Ciorcal Comhrá sa chlub, beginners welcome!
Dear fellow Gaeilgeoiri, Cead mile failte / a warm welcome to this group of Irish language lovers and enthusiasts. Hope you will enjoy everything it has to offer and feel free to suggest new events, and, why not step in as an event organizer? What this group is not: - A group limited to those with perfect proficiency in the language, where any single word of English is banned, and where you will get corrected for every séimhiú that, God forbid, you might be forgetting What this group is: - A forum of Gaeilge enthusiasts willing to share their interest and love of the language. We all started learning a language, including our own, from scratch at some point in our lives. Absolute beginners are welcome and should not feel intimidated. Near perfect and native Irish speakers are also welcome to share their vast knowledge of the language. Hopefully this will create a thriving community of lovers of the language at any level. 📚Book Swap And Social - Treat Your S(h)elf 📚
📚Book Swap And Social - Treat Your S(h)elf 📚
📚 There are always books that live within ourselves. Some books are living rent-free in the house. We need space for new books and to let go of some old ones. In reality, space to accumulate books in Dublin is only a dream. You may be a tsundoku (book hoarder). And want to let go a few books :-) This will also provide an opportunity to refresh our literary tastes, book review from the participants, and declutter our bookshelves. ✨ So let's exchange books and discuss them together! 💬 📋 **Guidelines** * Please bring your used or new books (plural, please!) to swap. Engage in discussions with other participants about the books. * If you read e-books, I understand your situation; however, you are welcome to join us and take home a few books for your reading. 📝 **How does this work?** Bring the books you'd like to swap and place them on the **book swap table**. Then pick the book you like and continue the conversations with the particpants. **What happens if no one picks my book?** You can take the book back with you or leave it in the table. As an organizer, I will take the book and donate to the charity bookshop or place in the little library like one in Pearse Street Dart Station. Feel free to walk around and explore what other participants have brought. When you spot something that interests you, grab it before someone else does! Trust me—there's always friendly competition for the best reads. **Don't forget to bring a bag to carry your new books home!** We highly encourage you to move between tables and strike up conversations with fellow book lovers. These discussions about literature and reading recommendations are often the highlight of the event! ⚠️**Something Happened?** If something unpleasant happened to you, it may happen to others. It may be small but don't hesitate to reach out to me. 🔍 **How to find us?** * When I reach the venue, I'll leave a comment in the meetup where the group is seated. Normally, the booking is in my name, so you can ask the staff for the group. * If you're unable to find us, leave a comment in the meetup page. I'll be able to guide you. As an organizer, I'm always looking for feedback about the event and suggestions for new events, so feel free to suggest ideas to me. 💡 I hope to see you all soon! 😊

📸**Photos & Videos**
These may be taken in the event to capture the fun. If you would prefer not to be included, just let a team member know and we’ll happily accommodate!

**Some Practicalities**
1. You will need to purchase your own food and drink on the night.
2. When you arrive at the restaurant, say the name of the event host and the restaurant staff will guide you to the Table. If you have any issues please message us.
3. For those on the ‘going list’ and ‘wait list’, a direct message will be sent to you a week before the event. Places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis when you reply to this message confirming your attendance. We will reply confirming you have a spot.
4. If you can no longer make it, please try to give us 24-48hrs notice.
5. The age range for this event is 18-39.
6. Please note, Paul is the meetup organiser and the hosts at the event will be Vanessa, Josh, Neil and Rachel.

🍀 Meetup: Ireland — Land, Language & the Art of Resilience
🍀 Meetup: Ireland — Land, Language & the Art of Resilience
🎙 Co-Hosted with Conor Not a lecture. Not tea. A long Irish meal and an interactive discussion. Join us for a shared conversation on Irish history, focusing on land, language, resistance, and resilience. This is participatory, informal, and shaped by the group — stories, questions, reflections, and the odd disagreement all welcome. We’ll explore: • Why land in Ireland was never neutral • How language became identity and resistance • Resistance in everyday and organised forms • Resilience as something slow, collective, and deeply practical We’ll: • Untangle myth from lived reality (without killing the poetry) • Look at how ordinary people navigated extraordinary pressures • Ask why these histories still show up in language, land debates, and national mood • Acknowledge that humour has always been one of Ireland’s survival tools There will be storytelling, discussion, mild irreverence, and a respectful refusal to oversimplify.

Πρώτη φορά!
Πρώτη φορά!
Γεια σας φίλοι! I started this group with a selfish aim - to find Greek speakers to help me practice having conversatiosn in Greek. But, held back by lack of confidence in my speaking abilities, I've put off actually scheduling a meet up. I just don't know that my skills are strong enough to carry a meeting. But what the heck, let's just try this and see how it goes. So, let's meet up and speak as much Greek as we can. For this first meet up, let's just keep it loose and casual. Plan to introduce yourself in Greek and ask a few basic, get-to-know-you type questions. Please, don't be intimidated if you think your Greek isn't advanced enough. My goal is for all partcipants to help each other. Let's chat and not be afraid to make mistakes.

