Experiential Field Trip to Quaker Meeting
Details
The UofT is closed for 3 Sundays over the holidays, so we cannot have our normal meetings. So, I'd like to invite any of you that are interested to join me at the Quaker Meeting I belong to (and have recently been going to every other week or so) on Sunday December 22nd. We did this last year and the 5 Oasis folks who came seemed to really appreciate it.
Quakers (at least, the vast majority of Quaker Meetings in Canada) are a very liberal, pacifist faith body, originally Christian, but containing (and fully accepting) a lot of non-theists like myself. The 5 Oasis principles would be largely very comfortable to Canadian Quakers. The Sunday meeting, called "Meeting for Worship", involves sitting in silence for the hour, usually with occasional speaking by those who are led to speak.
You can see an introductory pamphlet on what happens in Meeting at http://newbrunswick.quaker.ca/your-first-time-in-a-quaker-meeting/. Don't be scared off by the "God" language found early in it - while it's possible you might hear such language in someone's speaking on Sunday, that is actually quite infrequent in my recent experience.
The Meeting starts sharp at 11am so please be there a bit early to get settled into the silence.
We'll have coffee there afterwards, then can go out for lunch at a nearby pub.
