Discuss & Social 🍷 Race and dating: preference, prejudice or politics?
Many say that "dating your own race" or "racial/ethnic preference" are natural choices - but history shows how many countries tried to *stop* different races from mixing: from racial purity laws in the US and Nazi Germany, to Saudi Arabia's current ban on marrying foreigners, apartheid in South Africa, segregation and eugenics, and bans on marrying someone from a different religion. While mixing was common in ancient empires and trade routes, race is now a common "filter" in apps and dating advice. Is this really just a matter of personal taste, or is there an element of prejudice and politics?
We'll discuss:
1\. Is racial preference really natural \- and why have countries tried to prohibit different races\, ethnicities and religions mixing?
2\. Do modern dating ideas on race/ethnicity/culture carry political goals\, e\.g\. racial purity\, cultural conformism\, etc?
3\. How to tell whether it's preference\, prejudice or politics\, in our daily lives?
*Join us for a relaxed group conversation where we explore the real life, the grey areas, and how our different cultures and backgrounds shape our views about key topics.* *Expect real talk, no judgment, and a chance to learn how others see it.*
**\*Come for the discussion, stay for the friendships. Our weekly discussion series brings together thoughtful people for honest conversations on relationships, life, and society - with warm social vibes before and after.\***
**WHAT TO EXPECT:**
* Good vibes only: we chat big topics in a chill, respectful way. No arguing - just open-minded exchange.
* We warm up with casual socializing (come solo or with friends!)
* The topic starts around 7:45/8pm, wraps around 9:30.
* 🍕 There's pizza, drinks, milkshakes and snacks available at the bar (incl plant-based options)
* And most people stay until late for drinks and mingling!
**DISCUSSION FORMAT:**
**\- Our group conversations are open and flexible\! There is a very soft guided flow to ensure we focus on the key questions\, and to ensure that everyone gets a balanced opportunity to speak\.**
\- We rotate groups intentionally during the discussion so everyone gets to meet a wider mix of people and perspectives\.
\- After the structured part\, you’re free to mix and mingle with anyone\.
**Here's a typical discussion structure, but we may adjust this depending on the turnout:**
\- Introductions and initial thoughts *(\~5 mins).*
\- Group breakouts per question *(\~20 mins x 3).*
\- Final round of opinions *(\~10 mins)*.
\- Mix and mingle\, make new friends\, get drinks etc *(\~until late)*
**Rules & etiquette:**
1\. Debate the topic\, not the participants \- no personal attacks please\.
2\. No phones\, no interrupting\, no bystanding\.
3\. Always follow the moderator/host instructions and guidelines\.

Keep your NVC fit - Role play
Register [here](https://dandelion.events/e/l5xmt)
This session we will focus on Roleplay.
Roleplay is about giving yourself different experiences of dialogue to the ones you normally have, and as you do so, you are creating new neural pathways.
It’s surprising how much is opened up by giving ourselves the opportunity to practice, in a low stakes environment. It’s very difficult to do new things in stressed situations that are already charged.
We aren’t going to do anything different, we are going to do our patterns, the things we always do, we are going to do the things that have always kept us safe.
So, a role play is a low stakes environment, where there are no consequences to getting it wrong, or putting your foot in it. This is a place where you can learn.
Before you come, you can read more in this short post about the [purpose of roleplay.](https://ceridwen.substack.com/p/roleplay)
This is a monthly series to practice 3 core NVC practices
* 4 steps of Self-Empathy
* Empathic Listening
* Role Plays of Difficult Conversations
Practical and Logistics
This is a low-cost,drop in, you can come once or every month or something in between.
These practice sessions aren’t refundable or transferable, except in exceptional circumstances.
This is open to people who have done a Foundation training or Intro to NVC. This is not a beginners class.

A software engineers guide to LLMs
**A software engineers guide to LLMs**
In this talk Richard Conway will break down what LLMs are layer by layer, how they work, how they use software principles to work and how to use them in software.
This will be a fluid talk with a lot of philosophy, maths from school and how to build your software understanding things like hallucinations and new techniques that can make your management of LLMs more deterministic.
We'll consider a lot of things here including the new code generation tools which have developers quivering in their boots, what they mean for our industry and how to use them for effect.
Lots of mini-demos and great discussions, good people, beer and pizza!
**About the speaker**
Richard Conway co-founded the user group, along with Andy Cross, Joe Hancock and Chris Parsons. He is a Microsoft AI MVP and a Microsoft Regional Director and has been writing software in one form or another since his fingers were large enough to hit a ZX81 keyboard.

