Suzhou Creek and North Bund Walking Tour
Suzhou Creek and North Bund Walking Tour
Come with me for a stroll along my favorite part of Suzhou Creek and North Bund, passing numerous historical sites and culture landmarks while enjoying some natural peace and quiet at the same time. The entire route is about 5 kilometers long and aims to lead participants in reading architecture, appreciating culture, and engaging with history and meet and greet new friends on the tour..
Suzhou Creek, the biggest tributary of the Huangpu, runs through central areas of the city and stretches from the Outer Ring to the Bund.
Suzhou creek waterfront has been revitalized in recent years to provide uninterrupted walking paths, new gardens and ample resting areas.
The riverbanks in Huangpu District, about 3 kilometers from Chengdu Road Bridge to Waibaidu Bridge near the Bund, has become a pedestrian-favored corridor
Let us enjoy the enchanting scenery of the Suzhou Creek not only on foot,
Waibaidu Bridge (Garden bridge)
This is China’s first all-steel bridge and, in Shanghai style, lights up in different colors in the evening. This steel bridge from 1907 is one of a few unequal height truss bridge in China. It played a part in numerous books and movies With its rich history and unique design, it is a symbol of ShanghaiSimply enjoy the walk on the wooden deck of this old bridge
Suzhou Creek holds a special place in the hearts of Shanghai residents. The region's silks and ceramics were carried along the Maritime Silk Road in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), and centuries later the area became an early industrial hub of the city.
Since Shanghai was forced to open its port in 1843, the creek has been the backdrop for dramatic landmarks in the city's history. It was the scene of wartime suffering and the birthplace of China's earliest national industries.
North Bund offers innovation, history, stunning skyline views
Shanghai’s riverside areas have already been transformed with greenery and walking paths, shikumen residences are being renovated, and the historic North Bund is becoming the city’s “most beautiful parlor.” Let's have a walk along North Bund, a gem with stunning views of the Lujiazui skyline, plenty of thrilling adventures to get up to, and countless photo-worthy moments waiting for you to capture.

Stroll back into the city’s past at Sinan Road Citywalk
This meetup tour will feature
walking through the best of Shanghai’s picturesque Former French Concession which include Sinan Road, Fuxing Park,Sinan Mansion. It's a roughly 3 hours walking tour
Cost: RMB 18
Meeting time: 9:30 AM
Meeting point: Exit
1 of Huai hai Zhong lu Metro Station of line 13.
With tree-lined avenues, historic architecture and a quaint collection of shops and restaurants, Shanghai’s Former French Concession is the ideal place to step into the city’s past. Handsome villas perch along the promenade, while high-society ladies sip tea in the shade of linen-white gazebos. The charming scenery and slower pace make it an ideal destination to explore on foot.
Wander through beautiful Fuxing Park. Fuxing Park on Yandang Road,Designed by Papot, a French horticulturalist in 1909, the park maintains the French classic style, which is characterized by plaids and patterns. The construction of Fuxing Park combines French and Chinese layout styles. The north and central parts of the park focus on the French style and includes a carpet flower bed, central fountain pool and China rose flower bed. The southwest part of the park presents the Chinese style and includes a rockery, lotus pond, stream, winding path and lawn.
Sinan Road
Sinan Road is one of the best old streets in Shanghai to escape from the bustling city, with western style villas, small delicate shops and restaurants, in the shade of tall plane trees.
A Great Deal of Former Residences of Celebrities.
Those garden houses used to be residences for celebrities. Former Chinese premier Zhou Enlai has lived at No. 73 Sinan Road, which is a Spanish-style garden house. Moreover, Chinese Peking opera artist Mei Langfang and Chinese modern democratic revolutionaries Sun Yat-sen and his wife Soong Ching-ling also have lived in Sinan Road. These residences are still well preserved and can be visited.
Collegiate Church of St Nicholas, located in no. 16 in Gaolan Road,
has Been Adapted Into A Poetry Book Store. St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church at No. 16 Gaolan Road was built in 1932 in the typical Russian orthodox style with onion dome spires. Chinese practice Wutopia Lab has renovated the interiors of a former Russian orthodox church.
Set on a thoroughfare in Shanghai, China known for its well-preserved, European-style historical architecture, it turned the landmark building into a poetry bookshop named Sinan Books.
Sinan mansions, the only wholly preserved historical garden villa complex downtown. The mansions were initially built in 1920, featuring more than 50 historic villas in various styles. Many were former residences of celebrities such as poet Liu Yazi (1887-1958) and Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961). Some have been converted into hotels, cafes, restaurants and shops.

