Recession or Resilience? Interpreting the Post-COVID Economy
Recession or Resilience? Interpreting the Post-COVID Economy
Is the recession really coming — or is it just ghosting us? Is it slowly creeping in, or will it never fully arrive? And where is the drop in housing prices we’ve all been waiting for? In this session, we’ll explore these questions and more as we try to make sense of the post-COVID economic landscape: uncertainty, resilience, inflation fatigue, and what might actually lie ahead. This event will be co-hosted by Cillian, who will help guide the discussion and bring expert perspective to a topic that affects all of us, whether we like it or not. Looking forward to having you join us for what promises to be a thoughtful and lively conversation.
Monthly Meetup in the pub
Monthly Meetup in the pub
We will try to secure a table downstairs in the venue in order to keep the location consistent. New people who know nothing about Linux are welcome and encouraged to attend, please don't be shy. If you are new please feel free to approach one of the organisers, and we'd be only happy to help explain things as best as we can, we honestly don't mind and don't judge. We were new once ourselves :) Please note that in general, these are adult friendly meetups, therefore, we are not responsible for those under 18 in attendance. We may have events targeted at children in the future. As with any Meetup, please try to stick to your RSVP or change it to No if you can't come.

The 36th (Ulster) Division in the German Spring Offensive, March 1918.
The 36th (Ulster) Division in the German Spring Offensive, March 1918.
**The 36th (Ulster) Division in the German Spring Offensive, March 1918** **By Michael Nugent** Having embarked for the Western Front in October 1915, by March 1918, the 36th (Ulster) Division bore little resemblance to the volunteer Division which left these shores with such bright hopes. Action at the Somme, Messines, Langemarck, and Cambrai had thinned out the originals and with conscription ruled out in Ireland, the ranks were filled with men posted from mostly English Regiments and conscripts. Added to this was the reorganisation of Infantry battalions across the British Army in early 1918, which saw the number of Infantry battalions in a division reduced from twelve to nine. In March 1918, the Division was part of General Sir Hubert Gough’s Fifth Army and based just opposite the French town of St Quentin. They met the full force of the Kaiserschlacht (Kaiser’s Battle) on a foggy Spring morning in an unfamiliar defensive concept, with many units being surrounded before they were aware what was happening. There followed a fighting rearguard for a week, featuring many acts of heroism and resulting in two Victoria Crosses being awarded to men of the Division. The talk will focus on firstly, factors which led to the Division being in position opposite St Quentin on that fateful morning and will then develop by following the Division in its desperate rearguard action over a distance of 105 miles. Actions of importance during the battle will be examined as will instances of great bravery. A fascinating story and one never fully examined previously. In the words of Brigadier General Sir James Edmonds, author of the Official History of the War, during the Spring Offensive, ‘the Fifth Army bent, but it never broke.’ The talk will focus on one vital component of Fifth Army at that time. Michael Nugent has written four books on the Great War. The first dealt with the 2nd battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers at the Battle of Festubert, May 1915, and the second on the 36th (Ulster) Division in the German Spring Offensive, March 1918. The third, ‘A Bad Day I Fear’ examines the role of the Irish Divisions at the Battle of Langemarck in August 1917. The fourth, in collaboration with Nigel Henderson, is titled Killester Garden Village. The Lives of Great War Veterans and Their Families. He continues to research service personnel for relatives and other interested parties. **VENUE: Pearse Street Library, Dublin.** **Doors Open At 13.40 For A 14.00 Start.** **Members And Non-Members Of The Western Front Association Are Equally Welcome. Any New Visitors Are Guaranteed A Friendly Atmosphere And A Warm Welcome From A Group Of Like-Minded Enthusiasts.** **While Entry Is Free, We Would Welcome A Donation Of 3 Euro To Help Cover Our Costs.**

reviving gardans, Growing community
reviving gardans, Growing community
**Hands in the Soil: Community Growing, Learning & Craic** This first gathering will be a relaxed mix of **hands-on garden work, shared learning, and good conversation**. It’s about getting together in a real space, doing something practical, and seeing what ideas and connections might grow from there. On the day, we’ll: * Get our **hands dirty** with some light garden work and soil prep * Do some **seed sowing** and talk about what grows well locally * **Make kombucha together** and chat about fermentation, food, and simple home practices * Share knowledge, questions, and experiences around growing food * Enjoy some **fellowship, chats, and a bit of craic** along the way.Alongside the practical side, we’ll also have an open, informal discussion about a bigger idea: * The possibility of **small community “park farms” or gardens** in underused green spaces around Dublin * What that might look like, what’s realistic, and whether others feel drawn to exploring it further There’s no pressure, no expertise required, and no expectation beyond showing up with curiosity and a willingness to pitch in. Whether you’re experienced with gardening or completely new, you’re very welcome. Bring clothes you don’t mind getting muddy, and if you have them, gloves. Everything else will be very low-key. This is just a **first step** — a chance to meet, work, talk, and see if there’s a shared appetite to keep growing something together.

Join us every Sunday and tell a story as a group by playing a beginner-friendly roleplaying game. Every week we have 2-3 different games. All materials provided and rules are explained at the start of each game, you just need to bring your imagination. **This week's facilitators:** * ️ **Silvia** running *The Ultime Hidden Truth of the World* \- a rules\-light\, postapocalyptic hopepunk mashup of *A Quiet Year* and *Fate*. The grid has gone dark. The internet is down. The delivery trucks have stopped arriving. But your little community is thriving. Play through four seasons of building something together at the end of the world… * **Vishnu** building a city in *[I'm Sorry Did You Say Street Magic](https://seaexcursion.itch.io/street-magic)*. Street Magic is about breathing life into a city together — finding the true names of things, the ones that really mean something, like "the cheapest espresso on the block, the barista with the tacky taste in music" or "lantern-lit, soft wind chimes, a million mages chanting." We'll chose a setting and dream up a city in this GM-less, dice-less map making game. * **Scott** with a Grant Howitt one-page RPG, *[Adventure Skeletons](https://gshowitt.itch.io/adventure-skeletons)*. You're a skeleton, bored of guarding the dungeon for some wizard, and you decide that you should go on an adventure instead. You're having a great time at the local village's harvest festival, but people keep hitting you and your bits keep falling off. Try get as much treasure as you can before you have to head home! *** Feel free to ask the organisers any questions you have (here or on our [Discord server](https://tinyurl.com/indie-rpgs-dublin)).

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Google Analytics Alternatives
Data & Analytics Wednesday - Google Analytics Alternatives
**Google Analytics Alternatives** Is it finally time to make the switch away from Google Analytics? Two-and-a-half years ago Jason Packer asked this question at Columbus Web Analytics Wednesday. Since then: Google’s Universal Analytics has been sunset, we’ve changed our name to Columbus Data & Analytics Wednesday, and Jason has released two editions of his book “Google Analytics Alternatives”. Fresh off the release of the 2nd edition of his book, we thought it was time to re-open this conversation. While people love to complain about it, GA’s market share has remained relatively constant (at least in the United States). Why is that? You won’t find any complaints about GA4 in this talk, but rather an overview of what’s currently available in the market and how to frame your decision-making process. We’ll also be giving out some free copies of Jason’s book! So even if you’ve got a “GA4Lyfe” tattoo (no judgement), there’s free books to go with the free pizza and beer.
