Perseids Meteor Shower Field Trip
North Bear Alvar, 357 Alvar Rd, Kawartha Lakes, ON, CAThe Perseids are one of the brighter meteor showers of the year. In 2026, the Perseids will peak on the night between Aug 12–13. Let's watch them together! We will also have a nice telescope for a simultaneous stargazing party.
Best day for viewing astronomically would be Wednesday or Thursday evening. But weather (clouds, smoke, etc) is of course CRITICAL. So we've listed Wednesday evening here, and we'll make a call on TUESDAY based on the forecast for which day we will go - I hope I'll be able to update the event date (if meetup will let me do that), but will at the least update this description and add a comment.
We will meet there. You'll need to arrange your own transport. Please use the comments for ride offers/shares.
Evening Schedule: Depart Toronto 7:30pm or earlier. Stop for bathroom on the way. Arrive 9:30 or earlier. The Moon is completely new, so won't be casting any light and it will be dark. Frequency of meteors about once a minute, so should be quite the show. Watch for an hour or more. Leave around midnight (or later), home very late (maybe 2:30am?).
The location more precisely is the Deverell-Morton Nature Reserve, about 200 meters west from North Bear Alvar (but google maps doesn't have a name/map spot for this reserve) : https://couchichingconserv.ca/what-we-do/properties/deverell-morton-nature-reserve/. There are some proper parking spots: please park by backing up with the headlights away (pointing south) from the stargazing area. It also has some shoulders on the GRAVEL road for parking, and a few big fields where we can sit / laydown to see the show. Most importantly, location is isolated and DARK. And, unlike Torrance Barrens, it's not going to be crowded, and it's closer too!
DO NOT FORGET:
- bug spray
- red or dim flash lights ONLY (do not ruin our night adapted eyes!)
- chairs / blankets
- warmer clothes, it may be chilly and you won't be moving
- water
- go to washroom just before you arrive (no on site facilities, there are Tim Hortons / various fast food places open till 11pm in Orillia and also on the road up from the south)
- watch out for wildlife when you drive from Orillia: LOTS OF HARES jumping on the road!
- the last ~3km of the road is gravel/rocky, drive carefully
- BACK INTO parking spots on the North side: so your headlights point south, away from where we are.NICE TO HAVES:
