Hike: Yellow Fork Canyon

Details

This Oquirrh Mountain adventure is a fun change-of-pace to Wasatch Front trails. Starting from the end of the pavement up Rose Canyon Road, we’ll hike a 6.5-mile clockwise loop sandwiched between Camp Williams and Rio Tinto. We’ll trek through groves of overhanging trees, mosey adjacent to flowing streams, and scamper through wild turkey habitat. We’ll try to catch the foliage switching over from summer greens to autumn orange, yellows and reds. One section passes through a concentration of cacti. Along the way we’ll enjoy unique vistas of the Salt Lake Valley, the Wasatch Front, and the Oquirrh Mountains. We’ll gain approximately 1600 feet before looping back to the trailhead. This event stitches together a dozen different trails so plan on regrouping periodically to keep everyone on course. Our itinerary is to stop for brunch/lunch and to socialize about 2/3’s of the way at a picnic table – so bring a snack for this chatty interlude. Meet Elliott at the top of Rose Canyon at the Yellow Fork Canyon trailhead in Herriman at 9:00AM. In the past this has been a 3.5 to 4-hour event. No Dogs.

Trailhead Directions: In Salt Lake County drive 13400 South west to 6400 West and turn south. This is Rose Canyon Road. Drive south on Rose Canyon Road one-half mile to the first stop sign and turn right. Follow this road 3.5 miles to the end of the paved road at Yellow Fork Park trailhead. This is a Salt Lake County equestrian park. We will rally in the small parking lot at the end of the paved road. Park in the equestrian area if the small parking lot is filled. There are restrooms at the trailhead.
