Speaker #1 - Sam Ashcroft (UK AI Ethics Founder)
I will introduce the Meetup, give an introduction to the topic of AI Ethics & Governance in Society, and hear from you.

Speaker #2 - Barani Maung - Online Safety Policy Lead
When OpenAI's ChatGPT entered the mainstream, it catalysed conversations around the threats of GenAI. Regulation, diversity, the reduction of biases - these have all been thrown around as mitigation strategies.

But barely anyone has asked: regulation for whom? What does that diversity look like? And what are the biases we are actually trying to reduce?
Barani has devoted her time to answering these questions for the Global Majority (countries outside of the North-West), who will be disproportionately affected by systems built under Western assumptions and perspectives.
Her motivation stems from three factors. Her industry experience working on product safety at Meta, where she learnt how systems built within Western cultural contexts become hazardous in Non-Western environments. Her research at the Oxford Internet Institute (https://tinyurl.com/BaraniMM), where she explored how GenAI will disproportionately affect the Global Majority, especially regions that are at risk of, or are already facing, a crisis. And her lived experience as a trust and safety professional from Myanmar, a country that has deeply felt the consequences of insular technology governance. Now her mission is to ensure that similar countries don't share the same fate.

\Note that this meetup is only for those in the UK, or moving here to work on AI Ethics/Governance in the next 6 months. If you want support building a grassroots community of AI Ethicists in your own region, please contact Sam directly and he'll support.\
