TOG Watch Night: The Secret Life of Components (Tim Hunkin)
TOG Watch Night: The Secret Life of Components (Tim Hunkin)
We’re kicking off a new bi-weekly Monday Watch Night at TOG. We’ll watch an episode of Tim Hunkin’s “The Secret Life of Components” together, then have a relaxed Q&A and discussion afterwards.
This is a friendly, low-pressure way to learn the kind of practical tips you normally only pick up through years of making, fixing, and building. Perfect for beginners, makers, repair folks, and engineers who enjoy the practical side of components and mechanisms.
How it works
\- Watch together \(one episode per night\)
\- Q&A and chat after: questions\, examples\, tangents\, and “how would we do this at TOG?”
\- If you miss a week\, no stress\. Watch it at home and come along to the next one
First session
\- Monday 26 January
\- Episode 1: Chain
\- Free and open to all
\- TOG Hackerspace \(Dublin 12\, D12 CF6V\)

Tutorial 8 - Convolutional Neural Network with image classification
My name is Aurelie and I'm graduating with an MSc in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Limerick.
I run monthly **machine learning** and **deep learning** tutorials in Dublin with a small group of people.
\*\*In this tutorial, we will build a **CNN** model to classify images into categories, we will be using a public dataset. Together, we will walk through the full pipeline from data preprocessing to model training and evaluation. You will receive a jupyter notebook with reusable code showing all of these steps. No set up required, just a laptop and a google email address :)
**The tutorials are limited to 15 participants and you can reserve your spot either here or by emailing aureliem219@gmail.com. Please make sure to book as soon as possible, as the registration count on Meetup does not guarantee availability.**
**For more information about the tutorials:**
* The tutorials are interactive and will be conducted using **Jupyter notebooks** on **Google Colaboratory** (a free, cloud-based platform that lets us write and run code directly in the browser). While **Google Colaboratory** is free to use, tasks that require more computational power (such as training deep learning models) may benefit from GPU access. In that case, Google offers a once-off payment for around €10 which can last several months depending on your usage.
Some familiarity with **Python** or other programming languages is helpful but not required. Everyone is welcome to join and learn at their own pace.
* The tutorial lasts for 1.5 hours.
* During the tutorial, I share the Jupyter notebook with participants so they can keep it for future reference. We go through the notebook step by step together and I do my best to answer any questions along the way.
* The notebook includes the complete code from data preparation to model training and evaluation. It can be reused or adapted for your own business needs or personal projects
* We will be working with a variety of **Python** libraries including **Scikit-learn**, **PyTorch**, **TensorFlow**, **Keras**, **Seaborn**, **Pandas** and **Matplotlib** and the **Hugging Face** framework. These tools will help us explore different machine learning and deep learning techniques using publicly available datasets.
* Each tutorial focuses on a different algorithm in depth. Topics covered include **linear regression**, **logistic regression**, **K-means clustering**, **decision trees**, **artificial neural networks (ANNs)**, **convolutional neural networks (CNNs)** for image classification, **object detection** and **natural language processing**. The goal is to break down each technique step by step, making it approachable and practical for real-world applications.
This tutorial take place at the **Grafton Hotel, 32 Stephen Street Lower, Dublin 2** (We will be sitting in the lounge in the corner or on the right handside). It will run from **1.30 pm** to **2.30 pm**.
**Grafton Hotel, 32 Stephen Street Lower, Dublin 2**
* The tutorials are a high-level practical introduction to machine learning and deep learning and the emphasis on understanding how we process the data , train and evaluate a model with Python. We won't cover the mathematics behind it however some tutorials may have mathematical formulas as part of the algorithm explanation and some tutorials might have more complex data preprocessing as it depends on the datasets and the task we are doing. However the tutorials focus on the practical part!
* *Payments need to be made in advance to secure your place and fees are non-refundable unless I need to cancel the event, in this case refunds will be made.*
Civic Tech Working Session: Platform & Public AI Infrastructure
This is the first in-person working session for the Abundance Federation Dublin group. We’re bringing together a small group of engineers, designers, and data-minded people to work on real civic tech.
We already have:
* a working Kindness & volunteering platform (profiles, communities, messaging, tasks, incentives)
* early infrastructure plans for building public, ethically governed AI datasets
To reach our goals we need focused work to deliver usable MVPs.
On the night we’ll:
* walk through the current platform (warts and all)
* outline the data infrastructure work at a high level
* break into small groups to identify:
* what’s most broken
* what’s feasible for volunteers
* who wants to keep working on what
This first session is primarily aimed at people interested in helping shape and build the technical foundations — engineering, design, data infrastructure, or product.
That said, the wider group is deliberately mixed. Not everyone here will write code, and that’s expected.
Over the coming months we’ll also be forming:
* data collection and annotation teams (including student and adult groups),
* testing and feedback groups for the platform,
* and field-based activities (e.g. environmental and farming data days).
If you’re interested in those kinds of contributions, you’re very welcome — this first meetup is just the starting point.
The Meet Up will be:
* In-person, in the Digital Hub, Dublin
* Thursday Feb 12th , 7–9pm
* Pizza and soft drinks provided
* We’ll aim to finish on time around 9pm.
* For anyone who’s up for it, a few of us will likely head to a nearby pub afterward

