Update. 1st night is Alabama hills, most likely an arch. I booked a room at the trails motel
2nd night is Trona. I booked a room at quality inn China lake
This is July 4th weekend.
I feel like I didn’t get many night photos last year so this year I’m going all out! Who’s with me?!
We’ll start with 1 night in Alabama Hills for the Milky Way. It’s a new moon weekend perfect for Milky Way. The sun sets at 8:00 and Milky Way core is visible at 9:36.
We’ll stay the night in Lone Pine. Next morning we’ll have the option of a sunrise shoot (5:44 am for the early birds) and breakfast before heading to Trona Pinnacles for another Milky Way shoot. We can stay overnight in Ridgecrest and drive back to SD or wherever you came from Sunday morning.
Feel free to camp if that’s your thing. I’ll post hotel info later. I’m looking for people to carpool with who don’t mind taking turns driving. I’m also looking for 1-2 people to share a hotel room with.
The roads are unpaved dirt roads and can be sandy in spots but a 4x4 isn’t required. There are very few porta-potties in the area.
We’ll be doing a little bit of walking to get to photo locations so wear proper footwear (closed toe shoes). It will be hot so west cooler clothes.
Bring a tripod and a variety of lenses including a low light wide angle lens (f/1.2-2.8). Don’t forget a chair, snacks, water, headlamp.
Cell service will be sketchy in these areas.
Event may be cancelled last minute if weather is not permitting.
