We all experience loss – of roles, relationships, identities, expectations, or direction – yet we rarely pause to reflect on it. This interactive workshop creates a calm, reflective space to explore how loss shapes our lives and decisions, both personally and professionally. Drawing on a simple but powerful format (including candles, silence, and guided questions), participants are invited to share, listen, and reflect at their own pace.
The session blends elements of “death cafés” with a broader exploration of transition, helping participants better understand endings – and what they make possible.
Participants will:
\* Explore different types of loss (personal, professional, existential).
\* Reflect on how transitions shape identity, decisions, and growth
\* Practice listening and speaking in a structured, non-judgmental space
\* Gain language and perspective for navigating change and uncertainty
\* Identify insights they can carry into work and everyday life.

You will leave with a deeper understanding of loss as a source of clarity, connection, and possibility.
About David Sunderland
David is British and French since 2019. He also has strong Brazilian sympathies after being married to a Brazilian woman for nearly 20 years. A similar period of time working in the United Nations, along with various other voluntary and civil society work, has reinforced his idealism while granting him more pragmatic perspectives around planning, communication and human relations.
He founded, and continues to be Chair of, www.plenna.org that encourages better preparation for death and dying, whatever one's age or situation. His personal website, including links to his writing (with details on his forthcoming book, ’The Punctuation of Loss’), is www.intermundia.org.

Debate Night: The Rise of China
The People's Republic of China has risen from one of the world's poorest countries to an economic powerhouse. While China is still not at the level of wealth that Western countries are, its power and global presence are greater than anytime in the last two centuries. In 2026, China controls most of the world's manufacturing, and is expanding its economic reach throughout the world. Long associated with simpler industry, these days, China is a force to be reckoned with in advanced manufacturing, competing with Western companies in sectors like cars, electronics, and information technology. With the Belt & Road Initiative, Confucius institutes, and intensifying global trade, China is seeking to spread its economic and cultural influence worldwide.
Much discussion around the rise of China focuses on what the West should do in response. This time at Brussels Debaters, we're going to go in a different direction. After all, the world is a big place, and the West and China aren't the only important locations to keep in mind.
Come join us for what should be an interesting debate about China: the world's second superpower, the historical hegemon of humanity, and the nation that wishes to reclaim the mantle it once wore.
This debate will follow a British Parliamentary format with eight debaters split into four teams of two.
Participants who wish to speak are highly encouraged to bring a paper and pen. You are welcome to participate even if you have no prior debating experience.

Reading Club: written by women
Once a month we get together to discuss a book written by a woman author. We will read all kinds of literary genres. We choose any published work provided that it discusses gender issues and that it is written by a woman author. We want to discuss books that empower us to be ourselves and bring change to the world.
During the discussion, we will answer the following questions:
\- what resonated with me?
\- what did I learn?
\- what can I apply?
**The book for May is How Beautiful we were by Imbolo Mbue.**
At the end of the event, we choose the book to be read on the following event based on the suggestions of the participants.
**Who is this book club for?**
The reading club is open to everyone, not only women! The discussion will be in English, but locals and internationals alike are welcome!
We will limit the group to 12 people to ensure that everyone has the chance to speak and encourage discussion. The meeting will serve as a discussion, so don't forget to read the book beforehand ;)
**About the volunteers:**
Viviana has been living in Leuven for 14 years. She loves reading and loves to share this passion with other people. She is one of the volunteers and founder of the regular IHL book club Written by Women.
Vanessa is originally from Puerto Rico and has been living near Leuven for the last 3 years. She is very curious and loves reading (especially books that surprise her) and seeing other's perspectives through stories.

Photoresk at Zinneke Parade: Brussels street photography walk + social
Join Photoresk for a relaxed afternoon of street photography at the Zinneke Parade in Brussels. We meet in front of Café Metteko before the parade, photograph together for about two hours, then come back for a drink and chat.
The Zinneke Parade returns to the centre of Brussels on Saturday 30 May 2026, and it is exactly the kind of colourful, surprising city moment that is fun to photograph together.
We will meet at 14:30 in front of Café Metteko, Boulevard Anspach 88, 1000 Brussels.
The parade starts at 15:00. The different Zinnodes move through the centre in a loop, so from one good spot on the route we should be able to see the full parade between 15:00 and 17:00.

Afterwards, from around 17:15, we will meet again at or near Café Metteko for a drink, a chat, and maybe a first look at our favourite shots.

