Sunday Scramble: Red Rock Guardian Angel Pass

Join us on this strenuous but REWARDING scenic hike at Calico in Red Rock. A great intro to Red Rock and also to scrambling, as we will work our way around and through this area with hiking, as well as class 2 and 3 scrambling.

Guardian Angel Pass is a short but exceptionally challenging adventure that dives directly into the rugged, isolated heart of the Calico Hills. This route is not a casual trail but a demanding, non-maintained passage requiring hands-on scrambling across the iconic red and buff Aztec Sandstone. The path is a relentless, steep gully that demands sure footing and careful navigation, as cairns are often scarce and the loose footing is notoriously tricky.

Several trails are included in this grand adventure that goes through Guardian Pass, including the Conservation Trail, Guardian Angel Trail, and the Calico Hills Trail. This route is not for the faint of heart, as several sections require scrambling over large boulders.

WHAT TO EXPECT
A challenging but highly rewarding 3.3 mile hike/scramble that circles Calico 1. Some areas require class 2 and 3 scrambling - this means you will need to use your hands to pull yourself up and lower yourself down.

However, we will take a relaxed pace with frequent breaks to rest or take photos :)

WHERE TO MEET
Directly at the Red Spring Picnic area in Calico Basin. This is outside of the Red Rock Scenic loop, so no passes or reservations are required. The parking lot is paved and spacious, so no carpooling is necessary.

WHAT TO BRING
• Dress appropriately for the weather (it may start cold but you will warm up quickly)
• 2–3 liters of water
• Light snacks
• Proper hiking shoes - good rubber for scrambling on rock
