Phoneline Trail to Big Rock
We will hike the Phoneline trail past the Blackett’s Ridge trailhead, continue past the crossroads (where we will continue on the Phoneline trail rather than going down the switchbacks) until we reach a large rock that we can sit on appropriately called “Big Rock”. We'll start promptly at 6:00 when the temperature will probably be in the high 60’s, hang out for a bit at the rock (bring a snack if you desire), and then head back down the Phoneline Link Trail ("the switchbacks",) take the creek trail past the dam, across the creek, and follow the bluff trail back to the tram road. It should only be around 80 degrees when we finish. STATS: Difficulty: Intermediate Estimated distance: ~5 miles Estimated elevation gain: 600 feet Estimated total time: 3 hrs including stopping at Big Rock for a short break *** Please think of your RSVP as a commitment to going. Please be aware that hiking can result in serious injury or death: know your limits, your comfort level, and the adequacy of your equipment (i.e. shoes, clothing, and accessories) before signing up. You are hiking at your own risk. *** WHAT TO BRING: - Minimum of two liters or water, and possibly a snack - Poles can be helpful IMPORTANT: Please make sure that you can be at the trailhead by the starting time. I will wait at the intersections to keep the group pointed in the right direction, but please consider your physical conditioning before signing up for this hike. If your plans do change, please make sure you update your RSVP ASAP.

What we're about

Our group features hikes of variable length & ability. Beginner hikes range from 2 to 4 miles, while advanced hikes may be up to 16 miles and may feature bush-wacking & rock scrambling. Beginner and moderate hikes usually are a mixed group between athletic pace and slow or moderate pace. Having fun talking, taking pictures, and admiring the beautiful Sonoran desert is all part of the package deal.

Many factors determine the difficulty of a hike: mileage, terrain, elevation and pace. The hike rating scale that we have adopted is:

A - Extreme: no limit for distance or elevation
B - Advanced: maximum 16 miles or 3000' gain
C - Intermediate: maximum 8 miles or 1500' gain
D - Beginner: maximum 4 miles or 500' gain
