Banff Mountain Film Festival at The Astor | Adventure Films Night
Banff Mountain Film Festival at The Astor | Adventure Films Night
Let’s meet up for the Banff Mountain Film Festival 2026 at The Astor Theatre in St Kilda. The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour brings together a selection of short films focused on adventure, mountain culture, outdoor sports, exploration, and remote places. Expect stories involving things like climbing, trail running, mountain biking, skiing, paddling, and other outdoor adventures. We’ll meet outside The Astor Theatre at 6:15pm, then head inside together before the 7:00pm film start. Seating is not allocated, so we’re meeting a bit early to try to secure good seats and hopefully sit together as a group. This is a relaxed, low-pressure social night. You’re welcome to come by yourself, say hello before the film, enjoy the screening, and leave afterwards. If people are interested, we can also grab a quick dinner or food nearby after the screening. **Who this is for** This should suit people who enjoy: * Adventure films and outdoor stories * Hiking, climbing, cycling, skiing, paddling, travel, or mountain culture * A relaxed cinema night with a small social group * Coming solo and meeting a few new people in a low-pressure way You do not need to be an extreme adventurer to join — just some curiosity about the outdoors and adventure films is enough. **Links** * Meetup start point: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/eKr97z7vggirRrxLA](https://maps.app.goo.gl/eKr97z7vggirRrxLA) * Australian website: [https://banffaustralia.com.au/](https://banffaustralia.com.au/) * Ticket website: [https://events.humanitix.com/banff-mountain-film-festival-2026-astor-tues-12-may-7pm](https://events.humanitix.com/banff-mountain-film-festival-2026-astor-tues-12-may-7pm) * YouTube trailer: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqD7DCQllyw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqD7DCQllyw) **Timeline** * 6:15pm — Meet outside The Astor Theatre * 6:20pm–6:30pm — Say hello and head inside together to try to secure good seats * 7:00pm — Banff Mountain Film Festival screening starts * Around 10:00pm — Screening ends / Meetup officially ends * Afterwards — Optional quick dinner or food nearby if people are interested **Tickets / cost** Everyone needs to buy their own ticket in advance. A Meetup RSVP does not include entry to the film. Please only RSVP as “Going” once you are planning to buy or have bought your ticket. **Important ticket notes:** * Seating is not allocated, so we’re meeting at 6:15pm to try to secure good seats. * Tickets may sell out. * The event page says no refunds. * Please check the ticket page for the latest ticket price and availability. * Please make sure you are booking the correct session: The Astor, Tuesday 12 May 2026, 7:00pm. **Bring** * Your event ticket / ticket confirmation * A light jacket, depending on the weather * Money/card if you want food afterwards **Important notes** * Please buy your own ticket in advance. * Seating is not allocated, so please arrive on time if you want to sit with the group. * If your plans change, please update your RSVP to “Not Going” so numbers stay clear. **Optional after-plan** After the screening, we can grab a quick dinner, snack, or drink nearby if people are interested. This is completely optional, and it’s also totally fine to head home straight after the film.