CMG Gives Back: Serve Brunch at FAITH MISSION GRANT KITCHEN!
Join us as we get together to get together to help those in need at this CMG Gives Back event! We have a great little community of Movie Group friends so rather than see a movie this time, we’ll help “create a better world” by helping serve those in need. Here are complete details and our plan for this event:
FAITH MISSION – GRANT KITCHEN: The Faith Mission kitchen and dining room serves residents 3 meals a day, every day of the year. For this event, our group will help prepare food, serve meals, assist residents in the dining room, wash dishes, and clean surfaces.
PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for BRUNCH from 10:30am to 12:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 10:20am and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
LOCATION: Faith Mission – Grant Kitchen is located at 245 N. Grant Ave. Enter the kitchen at Dock 1 (in the back of the building), indicated in the attached map. On-site parking in the adjacent lot and street parking is available in the surrounding area. Below are some links / attachments with additional info/details:
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Our group will be providing all of the volunteers on this day so a firm RSVP count is essential. Please only sign up if you are certain you’ll be able to attend. If something unavoidable comes up, please try to update your RSVP no later than one week prior to the event. With few exceptions, no shows or cancelations within 1
week of the event will not be eligible for future CMG Gives Back events. I appreciate your understanding as we try to ensure the agencies have the volunteers needed to provide the essential services they provide to the vulnerable population they serve. Our Partner Agency for this event is Lutheran Social Services! A huge THANK YOU to all of YOU for volunteering at this (and any of our previous) CMG Gives Back events!
Should be a good/fun/meaningful time together, Dan
Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

Connected Westerville Night of Networking!
**Connected Westerville Night of Networking** *April Edition: The Introduction Economy*
You've been to the networking events. You've done the small talk. Collected the cards. Forgotten the names. And walked out feeling like you just wasted two hours of your life.
The problem isn't you. It's the format.
Most networking events put you in a room and tell you to figure it out. So everyone defaults to elevator pitches and business talk, and nothing real gets built.
Here's the truth about networking that most people miss: Your network isn't just who you know. It's who thinks of you when they're talking to someone else.
*That's* The Introduction Economy. And it only works when relationships are real.
There's a reason people who come once keep coming back. It starts with seven minutes that feel nothing like networking.
Then we open it up. Free networking. More conversations. More momentum.
This is a room full of corporate professionals, entrepreneurs, business owners, creatives, and career builders in the Westerville and Columbus area. The mix is the magic.
You might never do business with everyone you meet tonight. But someone in this room will think of *you.* **By name**. So, the next time someone needs exactly what you do, you get the recommendation.
**April 14th. RSVP now.**
**When:** Tuesday\, April 14th \| 6:15 PM \-\- 8:00 PM **Where:** Vineyard Community Center \| 6000 Cooper Rd\, Westerville\, OH 43081
Recruiting Virtual Mental Health Group Leaders!
We are recruiting new group leaders for virtual men's groups! Our primary groups are outdoor movement groups, but we are launching virtual groups for the state of Ohio and beyond and the groups will move outside in the spring, creating room for men's groups, women's groups and coed groups all over the country.
Read below to learn about our groups and click the links at the bottom to apply.
### **What is an Outdoor Empowerment Group?**
Our Outdoor Movement & Community Empowerment Groups are simple, guided experiences designed to help people reconnect with nature, themselves, and others. We combine some form of movement (hike, walk, run, bike, yoga, workout) and meaningful conversation within a simple community circle to create a space where individuals can support each other while prioritizing mental and physical well-being.
Whether you’re seeking stress relief, personal growth, or community, our groups offer everyone a unique and welcoming environment.
## **Why Join?**
* **Improve Mental & Physical Well-Being** – Movement, nature, and supportive conversations reduce stress and promote balance.
* **Feel Less Alone** – Build genuine connections with like-minded people in a safe, welcoming space.
* **Gain Clarity & Perspective** – Step outside daily routines and into a space designed for personal growth and reflection.
## **The Ideal Group Leader**
The ideal group leader
* Has a born-in passion for mental health, movement, connecting with nature and building community.
* Has 5 extra hours per week to dedicate to a meaningful cause for at least one year. Yes, you can leave any organization at any time and we can also ask you to leave, but we are building with legacy in mind and we need people who can commit and be ALL IN on this mission to build with us.
* Is independently financially stable with the ability to volunteer with no expectation of pay. This is a deeply beautiful journey of service that all participants commit to at Speak Your Mind.
* An ability to manage groups with high emotional intelligence and desire for human connection.
* An ability to self-motivate and market/promote their group on Facebook and other social platforms.
* Nature informed therapy or clinical therapists/psychologists a plus.
## **Our Impact**

Since launching, we have helped thousands find support, connection, and healing through our Outdoor Movement Groups. 100% of participants surveyed have reported:
* A noticeable improvement in mental clarity and emotional well-being.
* An increase in social connection and a sense of belonging.
* Said they would return again.
We believe mental health should be accessible, community-driven, and rooted in nature. Join us and take the first step toward a more connected, grounded, and supported version of yourself.
### **Why Our Groups are Donation-Based**
Our Outdoor Movement Groups are made possible through a donation-based model. This approach allows us to keep our events accessible to everyone, regardless of financial circumstances, while also ensuring that we can continue expanding our reach. It’s a great way to pay it forward and support the growth of this beautiful mission!
Every contribution helps us:
* **Cover Essential Costs** – Donations allow us to pay essential legal, marketing, insurance, and admin costs as well as nourish the important people who run the organization.
* **Grow Our Mission** – With your support, we can bring these healing experiences to thousands more people in the future and execute our long term plan to expand across the USA, affecting up to 500,000 people per year.
By choosing to contribute, you’re not just leading an event—you’re helping build a mental health movement that supports long-term well-being and connection for all during a severe mental health epidemic.
