful protest and democracy. He’ll consider how the Venezuela raid and our actions since have altered relations between the U.S. and other nations and provide scenarios about what the future might hold. In essence, it's a walking meditation and grassroots effort to promote a message of inner and outer peace through personal example and community connection across the United States. **Proper & Respectful Practice TO BE FOLLOW when meeting the Monks:** **1\. Choose simple\, clean flowers \-** Fresh flowers without strong fragrance are ideal. Simplicity reflects sincerity. **2\. Place them low\, not high \-** Gently place the flowers on the ground, never at head level or above the monk. **3\. Do not block the path \-** Set the flowers slightly to the side or just ahead of where the monk will step, allowing him to pass naturally without changing his stride. **4\. Kneel or bow if appropriate \-** If culturally appropriate, kneel or bow briefly after placing the flowers. Keep movements calm and unhurried. **5\. Maintain silence \-** Avoid speaking, calling attention, or making eye contact unless the monk initiates it. **6\. Step back mindfully \-** After placing the flowers, step back to allow space. Let the offering speak for itself. **7\. Offer with intention\, "not expectation" \-** The true offering is your mindfulness and gratitude, not recognition. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **Proper way to present your self to a Monk:** To show respect in front of a Buddhist monk, it is generally recommended to **bow with your palms pressed together** (known as the *añjali* gesture or *wai* in Thai culture), which is a common and appropriate form of greeting and reverence. Full prostration (the "kowtow") is typically reserved for sacred objects like a Buddha statue during specific ceremonies, not as a casual greeting. Here are the appropriate steps and considerations for greeting a Buddhist monk: The Basic Greeting (Añjali/Wai) 1. **Bring your hands together, palm-to-palm, in front of your chest**. This gesture is called *añjali* (or *wai* in Thailand) and can be used as a greeting, a thank-you, or when speaking with the monk. 2. **Raise your hands** to a level appropriate for the monk's status. * For a typical monk, the hands are often raised to the level of the lowered forehead, with the index fingers or thumbs touching the forehead. * The higher the hands and the lower the bow, the more respect shown. 3. **Accompany the gesture with a slight bow of your head or from the waist**, keeping your back and neck straight. 4. **Avoid physical contact** such as shaking hands, especially if you are a woman, as many monks follow a strict code of conduct regarding physical contact with people of the opposite sex. \* Deeper Expression of Respect (Prostration/Kowtow) A more profound sign of respect, often referred to as kowtow in a general sense, is the full **prostration** (known as *krab* in Thai culture). This is typically done during formal ceremonies in a temple or shrine room: 1. **Kneel** on the floor with your body composed. Men usually sit on their heels, while women may sit with their legs tucked to one side. 2. **Bow forward**, placing your palms on the floor about six inches apart, and touch your forehead to the floor between your hands. 3. **Repeat this three times** to show reverence to the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha). 4. Avoid pointing your feet toward the monk or a Buddha image while seated or prostrating, as this is considered highly disrespectful in many cultures. **General Etiquette** * **Address the monk respectfully:** Use titles such as "Bhante" (Pali for "Venerable Sir") or "Venerable". In some traditions, senior monks with over ten years of experience may be addressed as "Ajahn" (Thai for "teacher"). * **Dress modestly:** Ensure your shoulders, chest, and knees are covered when visiting a temple or meeting a monk. * **Sit at a lower level:** If the monk is sitting, you should sit as well, avoiding sitting in a higher position than the monk. * **Use both hands when offering something** and avoid passing items directly to a monk of the opposite gender; use a receiving cloth or place the item on a nearby surface instead. * **Be mindful of your feet:** Never point the soles of your feet towards a monk or a Buddha image. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- Join me to Welcome the Walk for Pease Monks and walk whit them on they last miles from Virginia to DC. around 15 miles. We gather to help each other integrate our journeys, find "the others", and or seek wisdom about altered states of consciousness. Arrive ready to share honestly, openly, and from the heart. Bring your insights from journeys to unpack or your questions about plant medicines and psychedelic experiences to ask the more experienced journeyers. At 7 pm we will do a short grounding exercise and a brief check-in/ice breaker. At 7:15 pm we will begin the integration circle with honest and open processing of psychedelic experiences. Your facilitators are trained in psychedelic integration and or other coaching/facilitation modalities but we are not mental health professionals, we are community members called to service in mutuality. The event is by donation as we do need to pay for the space and supplies used. The suggested donation is $10-$20/person (cash, Paypal or Venmo). Surplus above and beyond covering costs will go towards future community event facilitation and or materials.
Distribution Event - Atheists Helping the Homeless
Distribution Event - Atheists Helping the Homeless
**Looking to** \- Help out neighbors in the DC area? \- Support a secular charity? \- Connect with other atheists and humanists? Join Atheists Helping the Homeless DC at our monthly distribution event! Atheists Helping the Homeless is a 501(c)(3) charity that distributes items like backpacks, socks, gloves, and toiletries to people in need throughout the Washington, DC region. We meet up on the second Saturday of every month outside of a homeless shelter in Silver Spring, MD, called Progress Place, and pass out whatever items we have to whoever is there. Each month we serve between 60 - 100 people. Afterwards, we usually go out for breakfast. Our goal is to provide a way for people to help each other without affiliating with a religion. Our method is to go straight to those in need, and create a welcoming and fun atmosphere to effectively create an environment where secular community can grow and thrive. If this sounds fun, see you there!
ASL Brunch on Sundays in Greenbelt
ASL Brunch on Sundays in Greenbelt
Join our ASL Brunch on Sundays in Greenbelt! All ASL users and learners are welcome. Brunches are alternately held at two restaurants in Greenbelt, both in the same town plaza. ODD WEEKS: 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays, we meet at Cedars of Lebanon, 103 Centerway. EVEN WEEKS: 2nd and 4th Sundays, we meet at New Deal Café,113 Centerway. We are the Greenbelt ASL Community, a group of both Deaf and hearing people who hang out, chat about everyday goings on, trade stories, get to know each other better, and of course, enjoy food together. Many members use ASL as their primary language, several are interpreters or other fluent ASL users, while others are ASL learners who wish to improve their skills while making new friends. Before or after brunch, you can visit the farmer's market and small coop grocery store in the plaza. Please RSVP so we can contact you via email if needed. Our group is on Facebook as Greenbelt ASL Community. Some longtime Brunch attendees don't mark their attendance here, so feel free to stop by even if you don't see others who have RSVP'd on Meet-up.

Contra dance Feb. 21 (First Unitarian Universalist Church) note new time!
# **Band: Old Possum's Menagerie; Caller: Richard Ades** Beginner lesson at 1:30, regular dancing begins at 2:00 pm NOTE THAT WE ARE TEMPORARILY DANCING IN THE AFTERNOON INSTEAD OF EVENING. Dance with us in the afternoon then you can still go out in the evening! **Sponsor: All Soles Contra and Square Dancing, First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd., Columbus OH 43214** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 1:30 - 2:00, followed by dancing 2:00 - 430. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. Please bring your own refillable water bottle.
