Senegambia | Motorbike Journey Across Senegal + Gambia

Details

Bustling, colourful Senegal is one of West Africa's most popular destinations, and also one of the region's safest. Located on a tip of peninsula filled with beaches that tap the slow lazy beats. Locals go swimming, play football, live on fishing, go surfing and even deep sea diving in the waters nearby.

Cosmopolitan Dakar is one of cultural and trade hubs here with corniche boulevards, all-night sabar drum parties and nightclubs, kaleidoscopic fabrics and fashion, and delicious Senegalese food are a few of the things you will find in this city situated on the Atlantic Ocean. Being one of the most accessible cities in the region, its airport is served by multiple international carriers.

Our plan is to visit this country on motorbikes to get as close as to the real Africa. Expect river border crossings, sand tracks through the jungle, African nightlife in Dakar and Banjul. We will do bird watching, hiking, explore rivers and mangroves, perhaps also dance and drum classes.

Beaches, salt flats, jungle and plains bursting with mammoth baobab trees will become our this November. Inspired by famous Paris – Dakar, here our version le petit, Dakar – Dakar.

Ever dreamt of riding across Africa? Here is your chance, Let's go!

Day 1 // MAR 30 – arrival, Dakar
Arrival, immigration formalities. Overnight in Fatick

Day 2 // MAR 31 - Biking start!
Shortly after breakfast, we will have an orientation with the scooters. Next to our hotel there is a sand and clay piste that is good for practicing without any traffic. We will head south into the Sine-Saloum delta, through salt flats and palm trees and over the Saloum River. We will stop for some refreshments in the town of Sokone before continuing into a more forested stretch where if we are lucky we will see green monkeys darting across the road. We will arrive at our lodging on the water in the late afternoon with plenty of time to have a a dip in the pool (or the river), a spin on a kayak or even an optional birdwatching or fishing excursion.

Day 3 // APR 01 - Banjul, Gambia
After breakfast, we will hop on the bikes and head south towards the Fathala game reserve. It will be possible to do a lion walk here (optional activity), with the opportunity to take photos in the presence of several tame lions that have been raised on the reserve. We will have lunch at the game reserve and then continue our short ride south to the Gambian border. After border formalities we will ride to our lodging on the beach, not far from the nightlife of the Senegambia strip. We will have a chance to visit an artisanal market and a sacred crocodile pond that has historically been used for fertility rituals.

Day 4 // APR 02
A mercifully late start before we head south along the Gambian coast, through the Tandji fish market and bird reserve. We will have lunch near the village of Gunjur, in an ecolodge that is set in dense forest. After lunch, we will continue towards the Senegalese border. We will cross back into Senegal in the afternoon, but this time we will find ourselves in the Casamance, Senegal's southern province and a world apart.

Day 5 // APR 03 :: Ziguinchor, Casamance
Day 6 // APR 04 :: Cap Skirring
Day 7 // APR 05 :: Casamance + domestic flight or ferry back to Dakar
Day 8 // APR 06 :: Dakar

Most of the roads are in good shape, we will not be moving in rush hour traffic. In fact, most of the time, we will be sharing the road with cows, kids walking home from school and donkey carts. We will have one difficult stretch of sand track after crossing into the Casamance, but we will take it slow, and it’s only a few kilometers.
