GOING UP WEST....A walking tour back to the good old days?
GOING UP WEST....A walking tour back to the good old days?
what ever happened to....GOING UP WEST ! The West End has much less meaning these days, most people just say going into town. To be honest a trip into town does not have the glamour that used to be be conjured up by the thought of a trip Up west. Today we are going to visit some sites and try to re capture the atmosphere of The West End as it was back in the day. These were the days before teenagers emerged and made much of the west end their own with their coffee bars and discotheques. Back in the day the West End meant shopping in the many great department stores, then maybe tea at a Lyons corner house or a visit to the hairdresser. On special nights it meant putting on one's best clothes for a table at a Cabaret club, the occasional treat of a theatre ticket or big screen cinema, or maybe a meal out in a restaurant, all thought of as big nights out. Not like today when wearing a shirt and tie is laughable and scruffiness is quite acceptable. Lets journey back to to those days when the whole world wanted to visit The West End of London The days when one could feel a king or a queen for the day and it was a privilege to be able to go Up West. The cost of this tour is £14 cash on the day Any questions or queries contact Barrie on 07860 911393 or bazaway@aol.com **JOIN OUR 45+ NOT GRUMPY FACEBOOK COMMUNITY** **[https://www.facebook.com/45plusnotgrumpy/](https://www.facebook.com/45plusnotgrumpy/)**

It’s a graceful day that trades wild hills for elegant landscapes and centuries of story-soaked architecture — a walk through **England’s cultivated beauty and historic refinement**. We begin by following the **River Lea Canal**, where ornamental gazebos and overhanging willows frame the water — a genteel **Georgian scene** that sets the tone for the day. From the river, we head to **Hertford Castle**, tracing ancient streets to its green, sheltered grounds and the mellow brick remnants of medieval power softened by time. Once a **royal palace**, the castle served as a residence for **Queen Elizabeth I** and famously housed **Parliament during the Great Plague of London** in 1563, when it fled the capital for safety. Leaving town, our route follows the Cole Green Way, a leafy, level greenway along a disused Victorian railway line that leads us through tranquil countryside and quiet woodland glades toward the grand parklands beyond. The route is rich in gentle charm — bridges, hedgerows, and old rail cuttings now reclaimed by nature — guiding us smoothly into the open beauty of **Panshanger Park**. Here, **lakes, lawns, and tree-lined avenues** showcase the design and symmetry of a great English estate. The park’s vast landscape invites slow wandering — pausing to admire the elegant **Orangery** and the mighty **Great Oak**, said to have been planted by **Queen Elizabeth I** herself nearly six centuries ago. We end the day back in **Hertford’s historic centre**, with time to unwind among its riverside pubs, cafés, and handsome Georgian streets — the perfect close to a day devoted to **England’s elegant past**. 🧭 **Guide:** • Leader: [GRAHAM](https://www.outdooraholics.co.uk/MeetTheOutdooraholics.pdf) • Contact (hike day only): 07796 098487 🍽️ **Food:** • Bring a packed lunch • Pub visit after the hike (drinks optional) 🎒**What to Bring** • Hiking boots/shoes • Water (2 litres minimum) • Packed lunch • Waterproofs (jacket and trousers) • Hat and gloves if cold • Train tickets are arranged – just meet us at the meeting point ⚠️ **Safety** Your guide is a trained hike leader and Outdoor Activity First Aider ❓ **Want to Know More?** • [New to Our Trips?](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/new_to_our_day_hikes.pdf) (perfect for first-timers, answers “what to expect”) • [About Us](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/about_us.pdf) (who Outdooraholics are, credibility, history) • [FAQs](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/FAQ.pdf) (covers common queries) 📲 **Explore More &** **Stay Connected** [Day hikes list](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/hikesbygrade.pdf) 👣 [Calendar - All trips](https://www.meetup.com/outdooraholics/events/calendar/) 📖 [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/outdooraholics/) 📸 [Facebook page](https://www.facebook.com/Outdooraholics) & [Photos group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/Outdooraholics) 📄 **Terms and Conditions** By signing up or attending you agree to our [Terms and Conditions](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/TermsConditionsOutdooraholicsHikingUK.pdf) © Outdooraholics Hiking UK Ltd 2026 E & OE

🟠🤫Silent & Mindful Hike: Gomshall via Hackhurst Downs
A hike via Hackhurst Downs with its beautiful, protected chalk grassland nature reserve in Surrey, part of the North Downs, famous for rare butterflies (like Adonis Blue) and wildflowers (like Wild Basil)... ... in silence, practicing mindfulness as a group. Focusing inwards and tuning into our breath, steps, sounds and surroundings, we let nature speak more clearly. Silent hiking helps us reduce stress, sharpen awareness, and feel connected, not only to the earth beneath us, but to each other, without needing words.
