Sunday Pursuit

Pursuits are a fun way of sailboat racing where the Slower boats start first, and the fast boats start later and must catch the fleet.
The staggered start means that the first boat that crosses the finish line after completing the course wins.

1. Start and Finish line: The start/Finish line is a transit line drawn from Fiddle and Todd Rocks to the shore. You start North of Todd rock and on the opposite side of the transit line from where the course is set.
   2. Finish by sailing the course and crossing the transit line north of Todd Rock.
   3. Start times are posted by PHRF rating. If you don’t have a rating, ask someone at your club what yours should be. Check the internet or just make an educated
   guess that seems suitable. If you find you are not managing to stay close to the fleet at the end of the race, start sooner. If you don’t have a downwind sail You
   will need to start sooner than your rating would suggest. The goal is to be close to the finish line as the fleet crosses and have some fun.

6. The Course will be selected and announced the day prior to the race on Turkey head's meetup site.
7. Starts and Finishes are self-monitored.
8. You can also post your finish time and any comments on the event posting on Turkey head meetup site for fun.
9. We may adopt a different course depending on the conditions.

The Gory Details:
10. Participation as crew or Skipper is at your own risk.
11. Boats must meet Canadian Coast Guard safety
requirements and have minimum $1M in liability insurance
12. Racing Rules of Sailing apply as amended below
13. Starts based on GPS times above
14. Postponements if required will be applied in increments of 5 minutes
15. No engine propulsion in 4 minutes prior your start
16. Cardinal buoys (e.g. Mouat Reef, Fulford Reef) and all navigational aids must be
obeyed
17. Boats take own finish time and post in event comments, (look in past events)
18. Radio communication on VHF channel 9
19. There will be no, skippers meeting there will be a coffee 9:45 to 10:15 Oak Bay
coffee shop or in the bar at RVYC as well.
20. Stay safe and play nice.

We meet inside or on the patio of the Marina coffee shop at 9:45 for half an hour before leaving for sailing. There is a DRAW PRIZE each month for any attendee who signed up before 6:00pm on the previous day .

Crew members looking for a skipper, please indicate this in the Comments section when you sign up. Thus far we have been able to find crew opportunities for all our events.

Length of events will depend on conditions and might run a little longer than indicated.

Cruise direction and duration will be determined by Skippers. Channel 9 for contact.

NOTES FOR POTENTIAL NEW CREW MEMBERS

1. You are always welcome to join us for coffee/social events to get to know the Bunch.
2. Ensuring you have a complete profile, with details about your sailing experience, is the best way for a skipper to identify whether you'd be a fit for their boat. Some may be willing to take out inexperienced sailors, while others will be looking for at least a basic level of knowledge and experience.

WHAT TO BRING

1. A life jacket. Some skippers have a spare to lend
2. Bring a snack and beverage if you are going to be out for a while (skippers also welcome the occasional token of thanks!)
3. It is always cooler on the water. Dress in layers that can be be adapted to the conditions. Wear flat shoes with non-slip non-marking soles and bring a pair of sailing gloves (climbing gloves with leather palms and fingers are also suitable).

SAFETY

There are risks of injury and death involved in sailing. You are responsible for your own safety and must assess the situation for yourself. (This includes an assessment of the skipper, the crew, the boat and the conditions. The more challenging the conditions the more confident you want to be about who you are going with.)

The skipper is always responsible for the safety of their vessel and crew, and has the final decision on who may sail aboard their vessel.
