Sky High Tehran | Weekend in Tehran, Iran

Details

Welcome to Tehran, a settlement with ancient origins which has evolved into so much more than just Iran’s capital – it’s the country’s political, cultural and creative hub. Set against the backdrop of the snow-dusted Alborz mountains, the city mixes tradition and modernity in the most intoxicating way, with time-worn mosques sitting side by side with art galleries and third-wave coffee shops.

Tehran may have only claimed the title of Iran’s capital in 1795, but its roots run far deeper. For millennia it has watched empires rise and fall – from the medieval Timurids to the 18th century Qajars to the 20th century Pahlavis – and going back even farther, it was once a sleepy village living quietly in the shadow of nearby Rey, an ancient city old enough to have seen the Achaemenids come and go.

Today, this fast-paced metropolis of over 8.5 million people is anything but quiet. It’s buzzing with creativity, tech startups, rooftop cafés…and enough traffic to inspire your own colorful Farsi vocabulary.

The city's population is a vibrant melting pot of Persian, Azeri, Kurdish, and other ethnic groups, giving it a vibe that’s as diverse as the spices in a Persian stew. Fun Fact: Tehran is home to more Azerbaijanis than any other city in the world! And with a median age of around 32, Tehran’s got serious millennial energy, mixing of tradition with a TikTok twist.

Nature lovers, don’t worry – despite being the political and economic epicenter of Iran, with the accompanying skyscrapers and traffic jams, Tehran offers a breath of fresh air (literally) thanks to the stunning Alborz mountain range. Its northern neighborhoods feature lush hillsides, icy streams and snow-covered peaks perfect for hikes or winter skiing. The city’s also dotted with leafy parks perfect for a picnic, and if you're lucky, you'll catch a pink sunset that turns the whole city into a pastel dreamscape.

From bustling bazaars and grand palaces to sleek high-rises and creative urban spaces, in just one weekend Tehran offers the perfect glimpse of Iran’s past and present.

Let’s go!
Day 1 // Friday
We meet at DXB at 3pm for our flight to Tehran. Evening arrival, immigration and hotel check-in. After a quick refresh, it’s time for a modern Tehran classic: Tabiat Bridge. Designed by a 26 year old architect(!) it’s much more than a functional landmark – it’s become a popular gathering place, where Tehranis hang out, walk, talk, take selfies and maybe even fall in love. We’ll grab some dinner nearby for our first taste of the saffron-spiced local cuisine, and views of the city’s twinkling lights.
Day 2 // Saturday
Rise and shine for some fresh air at altitude! First stop: Darband, a mountain trail filled with streams, snack stands and grills serving up meats so tasty they might ruin all other kebabs for you forever. Then we’ll pile into the Tochal cable car, which will lift us from the sounds of the city hustle to snowy silence in minutes. At the summit, you’ll feel like you're standing on the roof of Iran.
Once we’re back down on the city streets, we’ll head to the Milad Tower, Tehran’s futuristic needle in the sky. We’ll have lunch in its rotating restaurant and enjoy a side of 360° views.
In the evening we will visit Farahzad, a magical garden-restaurant that’s one of the city’s oldest spots. Lanterns in the trees, music in the air and kebabs on our plates – what more could we ask for?
Day 3 // Sunday
Time to time-travel! First we’ll visit the National Museum of Iran, where pottery, statues, and ancient scripts bring Persia’s past to life. Then it’s on to the glittering Golestan Palace, blending Persian artistry with European influences in a dazzling complex of tiled halls, mirrored chambers and lush gardens. Once the seat of the Qajar dynasty, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the city’s most striking symbols of royal opulence.

A stroll through the Grand Bazaar wraps up our adventure, with time to shop, snack and soak in the atmosphere one last time… before we head to the airport and say bye-bye to incredible Iran.
