The Conscious Bat: 50 years later
Details
We are hosting a series of discussions focused on the philosophy of AI. Our motivating questions are whether today's LLMs have knowledge, whether they are conscious, whether they have agency, and finally whether they can be moral.
This week we prepare for a discussion of consciousness in AI by first reading the latest in philosophy of consciousness from the philosopher who pioneered the present understanding. For this we'll read
Nagel (1974) What Is It Like to Be a Bat?
Nagel (2024) The Psychophysical Nexus

For those of you who remember the old philosophy meetup, we have returned to the old format, but with better food.
