By building a Flappy Bird-style game, we'll unpack how shared UI rendering actually works while navigating the realities of iOS interoperability and common architectural gotchas. You'll leave with a clear roadmap for seamlessly translating shared business logic into performant, cross-platform pixels. Clinton is a Distinguished Engineer at Capital One with a focus on Mobile and AI core platforms **Second Talk Description:** • Swift on Android Marc Prud'hommeaux The release of Swift 6.3 features official support for the Android platform. This is the culmination of over 10 years of effort to bring the Swift language to Android, first through a series of independent and uncoordinated projects and then eventually coalescing into an official Android Workgroup under the umbrella of the Swift project. The result is the Swift SDK for Android, a cross-compilation Swift SDK that can be used on macOS and Linux to compile Swift code into the various Android architectures as a native library. But what can you actually do with Swift on Android? Far from being limited to just libraries for sharing business logic between Android and iOS, you can, in fact, use it to build and distribute entire apps. This talk will discuss the various ways in which the Swift SDK for Android can be used to create applications, from the lowest-level manual native interaction with the Android NDK and SDK, to synthesizing Java bindings generated with the nascent swift-java project, all the way up to creating full Jetpack Compose powered apps using [Skip.dev.](http://Skip.dev.) Swift is now a contender among the languages that can be used to build applications for both iOS and Android. While it is a newer entrant compared to the established players like Dart, JavaScript, and Kotlin, it features some distinct advantages that make it worth considering for your next app project. Marc Prud'hommeaux has been developing apps for iOS and Android since 2008, and was the author of the very first ebook reader for the iPhone: Stanza. He has worked in a variety of roles over the years, designing and building apps for giants like Amazon, Bose, and the New York Times. In 2022 he started [Skip.dev](http://Skip.dev) ([https://skip.dev](https://skip.dev/)) with the vision of bringing Swift and SwiftUI application development to Android, and is one of the founding members of the Swift Android Workgroup. He is also the founder of the non-profit App Fair Project ([https://appfair.org](https://appfair.org/)) and an advocate for software freedom. E-biking the Reston Lake Trail in Virginia with E-bike Lovers
E-biking the Reston Lake Trail in Virginia with E-bike Lovers
[https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44182368](https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44182368) 23 miles. Toilets in the beginning, middle and end of the trail. This trail is approximately 23.2 miles with two short but steep inclines and one very shallow water crossing. It took considerable time to design this route, showing the best Reston offers. Our challenge was to cross the Dulles Access Road in an e-bike-friendly way. Most miles are on protected cycling paths, including the W&OD trail. Even if you live in Reston, most connecting trails may be new to you. Just some 30 minutes from Washington DC is Reston. We will be e-biking from the Water Mine Family Swimming Hole to Reston in the vicinity of Reston's man-made lakes. Reston is a recently established urban area. It was founded in 1964 to revolutionize postwar urban planning. It is known for its two golf courses, lakes, ponds, a high density of trees, and open spaces. We will visit the Vernon J. Walker Nature Education Center during lunch. The trail is on asphalt roads and paths with occasional short, but steep inclines and declines. Please bring snacks, lunch and plenty of water. **Free Ride With GPS for E-Bike Lovers** The Ride With GPS E-bike Lovers club membership is now free as www.ebikelovers.com generates sufficient income from ads to cover the costs. The distance will be 23.2 miles or shorter any time you are fully satisfied with biking for the day. For the E-bike Lovers group to succeed, we must carefully grow our membership. Energizing Walk for Busy People!
Energizing Walk for Busy People!
Join our weekly walking meetup to have fun, maintain a healthy lifestyle, meet new people, and enjoy nature! We meet Saturdays at 10am, by the bike racks and benches 150 feet in front of BUBBLES Hair Salon in Reston, leaving no later than 10:05. Every week we'll walk the Green Trail to Lake Anne Plaza (\~1 mile), pause there for 5-10 minutes (water, bio, and from April-Nov a Farmer's Market), then circle the lake (2 miles) before returning to our starting point. It's roughly 3.5 miles and takes about an hour and a half. Afterwards, some members will often head to a local restaurant to refuel and relax before tackling the rest of the day. This event is open to all ages and fitness levels, and both friends and dogs are always welcome! We recommend dressing for the weather (umbrella, water bottle, snow shoes, hat, etc.) since we'll always walk, rain or shine. By signing up, you accept and assume all risks and responsibilities with this activity, and nobody will be held liable.