Woodlands of Box Hill - Saturday 3 January
Woodlands of Box Hill - Saturday 3 January
Join us as we walk across the fields and forests of glorious Box Hill in Surrey. Located at the edge of the North Downs escarpment, where chalk gives way to greensand, views from here stretch across much of the south of England. Named after its evergreen box trees, the hill is home to the largest native woodland of its type anywhere in the country. A noted beauty spot for generations, its scenery has been an inspiration to writers such as G. K. Chesterton and Jane Austen. Our route will take us by impressive chalk slopes cut by the River Mole and then the hill itself. We will walk along the scarp face and beyond this make our way across fields and extensive woodlands. **Meeting place**: London Victoria Train Station - near Oliver Bonas (No. 53), not far from platforms 10 and 11). Curating Confidence: Crafting Your Vision for the Year Ahead
Curating Confidence: Crafting Your Vision for the Year Ahead
Step into 2026 with intention, clarity, and a creative practice designed to help you see yourself more clearly. In this special Confidence Lab session, we’ll explore confidence as something you can curate - through the choices you make, the qualities you amplify, and the story you choose to step into. We’ll start with a short guided reflection to surface the traits, habits, and energies you want to nurture in the coming year. Then, using collage materials selected specifically for this workshop, you’ll translate those insights into a visual composition that represents the version of yourself you’re ready to grow toward. This isn’t about resolutions or perfection. It’s about crafting a grounded, imaginative vision of your next chapter - one that feels honest, energizing, and fully yours. All materials are provided. Just bring yourself (and a friend) and a willingness to explore what confidence can look like for you in 2026. **Featured Partner: Columbus Collage Collective** The Columbus Collage Collective was started in August of 2023 by Emily Morgan (aka Lovely But Dead) and Douglas Cuckler (aka Wonder Doug) as a place for collage enthusiasts to gather and create art together. The collective has since become a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to hold free or low-cost collage events across central Ohio. The CCC welcomes all artists of all backgrounds and skill levels and encourages folks to take this time to step away from everyday existence and create art with people who share a love for this dynamic art form. All materials—magazines, scissors, craft knives, glue, paper, cardboard, and more—are provided, so there's no need to bring anything at all (though you're welcome to bring a friend or a favorite tool if you'd like!). We also encourage folks to take home magazines and materials from our events to support continued creativity! Find us on Instagram: [https://www.instagram.com/columbuscollagecollective/](https://www.instagram.com/columbuscollagecollective/) Register or sign up for the newsletter at [https://www.columbuscollagecollective.com/](https://www.columbuscollagecollective.com/) **What is Confidence Lab?** Confidence Lab is a monthly community experience for bold, thoughtful leaders building confidence from the inside out. Whether you’re launching a business, leading a team, navigating change, or simply striving to show up more fully—you belong here. Our work demands clarity, courage, and conviction—but the pace of daily life can erode our sense of self. Confidence Lab creates space to reflect, reconnect, and grow with others doing purpose-driven work. It’s designed for entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, creatives, corporate professionals, activists, and anyone ready to lead with authenticity and impact. ***Please note:*** *All are welcome!
