The Right to Emigrate & The Duty to Stay
The Right to Emigrate & The Duty to Stay
Despite the consensus that the right to emigrate is a fundamental right, it is sometimes argued that this right may be overridden by a countervailing duty to stay. Concerned with the impact of the so-called “brain drain”, many liberal political philosophers suggest that the emigration of large numbers of highly qualified people can severely harm their states of origin, and that, consequently, highly qualified professionals have, at least under certain conditions, a duty to stay. In this talk, I argue against the duty to stay. I first present what I take to be the strongest argument in support of a duty to stay: the argument that potential migrants have a duty to stay as part of the general duty of individuals to create and support just institutions. Then, I argue that this argument raises a normative paradox. It seems that the worse the conditions in one’s country of origin are, the stronger one’s duty would be to stay and support the creation of just institutions. And yet, an exit route from bad conditions in one’s state of origin was precisely what was taken to justify the right to emigrate. It seems that the more reasons we would have to recognize someone’s right to migrate, the more reasons we would also have to argue that they have a duty to not migrate. To resolve this paradox, I propose a reconceptualization of the duty to create and support just institutions. I suggest that the paradox arises because of the implicit adoption of a sedentarist and state-centric interpretation of the duty to create and support just institutions. I argue, firstly, that the duty to support just institutions can be considered to justify not only staying in one’s country, but also leaving that country. Secondly, I suggest that the duty to support just institutions is not necessarily limited to the support of state-level institutions. Last, I hold that the duty to create and support just institutions is sometimes compatible with breaking ties with one’s state of origin, and that each person is the best judge of whether this applies in their own case. Bigger, Better, Bolder Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa
Bigger, Better, Bolder Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa
**Welcome to Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa!** **Spring is in the air, and with it comes the promise of new beginnings, fresh energy, and the joy of connection!** As the season of renewal unfolds, we invite you to step into the rhythm of community, dance, and celebration at Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa. My objective has always been to create a different kind of social gathering—one that is open, non-judgmental, and safe. A place where you can meet people just like you, where socializing and dancing come together to help build community and tear down the walls that separate us. Here, we make new friends, feel a sense of belonging, and enjoy the calmness that comes from knowing we are in a safe and welcoming space. Many times, I have been asked, “Why host an event on Monday night?” Many people escape on the weekend and dread Mondays when they return to work. I believe that if you dance and socialize on a Monday, you infuse your week with joy and positive energy, giving your life balance and helping you face your challenges with enthusiasm and confidence. We’re also thrilled to announce that our trial of advanced Bachata lessons, which began last September, has been a resounding success! Building on this momentum, we’re excited to offer an enhanced schedule for 2026. Our dance evenings will now feature three hours of classes: one hour of beginner to intermediate Bachata, one hour of advanced Bachata, and one hour of beginner to intermediate Salsa. As always, the entrance fee remains $15 for a night of 2 lessons and social dancing. For those interested in the advanced Bachata lessons, there will be an additional $5 fee. Here’s our updated schedule: **Miss Bachata – Main Ballroom** 🕖 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm: Beginner to Intermediate Bachata Lesson (No partner required) 🕗 8:00 pm – 12:00 am: Social Dancing **Miss Salsa – Round Room** 🕖 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm: Advanced Bachata Lesson (+$5) **NEW** 🕗 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm: Beginner to Intermediate Salsa Lesson 🕘 9:00 pm – 12:00 am: Social Dancing ✨ **Additional Details:** ✔️ Free Parking ✔️ Full Bar (Free Water, Beer: $5.75) Over the past decade, organizing Latin dancing events in Mississauga has been a labor of love. Our mission has always been to foster a sense of community, proving that the connections we share are far stronger than the differences that divide us. Loneliness is a growing concern, with over half of U.S. adults and many Canadians experiencing its effects. The COVID-19 pandemic has only heightened this issue. Harvard University's long-term study on happiness, which began in 1938, highlights the detrimental impact of loneliness on health. People with strong social connections experience slower mental and physical decline and greater overall happiness compared to those who are isolated. Here are some key findings from the study: 🌿 Close ties help delay mental and physical decline more than money, fame, social class, IQ, or genetics. 🌿 Relationship satisfaction is a better predictor of aging well than cholesterol levels in middle age. 🌿 A strong sense of community improves memory function. 🌿 Loneliness can be as harmful to health as smoking or alcoholism. And there’s hope! Strengthening our relationships and supporting community initiatives can combat loneliness and build healthier, happier lives. Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa provides a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, expand your social circle, and enjoy a safe, welcoming, authentic environment. Bring your open heart and a smile, and we’ll take care of the rest. 🌸 **Cheers to a season of renewal, joy, and community!** 🌸 **Anna G.** https://www.facebook.com/groups/1871491806494168/ https://www.facebook.com/EventsByAnnaG

Allan Gardens Market & Matcha!
Did you know that there's a Farmers' Market at Allan Gardens every Saturday? Let's meet for Matcha at 11:00 am at 407 Church St. Then, let's head to the Market (approx. six minute walk) around 12:00 pm. I'll monitor the app for a couple of minutes at the beginning of the event but, after that, I'll be focussed on the attendees :) [Matcha Matcha](https://matchamatcha.ca/) Drinks are around $10 but well worth it! "We believe in the transformative power of this vibrant green tea...Packed with chlorophyll, antioxidants, and the calming properties of L-Theanine, our matcha is more than a beverage; it's a gateway to tranquility." The desserts also look yummy (and, of course, healthy ;) [Allan Gardens Farmers' Market](https://www.friendsofallangardens.ca/saturday-farmers-market) Entrance is free "every Saturday 10am-2pm, year-round. Located in the beautiful [Allan Gardens Children’s Conservatory](https://maps.app.goo.gl/kTV3B2uMjLWBjZkq5) & Teaching Garden. Celebrate local food, community, and sustainable agriculture." \*Please see my comments for updates, as this event is weather and TTC dependent. \*Please update your RSVP if you are no longer able to attend so that others can. Waitlisters, please monitor the page in case you are moved to attending! \*A reminder will be sent a couple of days before the event so that you can confirm your attendance. Body in Motion, Fear in Release: Body-Mind-Soul Opening Space
Hello friend! **If you’re serious about a real reunion with yourself — body, mind, and soul working as one — then this event is for you.** In this gathering, we bring together three essential parts of who we are: * **Body** – through conscious, intentional movement (sometimes calm, sometimes decisive and strong) * **Mind** – by deliberately choosing where we place our attention * **Soul** – by giving it the honest expression it needs **Today’s focus is Fear.** You’ll get clear insight into one specific fear that’s been holding you back, and **explore what your life can look like with less of its control.** Using powerful mindset coaching techniques, we combine spoken words with movement. This allows body, mind, and soul to align — creating real A-Ha moments and lasting inner shifts. This is a grounded, no-fluff approach to becoming more wholesome. Come as you are. **Leave clearer, stronger, and more** **integrated**. All adults 18+ are welcome. Siniša Balen Certified Transformation Life Coach [livingcoach.ca](https://www.livingcoach.ca)