Comparative Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays Tasting: Germany and Burgundy
Comparative Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays Tasting: Germany and Burgundy
Please plan to join the German Wine Society on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 7:00 pm for a comparative presentation on Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in Germany and the Burgundy region of France, and tasting of twelve wines to illustrate the varieties of wine made from these grapes in these countries, by our own Annette Schiller. Registrations for this event are due by Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and the price is $55 for GWS members, $62 for non-members. Please be aware that, due to limited supply of the wines and size of the venue, we have a maximum cap of 40 for attendance at this event. Reserve early to avoid disappointment! What comes to your mind when you hear: “Chardonnay” or “Pinot Noir”? Burgundy, of course! That is rightly so. Burgundy is one of the world’s most revered wine regions and unique in focusing on two grape varieties: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. For more than 1000 years Burgundy vintners have understood that different soils and climates give different wines. They have honed their skills to produce wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that reflect the place they are coming from. When you hear: “Germany” – you think Riesling. Riesling also is a terroir expressive grape variety and the Germans know about producing a wine that reflects its place. But Germany is not a mono-varietal wine region like Burgundy. There are many more grape varieties growing successfully here. For more than 1000 years Pinot Noir has been grown in Germany, where it is called “Spätburgunder,” directly translating as “late Burgundy.” Pinot Noir is now the most widely planted red grape in Germany, accounting for 11.8% of all plantings. Chardonnay, in contrast, has only officially been allowed since 1991, though there were earlier trial plantings, and is still only about 2.2% of total cultivation, while Riesling has remained the flagship grape. Climate change presents new opportunities for German vintners. There is an evolution beyond traditional wine styles and grape varieties. At the same time, Burgundy’s prices have soared and wine lovers often get priced out of their favorite wine. Germany offers a genuine alternative. At this tasting we will show you Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from both wine regions side by side. We start with a comparison of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Germany and Burgundy on the regional level. The next flight will be a step-up quality-wise: a comparison on the village level. As a highlight we have a comparison of 1er Cru Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Burgundy and Erste Lage (Germany’s designation of 1er Cru) Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Germany. We will taste 12 wines with many in the upper price bracket. Join us for this one-of-a-kind opportunity to have wines from top Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers from two different but also in some aspects similar regions. It will be fun to discuss the wines during the tasting and it will be very interesting to hear the verdict of the audience on the favorites. The planned wine list is depicted below: Part 1: PINOT NOIR / SPÄTBURGUNDER FLIGHT A: REGIONAL LEVEL Germany: 2023 Weingut von Winning, Pinot Noir Royal, Pfalz Burgundy: 2022 Albert Bichot, Bourgogne FLIGHT B: VILLAGE LEVEL Germany: 2018 Weingut Bercher, Burkheimer, Baden Burgundy: 2022 Domaine Raquillet, Mercurey FLIGHT C: 1er CRU / ERSTE LAGE LEVEL Germany: 2022 Kallstädter Steinacker, Weingut Rings, Pfalz Burgundy: 2022 Volnay Santenots, Domaine Thierry Matrot Part 2: CHARDONNAY FLIGHT A: REGIONAL LEVEL 2021 Weingut Kühling-Gillot, Réserve, Rheinhessen 2022 Maison Vincent Girardin, Cuvée St.-Vincent, Bourgogne FLIGHT B: VILLAGE LEVEL Germany: 2024 Weingut Jülg, Schweigen, Pfalz Burgundy: 2023 Domaine Ferret, Pouilly-Fuissé FLIGHT C: 1er CRU / ERSTE LAGE LEVEL Germany: 2023 Bönningheimer Sonnenberg, Weingut Dautel, Württemberg Burgundy: 2023 Beaune – Grèves, Le Clos Blanc Louis Jadot A tasty buffet of cheeses, bread, crackers, charcuterie, grapes and veggies will be provided to accompany the wines. Our tasting will begin at 7 p.m on Saturday, May 2, 2026, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. to admit guests. While there is not off-street parking at this location, on-street parking is available (bear in mind DC parking restrictions and meters), and there is easy access to Metro, at the Van Ness Red Line station. You can register and pay for this event only by following the instructions on our chapter website, https://germanwinesocietydc.org. Simply confirming attendance on meetup is NOT sufficient for a reservation. You will need to create a GWS account for the website if you do not already have one. You can also become a member or renew, if your membership is not current, together with your registration for this event by including an annual $35 dues payment (for an individual or a couple), through PayPal, or by mail using a check, in the same manner as registering for the event. If you have been a member of the GWS Capital Chapter in the past but are not sure of your current membership status, please email the Secretary at the above e-mail to confirm your status. We do request that if you are experiencing symptoms of covid-19, flu or other contagious illness, or have tested positive for such an illness, you stay home and recover, and avoid putting other guests at risk. Refunds can be provided in these circumstances if you notify us before the day of the event, to allow us time to find another guest to take your place. Otherwise, refunds can only be made if you notify us before the deadline for registration. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Members and guests should use public transportation to events, rely on a designated driver, or taste the wines rather than finish them. If you have questions about this event, you may contact the event organizer and presenter, Annette Schiller, at aschiller@ombiasypr.com , or by phone at 703-459-7513. We've been to the Reston location - this is their store in Fairfax. It's a little smaller, so I've set an attendee limit. Same menu, same good food, and I recommend the housemade blackberry syrup for a latte, or their Rose Matcha Latte. Both are kinda unique. This weekend we're meeting on Sunday, a great way to rest and reset, especially after a busy Saturday. Join me. (No discussions on politics, religion or potentially controversial topics. We're here to relax and have fun. Just be respectful and we'll be alright. Pay your own way, and enjoy!)