If the link doesn't work please Copy and Paste the Ticket link in Google to see it. ABOUT THE EVENT Come exchange Asian Languages that you speak! We will assign tables for represented languages. All languages are welcome! However we don't guarantee the availability of a partner in that particular language, you would like to exchange. As you all remember well, this event used to bring out hundreds of people every week. However, it was discontinued last year for obvious reasons and we couldn't gather that many people now, because of restrictions. Hence, we are downsizing and caping the number of attendees. We have super limited spots and advance ticket purchase is required. During this unprecedented time we were in lockdowns/confinements and we were not able to stay in touch with our old friends (as we used to) and couldn't make new ones. That is why we came up with the FRIENDING part. We have a lot in common :- We speak different languages, we represent different cultures, we lived/travelled to different countries, we appreciate different accents, we are internationally minded. HOW IT WORKS : We will try to assign tables for each represented languages and will direct attendees to their respective tables accordingly. All languages are welcome! However we don't guarantee the availability of a partner in that particular language, you would like to exchange. After the formal session, we will rotate attendees from table to table. So that everyone meets everyone. During this session, we use our Lingua Franca, i.e, English. You would get to meet your future friends/acquaintances/buddies/pals /partner-in-crimes or may be more:) To hang out/go out or do things together, like Biking, Hiking, Skiing, Traveling,.....etc. Also, this is an ideal event if you are new in town or not! Rules to abide : 1. Event is free and 21+ (bring ID). 2. Be respectful to your counterparts and give them a chance to exchange with others as well. 3. We all are native speakers of one or two languages and be willing to help others and try to accommodate as much as possible. 4. If you don't speak the other person's required language, LEAVE THEM ALONE. 5. Rude or aggressive members are removed from the group at an organizers discretion. 6. This is a face-to-face language exchange event. DO NOT try to arrange an online meeting, by using the comment box or direct message. 7. Most of our members complained about people writing in the comment box. Since it sends notification to all attendees. If you have any questions, send a message to the organizers. Don't write in the comment box. 8. We have ZERO TOLERANCE for solicitation. We don't allow anyone to run their own agenda at the Event. If you are interested to promote/sponsor/collaborate; contact us via (info@merevents.com). 9. When you get there, we will greet you and take you to your respective group. 10. Don't be shy of your local languages. We have diplomates assigned to different countries, who would love to practice your languages. METRO & PARKING INFO : The closest metro station is Woodley Park/Adams Morgan. Street Parking might be a challenge. But if you plan to drive, try your luck on Champlain Street. Otherwise, there is a parking garage around. We highly recommend a shared ride or taxi service.

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: The Secrets of Runes
Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: The Secrets of Runes
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“The Secrets of Runes,”** on the origins, development, and interpretation of the runic script, with Lilla Kopár, runologist and a professor of medieval literature and culture at Catholic University. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-rune-secrets](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-rune-secrets) .] The fame of runes outshines that of any other ancient script. They can be found not just on Viking Age rune stones, but on Bilbo’s door and as the Bluetooth logo on your cell phone. Runic script is commonly associated with magic, used by modern practitioners of neopaganism, and in recent decades has captured the imagination of filmmakers and video game designers. Yet most of us know little about the historical origins of runes and have no clue how to read or use them. Come to Crooked Run Fermentation in Sterling, Va., to get schooled on runic script with the help of Lilla Kopár, a veteran scholar of runes who has earned a following among Profs and Pints fans by giving fantastic talks on medieval monsters and Norse mythology. As someone who has carried out extensive field research on runes, published several articles on runic objects, and even appeared on the History Channel commenting on runes in America, she’s exceptionally qualified to introduce you to runology and the fascinating things that runes tell us. Dr Kopár will discuss the development of runic script from its humble origins on the borders of the Roman Empire in the first or second century CE, through its popularity in the Viking world, to its use and misuse in modern times. She’ll discuss how runes are a set of related alphabets that underwent changes over time and she’ll describe what inspired changes in this writing system and where and how runes were used in the medieval period. Her richly illustrated talk will highlight some of the most intriguing objects with runic inscriptions, from humble bone fragments to impressive rune stones, and offer insight into the scholarly methods of deciphering and interpreting runic inscriptions. We’ll also look at the function of the runic script from simple practical notes and memorial inscriptions to cipher-runes and magic. The most fun might be the in-class assignment, which will involve reading a few runic inscriptions and writing your name and other words in runes. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) Image: Part of Codex runicus, a rune manuscript written on animal skin and dating to about 1300 (University of Copenhagen / Wikimedia Commons).
