Shoshone Tree Planting
Details
This event assists planting efforts of the Northwest Band of the Shoshone Nation at the Wuda Ogwa Restoration Site (Bear River Massacre Site) near Preston, Idaho. The tribe is seeking volunteers to help plant native trees and seedlings to restore the land to the way it once was along the Bear River. At this sacred site – where upwards of 450 men, women and children were killed in their winter encampment by US soldiers dispatched from Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City on January 29, 1863 – willows, cottonwoods and other native plants will be planted. Scheduled between 10am and 2pm, the tribe recommends “volunteers bring a water bottle, work gloves/boots, and a shovel, and that a light lunch will be provided.” (I have extra shovels for anyone who needs one; let me know.) Our plan is to carpool/caravan to the restoration site and lend a helping hand. Everyone is free to come and go as their schedules permit. Meet Elliott at the Pepperidge Farms Thrift Store north of Richmond on US-91 at 9:30am. Dress for the weather.
Trailhead Information: Drive to Logan and then north on US-91 past Smithfield and Richmond. Meet at the Pepperidge Farms Thrift Store located on US-91 a short distance north of Richmond, Utah, on the west side of road at 9:30am. From this location we will carpool/caravan to the tree planting site – about 20-minutes away.
