Identifying Church/State Violations & The ACLU
Details
We have spent the last three years fighting against school endorsement of religion in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana with great success. We want to share what we've learned so that as parents and members of the community, you will feel confident in identifying, reporting, and standing up to unconstitutional endorsements of religion from the state.
The ACLU - Bill Sharp an attorney for the ACLU will be our keynote speaker. He will also address other issues the ACLU is working on in Kentucky.
Planned Parenthood - Lauren Blauvelt-Copelin will speak briefly about the new abortion bans in Ohio
We may also have one additional surprise guest.
The following organizations are supporting this event and have sent us materials to hand out to the 1st 50 people who attend:
American Atheists, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, Freedom From Religion Foundation, Secular Coalition for America.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
Parents, children, activists, teachers, and concerned members of the community
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
This is a completely free event
WHAT WILL BE DISCUSSED?
We will review a very quick history of the separation of church and state in public schools, provide detailed information on what is a violation and what is not, discuss violations that we've encountered and our successes, answer questions, and provide additional resources.
“Families entrust public schools with the education of their children, but condition their trust on the understanding that the classroom will not purposely be used to advance religious views that may conflict with the private beliefs of the student and his or her family.” Edwards v. Aguillard, 482 U.S. 578, 584 (1987).
In addition to the discussion, we will be collecting new, unwrapped toys, games, books, etc. Please no realistic looking weapons. Toys will be available for distribution to our members in need and/or any family in need at a member's request. Any remaining toys will be donated to Toys for Tots. If you cannot donate toys, monetary donations will be accepted.