Tricky Tuesday @ The Peacock Inn
Tricky Tuesday @ The Peacock Inn
**PLEASE NOTE AFTER THIS EVENT TRICKY TUESDAY WILL BE ON A TEMPORARY HIATUS. I WILL BE OVERSEAS AND THERE IS NO ONE TO HOST IN MY ABSENCE. THE EVENT WILL RESUME MID-LATE JUNE.** Welcome to the **Tricky Tuesday** Meet Up! This is a smaller event in most respects - smaller capacity, smaller games - but still the same sized fun! Come join us to learn a new game and meet some new people. * This event was created primarily to play and explore **modern** **trick taking games** and **smaller card games** which can be played on more limited table space. * As this is a smaller event, please note it is a bit more casual. Find the group at the table/s, come over and join - we're a welcoming bunch. * Please **bring some games** to this event if you can and be prepared to teach them if you do. **There are** **no games available at the venue** but I will always bring a few. Please consider others when coming and in the lead up to the event. We want as many people there as possible. If you are unable to attend mark yourself as such as soon as you can so others can be notified and attend. There's an FAQ below but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out. Your tricky friend, Dave **FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS** **What is a trick taking game? Good question you handsome person.** * Generally speaking, a trick taking game is a card game which is played in a series of rounds known as ***tricks***. * Each trick is evaluated to determine a winner or ***taker*** of that trick and then will usually start - or ***lead*** *-* the next trick. * The goal is usually tied to either winning or losing a number of tricks. This may also come in the form of you guessing how many tricks you will win - known as a ***bid***. * Some games may have a suit that always wins - known as a ***trump***. * Most trick taking games are **competitive** needing between 3-5 players, others are **cooperative**, there are also solo and two-player trick taking games as well! * Popular trick taking/trick taking adjacent games you may have heard of: [The Crew](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/324856/the-crew-mission-deep-sea), [Skull King](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/150145/skull-king), [Cat in the Box](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/345972/cat-in-the-box-deluxe-edition), [Scout](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/291453/scout), [Fox in the Forest](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/221965/the-fox-in-the-forest), the classic games of [Spades](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/592/spades) and [Hearts](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/6887/hearts), **What makes a Trick Taking game fun?** * There's so much to trick taking games! They're generally quick to teach, quick to play, have interesting decision spaces, and a wide variety of novelty. Even the classics though can be played thousands of times without getting tiresome. Part of the fun is in the interaction with others, assessing their moves and countering them, and how to win (or lose) at the right times. You have to stay on your toes, adapt frequently, and keep tabs on the other players, what they have played, and what they may play next! **Do I need to know how to play/have played a trick taking game before?** * Not at all, but it is good to understand the basics and general terminology so you can pick things up a bit easier on the night. You can check out [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O7QyhKmCsk) for a bit of a general breakdown . **Is this event free?** * Yes, but please support the venue by purchasing a drink or two. **I'm on the waitlist can I still come?** * Unfortunately, no. We have limited capacity and must abide by it. **I don't have a game to bring, is that okay?** * Generally it will be okay, but it is encouraged to bring and share a game where you can! You can always bring a standard deck of cards or tarot cards and learn a card game or two as well! **Can I bring a guest?** * Unfortunately, unless they have signed up too it won't be possible. We have a strict limit on guests and the event would fill up too quickly otherwise. **How do I get to the venue?** * The 86 Tram is your best bet and has a stop pretty much right outside of the venue. * There are two train stations (Westgarth and Northcote) which are within walking distance. * Parking is available in the area but can get busy. If you don't mind a little walk there is parking down the adjacent street. **Dave, I worry you will win all the games we play. Such an intelligent and beautiful man, you must be a master of the tricks, is this true?** * Firstly - thank-you for the kind words, but secondly - no. I suck at trick taking games and lose more than I win. Yet, I enjoy them for their variety, high interaction, and quick nature regardless. You will be fine if you don't take things too seriously. It's about fun and meeting people... (but if you do beat me too often I will ban you from the group and venue...).

A unique afternoon tea - One-hatted Oxi Tea Room
A unique afternoon tea - One-hatted Oxi Tea Room
There have been some requests in the group for an afternoon tea, so here’s a really unique one! Oxi Tea Room was awarded one Hat this year and delivers an incredible afternoon tea experience. Here’s an example video of one of their previous menus: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DIA3AtEh4bf/?igsh=MW5lN3ZmaGxkeHFwag== The new menu titled ‘Hatched - The Loop’ has just been released (menu here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cO4e2-mPF2ZE_C6Pce3FTallVZGlP1nJ/view) and I have booked this for 6 Fine Diners to enjoy from 12pm on Sunday 17 May. The price is $128 per person and includes a tea and a welcome drink. You can purchase additional teas/drinks on the day if you wish.

Join the waitlist to express interest. Once I have names in the waitlist, I’ll send you a ‘Meetup Message’ to confirm you have a spot and how to pay. You’ll need to send me the full cost of $128 to secure your place as this is charged for cancellations. Once paid I’ll move you from the waitlist to going. Please check that you don’t have your settings blocking messages; if I can’t contact you I’ll have to move on to the next person. Also if you don’t respond to my message within 3 days, I’ll let you know that I’m offering the seat to the next person on the waitlist.

Thanks and I’m looking forward to trying this beautiful-looking afternoon tea with you!

Slate Run Metro Park and Living Historical Farm
Slate Run Metro Park and Living Historical Farm
**Let’s hike Slate Run Metro Park (meet at Shady Grove Picnic Area) and then visit the Living Historical Farm. We will aim for 3.5 to 4 miles of hiking and then get in our cars and drive to The Farm. I’m estimating about 45 minutes for The Farm. From there those who are interested can join for lunch at Brewdog, 96 Gender Way, Canal Winchester, just 11 minutes away.** **Living Historical Farm: Time has been turned back to the 1880s at Slate Run Living Historical Farm. Experience first-hand what life was like on a 19th-century Ohio farm. As you stroll through the gardens, barns and farmhouse, you will see the farm’s costumed staff and volunteers going about their daily chores. Pigs, geese, turkeys, Percheron horses and other heirloom animals can be seen.** **The gothic revival farmhouse was built in 1856 and restored by Metro Parks for authenticity. Visitors can tour the living room, parlor and kitchen and watch the farm ladies prepare meals on a woodburning stove and tend the house. The multi-bay barn was built by Samuel Oman, the fourth owner of Slate Run Farm, and restored by Amish carpenters.** **Allow at least three hours and maybe more if you're joining for lunch.** **Pace is 17-18 minute miles with no one left behind.** **This is the fourth of the metro parks.**
