Queer Bookclub #36– „The Song of Achilles‘ by M. Miller
Queer Bookclub #36– „The Song of Achilles‘ by M. Miller
Join us for dinner and discussion about queer books! For our next book, we will be reading **“The Song of Achilles”** by **Madeline Miller**. **Blurb:** Achilles, "the best of all the Greeks," son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus, is strong, swift, and beautiful, irresistible to all who meet him. Patroclus is an awkward young prince, exiled from his homeland after an act of shocking violence. Brought together by chance, they forge an inseparable bond, despite risking the gods' wrath. They are trained by the centaur Chiron in the arts of war and medicine, but when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the cruel Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice. **The Plan** 19:00 Meeting @ the restaurant 19:15 Dinner & discussion 20:45 Choosing a short novel for July 21:00 End **Dinner** The name of the restaurant will be announced in the WhatsApp group chat. **What to do** 1\. Book Discussion: The Last Kings of Shanghai by Kaufman
Book Discussion: The Last Kings of Shanghai by Kaufman
Unlike the usual BYOB format of this group, this is an **assigned reading format.** **You are expected to have read some of the book** to join the discussion :) I am excited to finally read this book, its an award-winning, one of the most highly rated non fiction books across Goodreads/Amazon and for good reason! About the book: # "In vivid detail... examines the little-known history of two extraordinary dynasties."--The Boston Globe An epic, multigenerational story of two rival dynasties who flourished in Shanghai and Hong Kong as twentieth-century China surged into the modern era, from the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Shanghai, 1936. The Cathay Hotel, located on the city's famous waterfront, is one of the most glamorous in the world. Built by Victor Sassoon--billionaire playboy and scion of the Sassoon dynasty--the hotel hosts a who's who of global celebrities: Noel Coward has written a draft of Private Lives in his suite and Charlie Chaplin has entertained his wife-to-be. And a few miles away, Mao and the nascent Communist Party have been plotting revolution. By the 1930s, the Sassoons had been doing business in China for a century, rivaled in wealth and influence by only one other dynasty--the Kadoories. These two Jewish families, both originally from Baghdad, stood astride Chinese business and politics for more than 175 years, profiting from the Opium Wars; surviving Japanese occupation; courting Chiang Kai-shek; and losing nearly everything as the Communists swept into power. In The Last Kings of Shanghai, Jonathan Kaufman tells the remarkable history of how these families participated in an economic boom that opened China to the world, but remained blind to the country's deep inequality and to the political turmoil at their doorsteps. In a story stretching from Baghdad to Hong Kong to Shanghai to London, Kaufman enters the lives and minds of these ambitious men and women to forge a tale of opium smuggling, family rivalry, political intrigue, and survival. Note: * **location subject to change** but we'll keep it around Wan Chai District. * You **must** buy something at the venue. * **First timer attendees** are requested to contribute 20HKD to fund the Meetup Group Subscription. * No-Shows make the host sad (please update your attendance)

Marvel Superheroes at One Shot Saturday (Tabletop RPGs)
Marvel Superheroes at One Shot Saturday (Tabletop RPGs)
**Marvel Superheroes** Hark, True Believers! The call has gone out, for a mighty Marvel mission featuring classic superheroes. All seems well in Central Park, until some rascally lowlifes get their hands on some strange weapons. But where did they get these wonderful toys? Time for a team-up to track down the terrible titans of hi-tech turpitude! It’s all in a day’s work for your friendly neighborhood Marvel heroes! **What Lies in the Salo Mines** The harpies have left your rations torn and your pockets dry. Neo Valos offers you refuge but it comes at the cost of a quest. A beast has invaded the Salo Mines, the town’s main copper source. There are no bodies and no signs of struggle. However, the miners who have returned are all hollowed out. Incoherent speech and faulty memories make up a shell of the person they once were. As olympians, the town has requested you to slay the beast and free them from its terror. What truly resides in the echoing, pitch-black labyrinth of the Salo Mines? **Royal Blood** They are: the Major Arcana, more concept than real. As the queens, gods, and bosses of this city, their power excedes all imagination. You are:the Minor Arcana, as much human as magic. Minor gangsters, nobles and jesters, demigods and monsters alike, your powers are limited to what you can scrape together in a pinch. Still, limitation breeds innovation. Tonight is: the heist of a lifetime, a chance to steal the heart from a god, and in turn, become one as well. Have a care not to lose yourself along the way. WHAT IS ONE-SHOT SATURDAY? It's a weekly meet-up in Sheung Wan/Central, focusing on indie games and single-session games (one-shots). 而家所有游戏係英文嘅但如果你要嚟玩中文游戏,我哋會無任歡迎。只要湊啱玩家就行! You can drop in and play at any One-Shot Saturday – you do not need to have played in a previous session or commit to playing again. Whether you've played an RPG before or not, you're welcome to join us. Please arrive on time as once the games begin it becomes difficult to properly introduce latecomers. Join the conversation, make plans, suggest games to play, etc. — Facebook group: [https://www.facebook.com/groups/oneshotsaturdays/](https://www.facebook.com/groups/oneshotsaturdays/) \*\*\* WHAT IS A TABLETOP RPG? It's a game in which you never know where the next stop will be, because it’s all down to the decisions you and your fellow players make. Usually one person is the Game Master (or "GM"). Everyone else will be players, taking the role of the characters in the game. The players get to say what their characters say, think, and do. The GM describes everything else in the world. Then... we play to find out what happens. The game is a conversation: I say something, then you reply, maybe someone else chimes in. We talk about what's happening to the characters we imagine and the world around them. We also talk about the rules, which help us decide what happens next if the next step is in doubt. The rules differ from game to game: some use dice to shape the story, others use cards or something else. It's always a conversation, though.

Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Greetings writers! Come down and join your fellow wordsmiths for one hour of uninterrupted writing time in the upper level of the Market District Supermarket in Upper Arlington. The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo. Writing is largely a solitary craft. Practicing with others in a community setting may be the thing you need to fire your own routine. We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings, starting the clock at 6:30, following a brief period of introductions. This is solid writing time and all inclusive. Any project is acceptable, be it fiction, non -fiction, work or homework assignment. All is welcome and will remain private to you. The market boasts a Starbucks, a full service bar and various affordable food options. Parking is plentiful, free Wifi is provided as well as outlets for charging your devices, though they are somewhat limited, so plan accordingly. Show up as early as you like, or stay late. This group tends to socialize some, both before and after the alloted time, but this is not mandatory to you. Feel free to come and go as you please and late arrivals are welcome. The cafe may be noisy on occasion so headphones/ earbuds are reccommended as you see fit. Please try to RSVP if possible so that we may grab enough seats for all—the venue can be busy at times. Feel free to message me privately wth any questions and/ or concerns you may have. Happy writing!
