But the story is not always a happy one. Like all other areas in Toronto, Little India started out as a purely English - Anglican area and was repeatedly changed as other immigrants opted to leave the security of the downtown core for outer areas. With the opening of the Naaz theatre in 1972, the community that became Little India started to take shape, but in Toronto the forces that developed communities were different in that part of the city sandwiched between Leslieville to the south, and Greektown to the north. With a strictly Anglo-Saxon pro-British community entrenched for over 100 years, now changing to include south Asians, the area was seen as a rather depressed area, or an area in transition, and violence was an unfortunate part of life. Racial tensions increased dramatically with the influx of south Asians. But by the 1980s and 1990s the district had found its feet, and Little India was a popular Toronto district and tourist attraction, with visitors pouring in from around the world to partake of the richness. A true cultural enclave in Toronto! A fascinating history and a fascinating community awaits! Hi everyone. Nathan Phillips Square is playing host to Canadian Latin Fest 2026 on Sunday, 12 April. Through music, food, dance and performance, it celebrates Canadian Latin culture, which I am sure we can all agree, is very vibrant in the city. The event starts at noon with opening remarks and some dignitary speeches. **MEET TIME:** 12:00 noon for our own opening remarks and intros. According to the schedule, the performances are (mostly) over by 3pm. **MEETING SPOT:** in the covered area between Hero Burger and the skate rental shop. **Note:** For those wanting to come a bit later, I will check back at the meeting spot after the first parade ( approx. 1 pm) According to their schedule, the first of two parades steps off at 12:40pm. (The parades are new and I believe they will be quite short and take place within the square.) Whatever your photo interests might be, I am sure there will be lots of ops, not only as part of the festival but also all around City Hall. On a side note, I anticipate putting together meetups in the future, likely during the week when the days are longer, that will offer an element of instruction. The idea is to have willing experienced photographers lead small groups of beginners or those looking to improve their photography skills and/or knowledge of their DSLR or mirrorless. For Sunday's meetup, I think everyone would want to shoot the parade(s)/performances on their own but if there are people interested/willing, they could team up for an hour of guided shooting at some point during the day.