Python Ireland February 2026 Meetup
**Talk: How to bring a Python monolith back from the brink.**
A real life case study on a Python monolith: it was the key business driver, but in 2022 is was about to be officially designated as 'deprecated', and a huge project to break it into micro services launched.
Learn about what we did instead. This talk touches on python best practices for code readability, performance, ORM use (sqlalchemy), code architecture and the pitfalls of microservices.

### ✨ What Is the Social Pub Crawl?
A relaxed and social pub crawl designed to help people connect naturally while enjoying a night out in Dublin.
This is **not a massive party crawl** and not a tourist tour.
It’s a friendly, international experience where drinks, short social games and good conversations come together in an easy and natural way.
Whether you come alone or with friends, you’ll quickly feel part of the group.
### 🍻 How It Works
We’ll visit several pubs in the city centre, staying around **30–40 minutes in each one**.
At every stop, the organizer will run a **short and simple social activity**.
These games are designed to:

* Help people interact without pressure
* Work well in busy, noisy pubs
Between activities, there’s plenty of time to chat, grab a drink and enjoy the atmosphere.
🏆 In each activity, points are awarded to several participants.
At the end of the night, **the 3 people with the most points win a free drink**.

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Compensation Data
**People Analytics 101: Making Sense of Compensation Data**
Compensation data is one of the most widely used and widely misunderstood forms of people analytics.
The session will cover where compensation data comes from, including market pricing data, internal payroll data, and benchmarking sources, and how companies think about structuring and analyzing that information. We will explore how compensation data is leveraged to set salary ranges, manage internal equity, support hiring and retention, and align pay with business strategy. A portion of the session will address common data challenges and limitations, such as market noise, inconsistent job matching, and incomplete datasets, while keeping the primary focus on practical use rather than technical depth.
The session will also look ahead at where the space is going, including the growing impact of pay transparency laws, expanding pay equity requirements, and emerging regulations in the US and Europe that require organizations to report on gender and pay gaps. The goal is to give attendees a clear mental model for how compensation analytics works today and why getting it right is becoming increasingly critical.
(note: we are back at Rev1 this month!)

CBusData - Ok I Want to Get Data into Fabric - Now What?
I love my job and one of the main things I do is help customers get going with any of the data technologies at Microsoft. Right now there are a lot of my customers asking about Microsoft Fabric. It's hard to weave across all the shiny new options across the Fabric landscape, let alone figure out where it fits into your organization. In this session we'll focus on answering one question - how can I get data into Fabric? We'll talk through the "it depends" options and see some of the options in live demos.