Escape the city bustle and join us for a magical evening walk from the royal gardens of Tervuren, through the ancient Sonian Forest, ending at the picturesque Rouge Cloître.
This hike is perfect for anyone looking to unwind, breathe some fresh forest air, and enjoy the golden hour colors.
🗺️ The Route
We will start at the Tervuren Station (terminus of Tram 44). We’ll begin by walking through the formal gardens and ponds of Tervuren Park, enjoying the open views and the sunset light reflecting on the water.
From there, we will dive into the Sonian Forest (Fôret de Soignes), walking under the canopy of the majestic beech cathedrals. We will walk through the magnificent Arboretum that boasts centennial trees and majestic Giant Sequoias.
The path will lead us gently downhill towards the historic Rouge Cloître (Red Closter), a 14th-century Augustinian priory nestled on the edge of the forest where we will stop for a well deserved drink.
🕒 The Plan
*Meeting Time: 14:50
- Meeting Point: Just outside the Tervuren Station (Terminus of Tram 44).
*The Walk: We depart at 15:00 sharp.
- The End: We aim to arrive at Rouge Cloître around 18:00 - 18:30.
*Après-Walk: We usually grab a drink at the beautiful Maison du Prieur in Rouge Cloître.
📋 Practical Details
- Distance: Approximately 12 km.
*Duration: \~3.5 hours walking time.
*Pace: Casual to moderate. We wait for everyone, but please be comfortable walking this distance.
- Terrain: Mostly flat/downhill with some unpaved forest paths.
🎒 What to Bring
*Comfortable Shoes: Walking shoes or sneakers (trail runners are great if it has rained recently).
- Water: Stay hydrated!
*Layers: Evenings can get chilly in the forest.
🚇 Getting Home
The walk ends at Rouge Cloître. From there, it is a short 10-15 minute walk to Herrmann-Debroux metro station (Line 5), buses and tram 8 which connect you easily back to the city center.

But before you can plant something new, you usually have to clear out the weeds. What mental clutter is taking up space in your head right now, and what do you actually want to cultivate in your life?
Join us in the cozy, backyard of a lovely local bookshop for a warm, friendly, and hands-on afternoon. Through a series of collaborative writing and drawing activities, we will explore ways to dust off the winter cobwebs and map out our intentions.
Then, we'll get practical. We’ll be decorating plant pots with personal intentions, before filling them with soil and planting real plants. You'll leave the bookshop with a tangible, living reminder of what you’re choosing to grow this season.
Whether you want to dive a bit deeper or just have some fun—all are welcome.

However, as we further unpack and explore all these factors, we might soon begin to see that the answer(s) may not be that simple after all - not only considering the reality of limited resources (not enough money or energy - or surface area - to realize all visions, therefore choices have to be made), but also confronting the reality that each decision made will have implications on the whole system, as every element in a city both influences and requires all others.
Inspired by Plato's *Republic,* one approach to answer the question "What is an ideal city?" could be to compare this question with the question, "What is an ideal human being?" If there might be *many* types of ideal cities or human beings, what properties (again, excuse the pun!) would they all have in common?
Each city should best of course be studied in the context of its particular history, geography, climate, ecosystem, economics, culture etc. How have cities optimized (achieving differing degrees of success) their natural advantages while compensating for their vulnerabilities?
What type(s) of people would be the ideal cities' inhabitants and visitors?
How homogeneous or heterogeneous should a city be to both flourish and function optimally? (cf. meetup topic of 7/11/2020). In which ways should its citizens behave uniformly and in which ways diversely?
Should architecture and urban design be used to promote social/political/ethical behaviour?
How would *social* navigation ("networking" and maintaining ties) in our city operate? What sorts of infrastructure and urban culture would facilitate thriving interactions?
How can city and nature be best reconciled?
How should our cities deal with climate change and function sustainably?
Where do we go from now? What lies in the future for our cities in the world today?
At the micro level...
What would your ideal city look like?
(For example - just 1 out of hundreds of possible questions - how high should its highrises be?)
What would be the ideal size of geographical area that we would consider to be our "home territory" i.e. the amount of earth surface area that we move upon during an average day/week/month of our living?

Would a "low-stress" lifestyle be ideal, and if so, what characteristics of our ideal city would facilitate this?
What would you argue are the most positive and negative aspects of cities you can think of in the world today?