Wutopia Lab

The Fiction Workshop
Welcome to the Shanghai Writing Workshop. We are interested in everything related to creative writing, and we hope you can join us.
If you're interested in joining, you'll need to join our wechat chat group to let us know if you're lost on your way to the meeting. You can wechat me at texaswriter, and I can get you added. I also encourage you to scan the QR code above to join our official wechat channel. There you can get detailed directions on how to find us, how to sign up for our website (www.shanghaiwriting.com), and details on how we function.
There's a new short prompt available on the website that's updated for each meeting. Try and post a response a few days before meeting if you want others a chance to comment on it.
You also don't have to submit. Readers are always welcome, but I do find that reading before meeting greasy increases the joy of going to meeting.
No experience required. We are a mixed group in terms of experience, backgrounds, and languages, but I find that we are also very supportive of each other in everything from goals to reading to publishing.
In addition to the standard workshop, the Shanghai Writing Workshop hosts two writing retreats a year, puts forward a team for the three day novel writing competition, hosts a reading series called Shanghai Voices, and puts together an ebook anthology of work at the end of every year. We're always doing something, and if you have any ideas, we're always up for anything literature related.
Once again, if you need help getting setup, contact me on wechat, texaswriter, and I hope to see you at the workshop.

Historic Zhang's Garden reopens as a boutique destination
Zhangyuan, or Zhang's Garden, opened in 1885 as China's first modern pleasure garden, but it later decayed into a neighborhood of dilapidated houses. Its former glory has now been restored in the latest round of urban renewal.
Zhang Yuan, a community of hundreds of shikumen (a style featuring Western and Chinese elements) houses in downtown Shanghai's Jing'an district, reopen to the public on Dec 1 2022 after four years of protective renovation.
Zhang Yuan, a community of hundreds of shikumen (a style featuring Western and Chinese elements) houses in downtown Shanghai's Jing'an district, will partially reopen to the public on Dec 1 after four years of protective renovation.
Located just off Nanjing Road West at the corner of Taixing Road and Wujiang Road, Zhang Yuan - or Zhang's Garden - is widely known as Shanghai's largest, best-preserved and most diverse shikumen compound.
The compound was named after its founding owner Zhang Shuhe (1850-1919), a merchant from Wuxi in Jiangsu province. Zhang had bought a piece of farmland in Shanghai from a Briton named Francis Groom before building a garden home for his mother.

1:10 - chat / take off / keep writing.
OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 1-1:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you!
• What to bring
Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block noise or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Electrical outlets are limited, so charge your devices before whenever possible.
See you at The Café on Sunday!
Shut Up & Write!™ Easton Town Center
We'll meet at The Capital One Café, 167 Easton Town Center, Space A-103. This is in the main mall where the Microsoft store used to be, on your left if you're standing at the bottom of the AMC Theater escalator.
Join us on Saturday for an hour of uninterrupted wordmaking!
• What we'll do
Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 10AM on Saturday mornings.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.

Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Greetings writers! Come down and join your fellow wordsmiths for one hour of uninterrupted writing time in the upper level of the Market District Supermarket in Upper Arlington.
The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo.
Writing is largely a solitary craft. Practicing with others in a community setting may be the thing you need to fire your own routine.
We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings, starting the clock at 6:30, following a brief period of introductions. This is solid writing time and all inclusive. Any project is acceptable, be it fiction, non -fiction, work or homework assignment. All is welcome and will remain private to you.
The market boasts a Starbucks, a full service bar and various affordable food options. Parking is plentiful, free Wifi is provided as well as outlets for charging your devices, though they are somewhat limited, so plan accordingly.
Show up as early as you like, or stay late. This group tends to socialize some, both before and after the alloted time, but this is not mandatory to you. Feel free to come and go as you please and late arrivals are welcome.
The cafe may be noisy on occasion so headphones/ earbuds are reccommended as you see fit.
Please try to RSVP if possible so that we may grab enough seats for all—the venue can be busy at times.
Feel free to message me privately wth any questions and/ or concerns you may have.
Happy writing!
Saturday Mornings @ East Market
Let's grab some coffee/food and share a morning chat! The East Market has an ample parking lot and outdoor and indoor seating.
Grab a cup of coffee from Winston's Coffee & Waffles or on your way to East Market and meet us on the second floor - table behind or east of the elevator.
Per what this group is about: "Everyone is welcome! International transplants to Columbus who want to improve language skills, Columbus residents who want to discuss international travel and culture, and anyone who enjoys getting together for good conversations."

Let’s meet and discuss this fun but moving collection of wildly creative short stories.
