Hello everyone, We would love to invite you to a free, relaxed hands-on science evening for adults, where we will explore one of the most fascinating molecules of life: DNA. This workshop is a chance to come together, learn something new, and enjoy a friendly community exchange. The evening is free of charge, open to everyone, whether you already enjoy science or are simply curious and would like to try something different. We will begin with a short introduction to what DNA is, then we will focus on strawberry DNA and explore why strawberries are especially useful for this kind of experiment. During the session, you will also have the chance to look at strawberry cells under the microscope before carrying out a simple DNA extraction. By the end of the activity, you will be able to see real strawberry DNA with your own eyes. No previous science knowledge is required — just curiosity, a willingness to explore, and an interest in spending a relaxed evening learning together. The workshop will take place in a classroom setting, so participation is limited to 25 people. Dabei habe ich entdeckt, dass ich oft einen vermeidenen Beziehungsstil habe - ich weiche lieber aus, trenne mich oder spreche Probleme nicht an, weil ich wahrscheinlich in meiner Kindheit aus unterschiedlichen Ereignissen gelernt habe... dass bringt eh nichts, ich kann anderen nicht vertrauen, das macht man nicht, meine Bedürfnisse sind nicht wichtig, usw. In der Auseinandersetzung mit den Beziehungs- / Bindungstypen habe ich bemerkt, wie gut es mit tut, mit anderen mich darüber auszutauschen. Weil: * Ich bin nicht allein. * Ich lernen die Gefühle anderer kennen * Ich entwickle ein gutes Gefühl für die anderen Beziehungsstile (nicht nur meinen) * Ich löse das Thema für mich Schritt für Schritt - und werde immer sicher in meinen Bindungen & Beziehungen. We especially design it for students, PhD candidates, academic researchers, and industry professionals with a research focus in machine learning. **Abstract**: Modern vision foundation models are highly capable and used as feature extractors in virtually any modern computer vision project. However, their patchified outputs inherently limit performance on dense, pixel-wise tasks. This talk presents strategies to learn and optimize dense visual features beyond these standard patches. We first introduce DIY-SC, a framework that leverages pseudo-labels to significantly improve pretrained models for correspondence tasks, while maintaining the original backbone's generalizability. We then focus on AnyUp, a universal feature upsampler that achieves state-of-the-art upsampling performance across diverse resolutions, domains, and downstream tasks. AnyUp is the first upsampler that is agnostic to the source features at inference time, significantly increasing its utility in practical settings. Finally, the talk briefly discusses recent applications of AnyUp. **Bio**: Thomas Wimmer is a doctoral researcher and PhD fellow of the Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems, advised by Jan Eric Lenssen, Bernt Schiele (Max Planck Institute for Informatics), and Siyu Tang (ETH Zurich). He is currently a student researcher in the Semantic Perception team at Google Zurich. His research focuses on visual representation learning and 3D computer vision, and his work has been published at major AI conferences including CVPR, ICCV, 3DV, and ICLR. He has served as a reviewer for multiple A\* conferences and journals, was awarded an outstanding reviewer token at ICCV '25, and has conducted several research stays during his studies, working with Daniel Cremers (TUM), Maks Ovsjanikov (Ecole Polytechnique), and Federico Tombari (Google/TUM). The natural blend of art and science poured into the brewing scene inspired him to take up the craft. Working alongside brewers in Oregon and Colorado, Mark honed his own artisan beer recipes. An old friend looking to start a brewpub and music hall back in Charlottesville eventually lured Mark back to Virginia. In September 1999, they partnered to found Starr Hill Brewery out of a passion for great beer and live music. Named after the local neighborhood, the brewery shared its original space with the Starr Hill Music Hall. Title: Quantum Computing for Business (Exploring Opportunities Available Today) Date: June 27 2026 Saturday Noon - 14:00 EDT Summary: Big media reports that current quantum computers are not able to attack business problems at scale. In Ron's experience, this is only about 95% true. He has found that certain types of quantum computers, specifically quantum annealers, are very good at solving constraint based optimization problems at business scale. This presentation will answer the question “What is quantum computing?” by comparing quantum computers to classical computers and describing the various types of quantum qubits. Ron 'll introduce what quantum computers can be used for and what they shouldn't be used for. Next, Ron will look at a number of quantum computing use cases that are currently available to businesses today. Finally, Ron ’ll present conclusions with a brief discussion of future hardware. There will be time for Q & A. Speaker: Ron has been fortunate to have worked in a broad range of technical disciplines during his career. [Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Can Artificial Intelligence ‘See’?”** A look at how humans and artificial intelligence systems interpret the visual world in fundamentally different ways, with Arryn Robbins, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Richmond and cognitive scientist who researches visual attention, perception, and category learning. But does AI actually “see” the world the way that people do? Or does it arrive at correct answers using representations that differ markedly from human perception? Join Arryn Robbins of the University of Richmond for a fascinating exploration of how humans and AI construct meaning from visual information and a look at comparisons between human perception and AI that reveal just how dynamic and context-dependent our own visual systems really are. Dr. Robbins, who previously has given excellent Profs and Pints talks on flaws and biases in human visual perception, will draw from research in cognitive science, visual perception, and AI vision systems. She’ll explain how human perception is not merely a simple recording of the world, but an active process shaped by expectations, context, goals, and recent experience. You’ll learn how humans form flexible mental representations that allow us to recognize objects across changing environments and conditions, and why those representations continuously adapt as we interact with the world. Many AI systems, by contrast, learn visual categories through statistical patterns in data. They can produce impressive results, but sometimes they also produce strange and unexpected failures, and sometimes they classify images in ways that seem strange to us. Dr. Robbins will discuss what these differences reveal about the nature of perception itself, and why the mismatch between human and AI representations matters for technologies like self-driving cars, medical imaging, facial recognition, and automated surveillance. Important for anyone trying to understand the rapidly growing role of AI in daily life, this talk will explore one of the biggest questions in cognitive science and artificial intelligence: What does it actually mean to “see” and understand the world?
